Book Miradas Transatl nticas

Download or read book Miradas Transatl nticas written by Alicia Rita Rueda-Acedo and published by Purdue University Press. This book was released on 2012 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Women's voices routinely have been muted or omitted entirely when a nation assembles its historical narrative. In Miradas Transatlánticas: El periodismo literario de Elena Poniatowska y Rosa Montero, Alicia Rita Rueda-Acedo examines the relationship between the journalistic and literary work of the two writers named in the title as they utilize a distinct combination of journalism and fiction to create new spaces where women's voices and experiences may be situated prominently in their nations' historical narratives. Rueda-Acedo analyzes the works of the two writers from the perspectives of both gender and genre studies, extending the notion of genre from the literary tradition and applying it to journalistic production. Each of the chapters rethinks and revises the concept of literary genres by arguing for the inclusion of the interview, the reportage, the article, and the chronicle within the category of literature. In her study of Las siete cabritas by Poniatowska and Historias de mujeres by Montero, Rueda-Acedo argues successfully that these are works of homage to women who have influenced history. By interpreting and subverting patriarchal models, the writers draw attention to the ways in which women have engaged Mexican, Spanish, and Universal history. Rueda-Acedo focuses on the characteristics of the journalistic interview and proposes its interpretation as a literary text. A poetics of this genre is also proposed. Rueda-Acedo's study explores how Poniatowska and Montero represent women who have marked history as part of the feminist agenda that the two writers have promoted in their journalistic and literary production. The book also emphasizes the role of the two writers as researchers and critics and deepens the vibrant debate about the relationship between literature and journalism currently being discussed on both sides of the Atlantic.

Book excerpt: Papers presented in the 19th International Colloquium of History of Art held in the city of Puebla in 2005. This was a unique multidisciplinary event around the general thematic of "gender and sex" that represented a new social attitude with notable repercussions in the generation and analysis of artistic works. The presentations were divided in 3 parts: 1) The critical representations of norms, hegemonic practices, marginal fields and deviations are becoming a more frequent (and less exceptional) aspect in art history, hence forcing a reformulation of art studies, 2) the use of anatomical representations as media, format or support to represent various meanings: political, of gender, religion, moral and family history; and 3) the analytical, curatorial and historiography postmodernism theories that study transexuality, feminism, patriarchal society and discrimination.

  • Author : Tara Daly
  • Publisher : Rutgers University Press

Download or read book Beyond Human written by Tara Daly and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 2019-02-15 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the Andes, indigenous knowledge systems based on the relationships between different beings, both earthly and heavenly, animal and plant, have been central to the organization of knowledge since precolonial times. The legacies of colonialism and the continuance of indigenous cultures make the Andes a unique place from which to think about art and social change as ongoing, and as encompassing more than an exclusively human perspective. Beyond Human revises established readings of the avant-gardes in Peru and Bolivia as humanizing and historical. By presenting fresh readings of canonical authors like César Vallejo, José María Arguedas, and Magda Portal, and through analysis of newer artist-activists like Julieta Paredes, Mujeres Creando Comunidad, and Alejandra Dorado, Daly argues instead that avant-gardes complicate questions of agency and contribute to theoretical discussions on vital materialisms: the idea that life happens between animate and inanimate beings—human and non-human—and is made sensible through art. Published by Bucknell University Press. Distributed worldwide by Rutgers University Press.
