Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is there a Universe? Bafflingly, scientific cosmologists, from Einstein to Hawking, have invariably failed to face up to this question. This is all the more curious because some of them have claimed to know that the universe can only be such as prescribed by their theories. Some even claimed that their expertise enables them to create, in theory at least, entire universes literally out of nothing. For their strange attitudes towards the universe, this greatest object of empirical human enquiry, scientists have not been taken to task by philosophers. No wonder. The universe has become orphaned by modern philosophy. In this book the author, a renowned historian and philosopher of science, and especially of astronomy and cosmology, probes into this puzzling state of affairs. He also points out that slighting the question, Is there a Universe?, has serious consequences for science as well as for philosophy, to say nothing of theology. Most importantly, he shows that it is possible to answer the question, Is there a Universe?, in a convincingly demonstrative way.

Book The Newton Wars the Beginning of the French Enlightenment

Download or read book The Newton Wars the Beginning of the French Enlightenment written by J.B. Shank and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2008-09-15 with total page 590 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nothing is considered more natural than the connection between Isaac Newton’s science and the modernity that came into being during the eighteenth-century Enlightenment. Terms like “Newtonianism” are routinely taken as synonyms for “Enlightenment” and “modern” thought, yet the particular conjunction of these terms has a history full of accidents and contingencies. Modern physics, for example, was not the determined result of the rational unfolding of Newton’s scientific work in the eighteenth century, nor was the Enlightenment the natural and inevitable consequence of Newton’s eighteenth-century reception. Each of these outcomes, in fact, was a contingent event produced by the particular historical developments of the early eighteenth century. A comprehensive study of public culture, The Newton Wars and the Beginning of the French Enlightenment digsbelow the surface of the commonplace narratives that link Newton with Enlightenment thought to examine the actual historical changes that brought them together in eighteenth-century time and space. Drawing on the full range of early modern scientific sources, from studied scientific treatises and academic papers to book reviews, commentaries, and private correspondence, J. B. Shank challenges the widely accepted claim that Isaac Newton’s solitary genius is the reason for his iconic status as the father of modern physics and the philosophemovement.

Book Voltaire

Download or read book Voltaire written by Ian Davidson and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2012-03-12 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The definitive biography of Voltaire's life—from his scandalous love affairs and political maneuverings to his inspired philosophy. We think of Voltaire as the archetypal figure of the enlightenment; in his own time he was also the most famous and controversial figure in Europe. This dazzling new biography celebrates his extraordinary life. Davidson tells the whole, rich story of Voltaire’s life (1694-1778): his early imprisonment in the Bastille; exile in England and his mastery of English; an obsession with money, of which he made a huge amount; a scandalous love life; a long exile on the borders of Switzerland; his human-rights campaigns and his triumphant return to Paris to die there as celebrity extraordinaire. Throughout all of this, Voltaire’s life was always informed by two things: a belief in the essential value of toleration in the face of fanaticism; and in the right of every man to think and say what he liked. It is rare to have such a vivid portrait of a great man.

Book Debunking Voltaire A Christian Critique

Download or read book Debunking Voltaire A Christian Critique written by Advanced Apologetics Research and published by Dr. Samuel Inbaraja S . This book was released on 2024-09-24 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Voltaire’s ideas were profoundly shaped by Enlightenment thinkers, including those who championed Deism—a belief in a distant, uninvolved creator. However, the cognitive biases that Voltaire displayed, such as his predisposition to favor secularism and his antagonism towards organized religion, led him to overlook the moral and existential truths that Christianity provides. Through critical examination, we will highlight these cognitive biases and the logical errors in his philosophical system. For instance, one major logical flaw in Voltaire’s reasoning is his simplistic association of religious belief with the abuses of religious institutions. By conflating institutional corruption with the essence of Christian teaching, Voltaire erected a straw man that is easily dismantled. Similarly, Voltaire’s hermeneutic approach—his interpretation of sacred texts—reveals numerous errors. He often misrepresented or misunderstood biblical passages, failing to grasp the historical and theological context within which they were written. Furthermore, Voltaire’s understanding of science, though ahead of his time in some respects, was incomplete. His critique of miracles, for example, rested on a narrow view of natural laws that contemporary science has since expanded. Voltaire’s critiques of Christianity in light of science often relied on outdated or superficial scientific concepts, which we will examine in later chapters.

Book Voltaire in Love

Download or read book Voltaire in Love written by Nancy Mitford and published by New York Review of Books. This book was released on 2012-11-06 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The inimitable Nancy Mitford’s account of Voltaire’s fifteen-year relationship with the Marquise du Châtelet—the renowned mathematician who introduced Isaac Newton’s revolutionary new physics to France—is a spirited romp in the company of two extraordinary individuals as well as an erudite and gossipy guide to French high society during the Enlightenment. Mitford’s story is as delicious as it is complicated. The marquise was in love with another mathematician, Maupertuis, while she had an unexpected rival for Voltaire’s affections in the future Frederick the Great of Prussia (and later in the philosophe’s own niece). There was, at least, no jealous husband to contend with: the Marquis du Châtelet, Mitford assures us, behaved perfectly. The beau monde of Paris was, however, distraught at the idea of the lovers’ brilliant conversation going to waste on the windswept hills of Champagne, site of the Château de Cirey, where experimental laboratories, a darkroom, and a library of more than twenty-one thousand volumes enabled them to pursue their amours philosophiques. From time to time the threat of impending arrest would send Voltaire scurrying across the border into Holland, but his irrepressible charm—and the interventions of powerful friends—always made it possible for him resume his studies with the cherished marquise.
