Book excerpt: In the context of our increasingly globalized and digitalizedworld, libraries and archives are experiencing major changes. The methods used internationally to collect cultural heritageand other historical material are shifting, as new media haveadded important innovative tools for gathering, preserving, and sharing information around the globe. In light of our increasinglymulticultural societies and the expanding "digitaldivide," we need new and more inclusive approaches to thecollection of cultural heritage. This means that critical reflectionon both the contents of collections and methods of acquisitionis crucial. The International Information Center and Archives for theWomens Movement (IIAV) in Amsterdam provides a case studyin how to approach these issues. It considered such questionsas how to make optimal use of new media, and whose historiesshould be represented in its archives. In Traveling Heritages, international and national heritageexperts from academic, library, and archival professions reflectupon these questions, offering new perspectives on documentingwomens histories.

Book The UnDutchables

Download or read book The UnDutchables written by Colin White and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The UnDutchables: An Observation of the Netherlands, its culture, its inhabitants - "A sometimes funny, sometimes scathing portrayal of (Dutch) national habits." Washington Post. A cynically apt, precise yet funny scrutiny of the Netherlands. You may not have known that the Dutch can be laughed at. The book exposes that which is missing from the myriad of flattering photo-compilations & tourist books. After a historically-based introduction, the reader is advised: "The longer you stay, the deeper you sink in." There follows a satirical exploration of the most diverse aspects of daily Dutch life; from coffee to child rearing, from train travel to the toilet. Bikes: "They are called fiets, probably because that's what powers them." The Dutch flag: "With true originality, the national flag is the French tricolore turned sideways." White & Boucke know their subject matter inside out. As a leading Dutch daily newspaper explains it: "In a very exact yet funny way, The UnDutchable discloses all the secrets about us that we really would have preferred to keep to ourselves."

Book Effecten van armoede

Download or read book Effecten van armoede written by Godfried Bernard Maria Engbersen and published by Amsterdam University Press. This book was released on 1998 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book Political Decisions and Agency Performance

Download or read book Political Decisions and Agency Performance written by R. Torenvlied and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All over the world, many people who live in urban areas find themselves in an arduous social situation. In the third world, people in overcrowded metropolitan areas have a problem in maintaining even the slightest standards of living. But also richer parts of the world, the United States, Europe and the far-East, show growing social inequalities in their cities. And social problems are not confined to the large metropolitan areas: impoverishment, long-term unemployment, social isolation, and the dependency on welfare programs pops up in medium-sized cities and even in smaller communities. At the same time, these cities are confronted with a growing bureaucratic conglomerate which is increasingly inapt to fight social degeneration. The catastrophe seems to be total: how to deal at once with declining social conditions and bureaucratic inadequacy? Two American authors, Osborne and Plastrik (1997), claim to have found the answer: just banish bureaucracy. The liberating accomplishments of the free market will elevate ordinary citizens and force lazy, incompetent bureaucrats to do their work properly. If they succeed, they survive. Otherwise, these agencies will vanish. They illustrate their arguments with the American city of 'Uphill Battle' which stopped its decline by reinventing government. Strict performance measures, allotting financial controls and incentives to the citizens, and improving accountability have saved the city. We should, however, be very careful in taking such measures so far that they banish bureaucracy. It is far from obvious that simply banishing bureaucracy indeed will help people in poor social situations.
