Book Vulnerable Atherosclerotic Plaque

Download or read book Vulnerable Atherosclerotic Plaque written by U. S. Department of Health and Human Services and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2013-04-19 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Atherosclerosis is a chronic condition with acute cardiovascular manifestations. Most commonly, the acute manifestations of atherosclerosis are triggered by a local arterial occlusion with a thrombus overlying a pre-existing atherosclerotic plaque. Despite landmark advances in the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular disease, it remains the leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide, accounting in 2005 for 35% of all deaths in the United States and 30% of all deaths globally. A particular challenge to combating the epidemic of cardiovascular disease is the sudden and often unpredictable nature of its acute manifestations. For many patients with atherosclerosis, the first manifestation is an acute myocardial infarction, sudden cardiac death, or a disabling stroke. This has fueled considerable research aimed at refining existing algorithms for risk stratification and developing new methods to identify subjects before the occurrence of a cardiovascular event so that primary preventive measures can be initiated. Furthermore, among patients who have survived a cardiovascular event, the risk of a subsequent event remains relatively high—approaching 1 in 4 despite aggressive treatment. Such recurrence rates highlight the need for novel approaches to secondary prevention of cardiovascular disease and to the treatment of index events. Over the past two decades, the concept of the “vulnerable plaque” has gained attention as a paradigm to improve risk stratification and potentially lead to newer invasive and non-invasive therapeutic options to prevent and treat atherothrombotic cardiovascular disease. The Effective Health Care Program at the Agency for Healthcare Research & Quality requested a technical brief on the diagnosis and treatment of “vulnerable plaques” of coronary and carotid arteries. Our report is based on a set of key questions designed to explore the concept of “vulnerable plaque” and how this concept could affect the use of existing or developing diagnostic and therapeutic technologies. This report also expands on a technical report on vulnerable plaque that we conducted in 2004. The objective of this report is to assess, with a systematic review approach, the volume and type of evidence available on vulnerable plaque. The purpose is to provide a basis for establishing how the research field is evolving and identify topics that may require further research. We created an “evidence map” that describes the tests that have been evaluated, the populations in which they have been evaluated, and the types of studies that have been used. This review is not a detailed technology assessment based on a systematic review of full-text articles. It does not synthesize or evaluate the results of individual clinical studies and does not make clinical recommendations. “Vulnerable plaque” is still an evolving concept and is not an established medical diagnosis. Therefore, any reference to “vulnerable plaque” in this report concerning its natural history, diagnostic methods, and treatments is by necessity inferential. It refers to conditions that might fall under the current concept of vulnerable plaque but not specifically about vulnerable plaque.

Book Biomechanics of Coronary Atherosclerotic Plaque

Download or read book Biomechanics of Coronary Atherosclerotic Plaque written by and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2020-03-15 with total page 688 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biomechanics of Coronary Atherosclerotic Plaque: From Model to Patient, First Edition, is the first comprehensive text to focus on important biomechanical studies conducted in the last decade that have increased our understanding of coronary atherosclerotic plaque initiation, growth, and rupture, as well as improving the design of medical devices and clinical interventions, including surgical procedures. The book provides students, researchers, engineers, clinicians, and interventional cardiologists with an overview of the main topics related to the biomechanics of atherosclerosis, in a single volume written by several experts in the field. This volume is part of the Biomechanics of Living Organs book series. The biomechanics of human soft tissues and organs has been an emerging research field since the publication of Y.C. Fung’s original book series in the 1990s. The publication of such books entirely dedicated to a specific biomechanical subject is necessary to advance scientific research in the field of biomechanics and to transfer important knowledge to future generations. Therefore, this series of volumes on the biomechanics of living organs has been created. This series began in July 2017 with the publication of a first volume on the fundamentals of Hyperelastic Constitutive Laws for Finite Element Modeling of Living Organs. The current volume on the Biomechanics of Coronary Atherosclerotic Plaque, is the latest in this new series. Presents the main computational fluid dynamic studies performed, describing blood flow in healthy and pathological artery branches, including in coronary bifurcations Highlights the correlation between plaque initiation regions and blood shear stress amplitude Discusses the main biomechanical and mechanobiological models to highlight the importance of quantifying the residual and peak cap stresses and the presence of μ-calcifications to evaluate the risk of plaque rupture Introduces the most recent intravascular imaging biomarker techniques (elastography, palpography and modulography)

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite recent advances in the diagnosis and treatment of symptomatic atherosclerosis, available traditional screening methods for early detection and treatment of asymptomatic coronary artery disease are grossly insufficient and fail to identify the majority of victims prior to the onset of a life-threatening event. In Asymptomatic Atherosclerosis: Pathophysiology, Detection and Treatment, Dr. Morteza Naghavi and leading authorities from the Society for Heart Attack Prevention and Eradication (SHAPE) present a new paradigm for the screening and primary prevention of asymptomatic atherosclerosis. The text focuses on accurate, yet underutilized, measures of subclinical atherosclerosis, notably coronary artery calcium scanning and carotid intima-media thickness measurement. The authors introduce a comprehensive approach to identifying the vulnerable patients (asymptomatic individuals at risk of a near future adverse event). Additional chapters discuss future directions towards containing the epidemic of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease using innovative solutions such as preemptive interventional therapies (bioabsorbable stents) for stabilization of vulnerable atherosclerotic plaques, mass unconditional Polypill therapy for population-based risk reduction, and ultimately vaccination strategies to prevent the development of atherosclerosis. Up-to-date and authoritative, Asymptomatic Atherosclerosis: Pathophysiology, Detection, and Treatment is a must-have for any cardiologist or primary care physician who wishes to practice modern preventive cardiology and manage the increasing number of asymptomatic atherosclerotic patients. Outlines more accurate measures of risk (coronary artery calcium and carotid intima-media thickness) than traditional risk factors (total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, HDL cholesterol) Presents new multipronged strategies to aid in the early detection and treatment of high risk asymptomatic patients

Angioscopy is a unique medical technique for visualizing the interior of blood vessels and helps physicians not only to diagnose the pathology but also to measure the effectiveness of Percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) or antiarteriosclerotic drugs. Furthermore, the recently developed molecular angioscopy approach allows us to observe Low-density lipoprotein (LDL) oxide, collagen, and macrophages, and is rapidly growing in importance.

Book Stroke Genetics

    Book Details:
  • Author : Hugh S. Markus
  • Publisher : Oxford Medical Publications
  • Release : 2003
  • ISBN : 0198515863
  • Pages : 362 pages

Download or read book Stroke Genetics written by Hugh S. Markus and published by Oxford Medical Publications. This book was released on 2003 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stroke is a major cause of death and the major cause of adult neurological disability in most of the world. Despite its importance on a population basis, research into the genetics of stroke has lagged behind that of many other disorders. However, the situation is now changing. Anincreasing number of single gene disorders causing stroke are being described, and there is growing evidence that polygenic factors are important in the risk of apparently "sporadic" stroke.Stroke Genetics provides an up-to-date review of the area, suitable for clinicians treating stroke patients, and both clinical and non-clinical researchers in the field of cerebrovascular disease. The full range of monogenic stroke disorders causing cerebrovascular disease, including ischaemicstroke, intracerebral haemorrhage, aneurysms and arteriovenous malformations, are covered. For each, clinical features, diagnosis, and genetics are described. Increasing evidence suggest that genetic factors are also important for the much more common multifactorial stroke; this evidence isreviewed along with the results of genetic studies in this area. Optimal and novel strategies for investigating multifactorial stroke, including the use of intermediate phenotypes such as intima-media thickness and MRI detected small vessel disease are reviewed. The book concludes by describing apractical approach to investigating patients with stroke for underlying genetic disorders. Also included is a list of useful websites.

Book Textbook of Vascular Medicine

Download or read book Textbook of Vascular Medicine written by Rhian M. Touyz and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-08-02 with total page 503 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This textbook focuses on the vascular biology and physiology that underlie vascular disorders in clinical medicine. Vascular biomedicine is a rapidly growing field as new molecular mechanisms of vascular health and disease are unraveled. Many of the major cardiovascular diseases including coronary artery disease, heart failure, stroke and vascular dementia are diseases of the vasculature. In addition vascular injury underpins conditions like kidney failure and cardiovascular complications of diabetes. This field is truly multidisciplinary involving scientists in many domains such as molecular and vascular biology, cardiovascular physiology and pharmacology and immunology and inflammation. Clinically, specialists across multiple disciplines are involved in the management of patients with vascular disorders, including cardiologists, nephrologists, endocrinologists, neurologists and vascular surgeons. This book covers a wide range of topics and provides an overview of the discipline of vascular biomedicine without aiming at in-depth reviews, but rather offering up-to-date knowledge organized in concise and structured chapters, with key points and pertinent references. The structure of the content provides an integrative and translational approach from basic science (e.g. stem cells) to clinical medicine (e.g. cardiovascular disease). The content of this book is targeted to those who are new in the field of vascular biology and vascular medicine and is ideal for medical students, graduate and postgraduate students, clinical fellows and academic clinicians with an interest in the vascular biology and physiology of cardiovascular disease and related pathologies.

  • Author : Ron Waksman
  • Publisher : CRC Press
  • Release : 2004-03-10
  • ISBN : 9781841843230
  • Pages : 250 pages

Download or read book The Vulnerable Plaque written by Ron Waksman and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2004-03-10 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although most in the field would agree that the vulnerable plaque is an important topic, there is still considerable disagreement over the precise meaning of this term and the related terms high-risk plaque and thrombosis-prone plaque. Until now very few books have been available that both define this rapidly evolving field and provide authoritative information for diagnosis and treatment. A comprehensive guide to understanding the many complexities of the vulnerable plaque and its role in interventional cardiology, Handbook of the Vulnerable Plaque defines vulnerable plaque, explains how it can be detected, and discusses the characteristics of possible candidates for vulnerable plaque. The book introduces the epidemiology, genetic determination, biology, and pathology of vulnerable plaques. Subsequent chapters on detection and diagnosis review biomarkers, MRI, intravascular thermography, intravascular ultrasound, and optical coherence tomography. It covers possible treatment options such as drug therapy, photodynamic therapy, and drug-eluting stents and concludes with chapters describing industry representation and device selection. An instructional tool, the handbook helps you hone your diagnostic capabilities and provides prevention and treatment strategies to reduce the incidence of acute coronary syndrome, acute myocardial infarction, and sudden cardiac death.
