Book Worlds of Sense

  • Pages : 166 pages

Download or read book Worlds of Sense written by Constance Classen and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-02-28 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1993, Worlds of Sense is an exploration of the historical and cultural formation of the senses. As the author demonstrates, different cultures have strikingly different ways of ‘making sense’ of the world. In the modern urban West, we are accustomed to thinking in terms of visual models such as ‘world view,’ whereas the Ongee of the Andaman Islands, for example, live in a world ordered by smell and the Tzotzil of Mexico hold that temperature is the basic force of the cosmos. In a fascinating examination of the role of the senses in diverse societies and eras, Constance Classen shows the extent to which perception is shaped by and expressive of cultural values. This book will be of interest to students of cultural studies, sociology, anthropology, and philosophy.

Book excerpt: The Crimson Conquest is an adventure tale set in the time of the Spanish conquest of Peru. Though the story has been dramatized to entertain the readers, it is filled with actual figures and events and maintains a high degree of historical accuracy. The author explores the adventures of Francisco Pizzaro, a Spanish conquistador famous for his expeditions that led to the Spanish conquest of Peru. He served as mayor of the newly established Panama City for a few years and embarked on two failed expeditions to Peru. In 1529, Pizarro got permission from the Spanish crown to conquer Peru and went on his third expedition and succeeded in it. When the coast inhabitants opposed this invasion, Pizarro moved inland and found the first Spanish settlement in Peru, San Miguel de Piura. Ultimately, he entered the Inca capital of Cuzco and finished his conquest of Peru.

Book History of the Incas and the Execution of the Inca Tupac Amaru

Download or read book History of the Incas and the Execution of the Inca Tupac Amaru written by Pedro Sarmiento De Gamboa and published by Cosimo, Inc.. This book was released on 2007-11-01 with total page 442 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spanish explorer and historian PEDRO SARMIENTO DE GAMBOA (1532-1592) spent more than twenty years in Peru. During that time he collected what was, at the time of its writing in 1572, the most accurate history of Incan civilization. De Gamboa personally interviewed many Incas around Cuzco in order to hear the songs and stories of their ancestors. This history was not gathered without an ulterior motive, however. De Gamboa aimed to show that the Inca were cruel tyrants who had usurped the land they were living on when the Spaniards found them. By showing that the Inca deserved the treatment they got from the Spanish crown, De Gamboa hoped to save his country's reputation on the world stage. Scholars and amateur historians will find here fascinating Incan mythology as well as thorough explanations of Incan society. This replica of a 1907 British edition also includes The Execution of the Inca Tupac Amaru, by the 16th-century Spaniard CAPTAIN BALTASAR DE OCAMPO.
