Download or read book Wonderful Things A History of Egyptology Volume 1 written by Jason Thompson and published by American University in Cairo Press. This book was released on 2015-03-01 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The discovery of ancient Egypt and the development of Egyptology are momentous events in intellectual and cultural history. The history of Egyptology is the story of the people, famous and obscure, who constructed the picture of ancient Egypt that we have today, recovered the Egyptian past while inventing it anew, and made a lost civilization comprehensible to generations of enchanted readers and viewers thousands of years later. This, the first of a three-volume survey of the history of Egyptology, follows the fascination with ancient Egypt from antiquity until 1881, tracing the recovery of ancient Egypt and its impact on the human imagination in a saga filled with intriguing mysteries, great discoveries, and scholarly creativity. Wonderful Things affirms that the history of ancient Egypt has proved continually fascinating, but it also demonstrates that the history of Egyptology is no less so. Only by understanding how Egyptology has developed can we truly understand the Egyptian past.
Download or read book Society and Economy in Egypt and the Eastern Mediterranean 1600 1900 written by Raouf Abbas and published by American University in Cairo Press. This book was released on 2005-11-01 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his long academic career, historian André Raymond has been one of the foremost scholars of urban history in the Arab world, and in particular of Cairo during the Ottoman period. His work was instrumental in changing orientalist views on the decline and stagnation of this region prior to the modern period, and has inspired researchers across the academic spectrum. This diverse collection of studies by leading scholars in Egypt, the United States, and Europe offers a wide selection of recent research in Ottoman-era Egypt and the Middle East, and serves as a fitting tribute to Raymond's own work. A main theme of this volume is the urban society and economy in Egypt and the eastern Mediterranean of the seventeenth to nineteenth centuries, suggesting new ways through which the history of this period can be understood. Topics include a comparison of Egypt's experiences with Italy's in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, and an investigation of European attitudes toward the Orient through the travel accounts of Russian pilgrims to the Levant. Contributors: Husam Muhammad Abd al-Muati, Sabri al-Adl, Magdi Guirguis, Pascale Ghazaleh, Peter Gran, Svetlana Kirillina, Afaf Lutfi al-Sayyid Marsot, Nicolas Michel, Abdul Karim Rafeq, Amira Sonbol.

Download or read book Libraries and Enlightenment written by Gina Dahl and published by Aarhus Universitetsforlag. This book was released on 2014-10-30 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the Enlightenment, other peoples, and also their cultures, were much discussed, with debates often focusing on their value as human beings and the level of tolerance that they were to be granted. Books on 'outer worlds', classified in libraries as historia, were an integral part of these deliberations as they conveyed distinct perceptions of peoples and places to their readers. This book explores how the broader world was presented to a Norwegian audience by means of both statistical analysis of books on 'the other' in Enlightenment libraries and consideration of how peoples were portrayed in bestselling works. Intriguingly, book distribution was very uneven, and the views that the bestsellers promoted were as multifaceted as the Enlightenment itself, with the texts expressing both prejudice and admiration, depending on the identity of the author and thee very context in which they were written.

Download or read book The Works of William Congreve written by Donald McKenzie and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2011-04-07 with total page 592 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The late D. F. McKenzie worked on this comprehensive edition of the works of the playwright, poet, librettist, and novelist William Congreve for more than twenty years, until his sudden death in 1999. This was a task he had taken over from Herbert Davis, to whom this edition is dedicated. During that time McKenzie uncovered new verse and letters, collated Congreve's texts, recorded their complicated textual history, constructed appendices that shed light on the dramatic context in which Congreve worked, and examined how his contemporaries received Congreve's work. More importantly, McKenzie has convincingly re-evaluated Congreve's works and life to transform our image of the man and his reputation. McKenzie here follows the editorial practice suggested in two early editions of the Works published by Congreve's friend, the bookseller Jacob Tonson, in 1710 and 1719. These three volumes follow a plan similar to that in the Tonson edition, with The Old Batchelor, The Double-Dealer, and Love for Love collected in the first, a central volume with The Way of the World, and a final volume with Congreve's novel Incognita, some of his prose works, letters, and later verse. In each case, Congreve's work is left to speak for itself, unencumbered by intrusive notes, textual apparatus, or collations, which are gathered instead near the end of each volume. This edition will be an invaluable resource for scholars for many years to come. It is a monument to McKenzie's own scholarship as well as to the integrity of William Congreve.
