Book Wade Fishing the Rappahannock River of Virginia

Download or read book Wade Fishing the Rappahannock River of Virginia written by Steve Moore and published by . This book was released on 2015-01-23 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To catch fish, you need to know where to fish 2015 edition updates regulations and deletes access points no longer usable. The Rappahannock River is home to some of the biggest, meanest smallmouth bass in Virginia. These cantankerous beasts cruise silently in the quiet pools and fast runs below old trench lines marking the remains of violent Civil War battles or in remote, oddly named places like Snake Castle Rock. Steve Moore shares his years of experience fishing this premier river to guide you to the best water between the fall line in Fredericksburg and Chester Gap high in the Blue Ridge. Using over a hundred pictures and 19 maps to round out the descriptions, the book covers 18 access points that open up over 30 miles of water to wade fishing. Even though the book is oriented at anglers who fish on their feet, kayakers and canoeists will find it equally useful to identify the productive water to target as they float downriver. Given we are in the internet age, Steve includes 267 coordinates usable for customized directions via the Internet or loadable into a GPS receiver to guide your day on the water. Any discussion of the Rappahannock must mention the superb fishing available during the spring shad run. Steve dedicates a chapter to where to go and how to catch the fish called the "poor man's tarpon."

Book Wade Fishing the Rapidan River of Virginia

Download or read book Wade Fishing the Rapidan River of Virginia written by Steve Moore and published by . This book was released on 2015-01-25 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To catch fish, you need to know where to fish. 2015 edition updates regulations and deletes access points no longer usable. The Rapidan River is an angler's dream fishable year round since the watershed includes tough, cranky smallmouth bass as well as aggressive mountain brook trout. Following the precedent set in his other CatchGuide books, Steve starts the coverage at the mouth of the Rapidan where it slams into the Rappahannock at the smallmouth bass fishing heaven known simply as "the Confluence" and ends above the old presidential retreat at Camp Hoover high in the Blue Ridge Mountains. There are 11 reliable access points between those two locations opening up over 20 miles of water. Even though the book runs over 31,700 words that is not enough to describe the fabulous fishing on this premier river. 155 pictures, coupled with 13 maps, tell the rest of the story. Use them to put your experienced angler's eye on the water and make your own judgment before you drive to any particular location. In the Internet age, pictures and words are not enough. The book includes 68 GPS coordinates to obtain customized directions via the Internet or put the coordinates directly into a GPS to guide your day on the water. Beyond wade fishing, Steve discusses each access point in terms of its compatibility to launch a canoe or a kayak. Once in the water, floating anglers will be well served to use this guide to move quickly to the good spots and not waste time floating over unproductive water. The detailed coverage from Elys Ford to the Confluence is exceptionally focused and useful.

  • Pages : 52 pages

Download or read book Virginia Trout Fishing written by Steve Moore and published by . This book was released on 2021-04-12 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Among all the options for trout fishing in Virginia, the Rapidan River stands out as a prime fishing location. The Rapidan is one of the most famous rivers on the East Coast as a result of the carefully managed trout fishery in the Shenandoah National Park and the neighboring Rapidan Wildlife Management Area. Head to the mountains to hike and fish for miles from any of the access points discussed in this book. It's all catch and release, single hook and, thankfully, most people abide by that regulation; ensuring a vibrant population of fish in every pool. The book starts at the easy access point at Graves Mill and ends at the Presidential retreat high in the mountains at Camp Hoover. It includes the small, tight, and scenic Staunton River that joins the Rapidan about a mile north of the Graves Mill parking lot. Enjoy! This book is an EXTRACT from the Wade Fishing the Rapidan River book that covered both bass and trout fishing. As a result of private property issues with the lower Rapidan, that book is off the market for now.

  • Author : John McPhee
  • Publisher : Farrar, Straus and Giroux
  • Release : 2003-09-10
  • ISBN : 0374706344

Download or read book The Founding Fish written by John McPhee and published by Farrar, Straus and Giroux. This book was released on 2003-09-10 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John McPhee's twenty-sixth book is a braid of personal history, natural history, and American history, in descending order of volume. Each spring, American shad-Alosa sapidissima-leave the ocean in hundreds of thousands and run heroic distances upriver to spawn. McPhee--a shad fisherman himself--recounts the shad's cameo role in the lives of George Washington and Henry David Thoreau. He fishes with and visits the laboratories of famous ichthyologists; he takes instruction in the making of shad darts from a master of the art; and he cooks shad in a variety of ways, delectably explained at the end of the book. Mostly, though, he goes fishing for shad in various North American rivers, and he "fishes the same way he writes books, avidly and intensely. He wants to know everything about the fish he's after--its history, its habits, its place in the cosmos" (Bill Pride, The Denver Post). His adventures in pursuit of shad occasion the kind of writing--expert and ardent--at which he has no equal.

Book Where the Cherry Tree Grew

Download or read book Where the Cherry Tree Grew written by Philip Levy and published by Macmillan. This book was released on 2013-02-12 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Noted historian pens biography of Ferry Farm—George Washington's boyhood home—and its three centuries of American history In 2002, Philip Levy arrived on the banks of Rappahannock River in Virginia to begin an archeological excavation of Ferry Farm, the eight hundred acre plot of land that George Washington called home from age six until early adulthood. Six years later, Levy and his team announced their remarkable findings to the world: They had found more than Washington family objects like wig curlers, wine bottles and a tea set. They found objects that told deeper stories about family life: a pipe with Masonic markings, a carefully placed set of oyster shells suggesting that someone in the household was practicing folk magic. More importantly, they had identified Washington's home itself—a modest structure in line with lower gentry taste that was neither as grand as some had believed nor as rustic as nineteenth century art depicted it. Levy now tells the farm's story in Where the Cherry Tree Grew. The land, a farmstead before Washington lived there, gave him an education in the fragility of life as death came to Ferry Farm repeatedly. Levy then chronicles the farm's role as a Civil War battleground, the heated later battles over its preservation and, finally, an unsuccessful attempt by Wal-Mart to transform the last vestiges Ferry Farm into a vast shopping plaza.

Book A Fly Fishing Newbie

Download or read book A Fly Fishing Newbie written by David Cartier and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2007-03 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One day in 2006, I thought that if I were ever going to write about my learning experience with fly-fishing, it should be now while I am making the transition from "Newbie" to "Somewhat Proficient." I have come from knowing absolutely nothing about the sport to being reasonably good at it. At least I can catch fish consistently and, more importantly, most of the time I know why I am catching them. If you don't know anything about fly-fishing, this is the book for you because that was exactly my situation a few years ago. The book will help anyone to catch fish using a flyrod without any prior knowledge.
