Book W Boson Mass Measurement at CDF

Download or read book W Boson Mass Measurement at CDF written by and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 10 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the closeout report for the grant for experimental research at the energy frontier in high energy physics. The report describes the precise measurement of the W boson mass at the CDF experiment at Fermilab, with an uncertainty of ≈ 12 MeV, using the full dataset of ≈ 9 fb-1 collected by the experiment up to the shutdown of the Tevatron in 2011. In this analysis, the statistical and most of the experimental systematic uncertainties have been reduced by a factor of two compared to the previous measurement with 2.2 fb-1 of CDF data. This research has been the culmination of the PI's track record of producing world-leading measurements of the W boson mass from the Tevatron. The PI performed the first and only measurement to date of the W boson mass using high-rapidity leptons using the D0 endcap calorimeters in Run 1. He has led this measurement in Run 2 at CDF, publishing two world-leading measurements in 2007 and 2012 with total uncertainties of 48 MeV and 19 MeV respectively. The analysis of the final dataset is currently under internal review in CDF. Upon approval of the internal review, the result will be available for public release.

Book Combination of CDF and D0 Results on the W Boson Mass and Width

Download or read book Combination of CDF and D0 Results on the W Boson Mass and Width written by and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 11 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The results on the direct measurements of the W-boson mass and width, based on the data collected by the Tevatron experiments CDF and D− at Fermilab are summarized and combined. The CDF Run-0 (1988-1889) and Run-I (1992-1995) results have been re-averaged using the BLUE method and combined with Run-I D− results and the latest published results from CDF taken from the first period of Run-II (2001-2004). The results are corrected to have consistency between the parton distribution functions and electroweak parameters. The resulting Tevatron averages for the mass and total decay width of the W boson are: M{sub W} = 80432 ± 39 MeV and [Lambda]{sub W} = 2056 ± 62 MeV. The inclusion of a preliminary Run-II measurement of [Lambda]{sub W} from D−0 gives [Lambda]{sub W} = 2050 ± 58 MeV.

Book excerpt: New measurements of the W boson mass from the two Tevatron experiments, CDF and D0 are presented. The results are from the 1994-1995 Tevatron run, and based on integrated luminosities of 82 pb-1 (D0) and 90 pub-1 (CDF), from p{anti p} collisions at (square root)s=1.8 TeV. These new measurements when combined with previous published measurements yield a Tevatron W mass value of 80.450 " 0.063 GeV.

Book Direct and Indirect Measurements of the W Boson Mass at Fermilab

Download or read book Direct and Indirect Measurements of the W Boson Mass at Fermilab written by and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Presented are the direct measurements of the W boson mass from the CDF and D0 experiments at the Fermilab p[bar p] collider using data from the 1994--1995 run. The W from the D0 experiment is 80.44[+-] 0.12 GeV and the preliminary mass from CDF is 80.43[+-] 0.16 GeV. Combining these mass values with the previous Tevatron measurements leads to a M[sub W] 80.41[+-] 0.09 GeV. Also, presented is the new measurement of sin[sup 2][Theta][sub W][sup on-shell]= 0.2199[+-] 0.0020(stat)[+-] 0.0009(syst) from the deep inelastic neutrino scattering experiment (NuTeV) at Fermilab. In the context of the Standard Model this can be interpreted as a M[sub W]= 80.53[+-] 0.11 GeV.

Book W Mass and Width Measurements at the Tevatron

Download or read book W Mass and Width Measurements at the Tevatron written by and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 4 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I present a measurement of the W boson mass (M{sub W}) and width ([Gamma]{sub W}) using 200 and 350 pb−1 of CDF Run II data respectively. The measurements, performed in both the electron and muon decay channels, rely on a fit to the W transverse mass distribution. We measure M{sub W} = 80413 ± 48 MeV and [Gamma]W = 2032 ± 71 MeV which represent the world's single most precise measurements to date.

Book 2012 Update of the Combination of CDF and D0 Results for the Mass of the W Boson

Download or read book 2012 Update of the Combination of CDF and D0 Results for the Mass of the W Boson written by and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 11 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We summarize and combine the results on the direct measurements of the mass of the W boson in data collected by the Tevatron experiments CDF and D0 at Fermilab. Earlier results from CDF Run-0 (1988-1989), D0 and CDF Run-I (1992-1995) and D0 results from 1 fb−1 (2002-2006) of Run-II data are now combined with two new, high statistics Run-II measurements: a CDF measurement in both electron and muon channels using 2.2 fb−1 of integrated luminosity collected between 2002 and 2007, and a D0 measurement in the electron channel using 4.3 fb−1 collected between 2006 and 2009. As in previous combinations, the results are corrected for inconsistencies in parton distribution functions and assumptions about electroweak parameters used in the different analyses. The resulting Tevatron average for the mass of the W boson is M{sub W} = 80,387 ± 16 MeV and a new world average including data from LEP II is M{sub W} = 80,385 ± 15 MeV.

Book Measurement of the W and Top Mass at the Tevatron

Download or read book Measurement of the W and Top Mass at the Tevatron written by and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The measurements of the mass of the W boson (M{sub W}) and of the top quark (M{sub t}) are important for three reasons: (i) these masses represent fundamental parameters of the Standard Model; (ii) they determine the coupling between the top quark and the Higgs boson, the coupling being proportional to M{sub t}2/M{sub W}2; and (iii) radiative corrections relate the masses of the W, top quark and the Higgs boson: an accurate measurement of M{sub W} and M{sub t} would provide a constraint on the Higgs mass (M{sub H}). We present here the measurements obtained by the CDF and D0 collaborations corresponding to the so-called Run I of data-taking (1992-95, (almost equal to) 100 pb−1 each) at the Tevatron (p{bar p} collisions, (square root)s = 1.8 TeV). In addition we report on the improvements expected for these measurements in the current run (so-called Run IIa) which, having just started (March 2001), is expected to collect about 2 fb−1 by the year 2004.

Book W Mass Measurement with Muons at SQRT S

Download or read book W Mass Measurement with Muons at SQRT S written by Philip Schlabach and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The mass of the W vector boson has been measured from an analysis of $W to mu nu$ decays in the CDF detector at the Fermilab Tevatron $bar p p$ collider. The mass is 79.90 $pm$ 0.53(stat.) $pm$ 0.31(sys.) $pm$ 0.16(scale) GeV/c$sp2$. When this result is combined with previous CDF measurements, sin$sp2thetasb{W}$ is determined to be 0.231 $pm$ 0.008. These measurements place an upper bound on the mass of the unfound top quark.

Book W Mass from the Tevatron

Book excerpt: We report the preliminary W mass measurement at the Tevatron by the D0 collaboration using central electrons from the 1992-1995 data set: M{sub W}=80.37"0.15 GeV/c2. This value is combined with the previously reported measurement of M{sub W} by the CDF collaboration from their 1992-1993 data set of central electrons and muons, to obtain a new world average: M{sub W}=80.35"0.13 GeV/c2. We discuss the measurement procedure and its systematical uncertainties and indicate prospects for the full 1992- 1995 result from the Tevatron. 16 refs., 3 figs., 1 tab.
