Building upon the Bioecological Theory of Human Development, this volume emphasizes the innovative knowledge about psychosocial development of vulnerable children and youth produced in Brazil and aims to present theoretical and methodological approaches developed especially for the countries of the Global South, in an attempt to overcome the scientific divide between the North and South. Northern research agenda defines as global the theories, methodologies, and application of knowledge on social policies and interventions. However, the contexts, histories, and cultural processes are essential for producing and applying research knowledge according to specific regional characteristics, organizations, and conditions. Human development is related to contextual features and cannot be directly imported from one place to another. Departing from these original theoretical and methodological approaches, the book also presents the results of evidence-based interventions, showing its effectiveness in specific contexts. All of this makes Vulnerable Children and Youth in Brazil – Innovative Approaches from the Psychology of Social Development a valuable tool for psychologists, educators, social scientists and public health professionals studying or working with children and youth at risk in different parts of the world, contributing to the understanding of human development in cultural context.

Specifically, the book focuses on the relationship between poverty, ethnicity, gender, and educational exclusion in four Northeast states in Brazil: Maranhao, Paraiba, Pernambuco, and Rio Grande do Norte; and in the Southeast state of Rio de Janeiro. Brazil has vigorously sought to expand the coverage and quality of education, and has achieved rapid results over the past decade. Progress has been achieved on important indicators, and the quality of education is now undoubtedly better than it was in the past. But social background, either as insufficient family income or low parental schooling, persists as a determinant of children's lagging educational achievement. Rural, indigenous, and Quilombola (descendants of fugitive slaves) students have precarious access to education, with schools often not offering the last four years of the mandatory eight in the fundamental cycle. Dropout and repetition rates remain key areas of concern for policymakers. Thus this book includes what youth think about themselves, their schools, their families, and the vulnerability provoked by their gender, their ethnic background, and sometimes the depth of their poverty. This book demonstrates the efforts that Brazil should engage in to reach a pattern of development that is inclusive for all.

Book excerpt: Play, in its various manifestations, has become a bedrock of child and youth centered development NGOs. Organizations have utilized activities like sport, theatre, music, and art as vehicles for pursuing specific development agendas in the Global South. Their goals are varied and often address large scale social issues such as sexual and gender-based violence, hygiene, food security and sustainability, and peacebuilding. My research is based on the belief that play is a valuable pursuit in and of itself. My thesis aims to provide a conceptual framework for assessing how vulnerable children and youth experience play-centered programs as they navigate adversity and risky environments. This thesis is informed by the theoretical work of Deleuze and Guattari and specifically their concepts of micropolitics and becoming. I argue that this perspective offers a more embedded understanding of how players experience play-centered programs and the effects they have on their day to day lives.
