This book was released on 2018-10-05 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Personal Narrative of the First Voyage of Columbus to America: From a Manuscript Recently Discovered in Spain It will he hardly necessary to remind the reader that he cannot expect to meet in this work with that regular order and elaborate execution displayed in modern works upon kindred subjects. A book of voyages or travels at the present day is not thought likely to prove acceptable with the public, unless drawn up with a lucid and methodical arrangement of matter, and a proper display of taste and care in the language. The authors of these writings never lose sight of the fact, or rather make it their sole contemplation, that the productions Of their industry will be judged of in the light Of literary performances, and this consideration demands from them the exercise of a judge ment and skill in the disposition of their matter, and se lection of their language, which it would be both vain and unreasonable to look for in a performance like the follow ing. Nothing was probably farther from the intentions or thoughts of Columbus and his transcriber in executing this volume, than to make a book and nothing could be per formed with a more settled disregard of the idea. Colum bus describes the objects which he saw, and the events which occurred from day to day, without essaying to give his narrative any greater portion of method or regularity. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Personal Narrative of Travels in Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, Kentucky: And of a Residence in the Illinois Territory, 1817-1818 For information regarding the personal history of Elias Pym F ordham, author of the narrative here with published, the Editor is indebted to Dr. Hubert de Laserre Spence, of Cleveland, Ohio, who has supplied not only a statement of his own knowledge of the enterprising young Englishman, but also a memorandum by his aunt, Sophia Worthington, and an interesting manuscript embodying the recollections of Mary Spence, his mother. The preparation of the notes has been facilitated to such a degree by recent volumes of Early Western Travels, 1748 - 1846, edited by Dr. Reuben Gold Thwaites, that special acknowledgment of obligation ought to be made for use of material in the early volumes of travel made accessible in that valuable series. Full titles of the works chie y referred to will be found in the list of con temporary travels at the end of this volume. It is hoped that the publication of the Fordham manu script may be oi service to students of Western history in general, and especially to those inter ested in the processes by which the composite popu lation of the Mississippi Valley was built up in the great era of migration. Download or read book Personal Narrative of Travels in Virginia Maryland Pennsylvania Ohio Indiana Kentucky written by Elias Pym Fordham and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Explosive growth in settlement took place in the Northwest Territory following the end of the War of 1812. Settlers came from the American seaboard and from Europe, especially England, which lost many of its middle-class farmers and artisans. One such settlement was the agricultural colony called the English Prairie, in southeastern Illinois in what is now Edwards County. Among its first settlers was a young engineer, Elias Pym Fordham, who kept journals which he sent back to England with his letters to his family. Those writings are here collected into a fascinating description of frontier life in the new republic. As the editor states in the introduction, Fordham describes "the land and people of Virginia, a voyage up the Chesapeake, a trip on the Pennsylvania Road from Baltimore to Pittsburg, the people of western Pennsylvania, the city of Pittsburg, the descent of the Ohio to Cincinnati by flat-boat, the land and people of southern Indiana, establishing the settlement at English Prairie, hardships of the first winter, the surveying and entering of public land, prices, wages, and labor in the West, the classes of people on the frontiers, a trip through Kentucky to Cincinnati, the Rappite settlement at New Harmony, and prospects for English emigrants in the American interior." An index to full-names, places and subjects augments the narrative.
