Book Muslim Europe Or Euro Islam

Download or read book Muslim Europe Or Euro Islam written by Nezar AlSayyad and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2002 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Five centuries after the expulsion of Muslims and Jews from Spain, Europe is once again becoming a land of Islam. At the beginning of a new millennium, and in an era marked as one of globalization, Europe continues to wrestle with the issue of national identity, especially in the context of its Muslim citizens. Muslim Europe or Euro-Islam brings together distinguished scholars from Europe, the United States, and the Middle East in a dynamic discussion about the Muslim populations living in Europe and about Europe's role in framing Islam today. Working at the knotty intersection of cultural identity, the politics of nations and nationalisms, and religious persuasions, this is an invaluable anthology of scholarship that reveals the multifaceted natures of both Europe and Islam.

Book Half Sound Half Philosophy

  • Author : Jing Wang
  • Publisher : Bloomsbury Publishing USA
  • Release : 2021-01-14
  • ISBN : 1501333496
  • Pages : 247 pages

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the late 1990s until today, China's sound practice has been developing in an increasingly globalized socio-political-aesthetic milieu, receiving attentions and investments from the art world, music industry and cultural institutes, with nevertheless, its unique acoustic philosophy remaining silent. This book traces the history of sound practice from contemporary Chinese visual art back in the 1980s, to electronic music, which was introduced as a target of critique in the 1950s, to electronic instrument building fever in the late 1970s and early 1980s, and to the origins of both academic and nonacademic electronic and experimental music activities. This expansive tracing of sound in the arts resonates with another goal of this book, to understand sound and its artistic practice through notions informed by Chinese qi-cosmology and qi-philosophy, including notions of resonance, shanshui (mountains-waters), huanghu (elusiveness and evasiveness), and distributed monumentality and anti-monumentality. By turning back to deep history to learn about the meaning and function of sound and listening in ancient China, the book offers a refreshing understanding of the British sinologist Joseph Needham's statement that “Chinese acoustics is acoustics of qi.” and expands existing conceptualization of sound art and contemporary music at large.

Book Catalogue de Timbres de France 2019

Download or read book Catalogue de Timbres de France 2019 written by Spink Maury and published by Spink Books. This book was released on 2018-09-01 with total page 1146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A catalogue made by collectors for collectors. This year the Spink Maury Catalogue, heir to the prestigious Maury, Ceres and Dallay catalogues, continues its work of research, compiled over generations of philately. It covers all French stamps from 1849 to the present day, offering hundreds of changes – with oddities, new varieties and discoveries presented, as always, in an exceptional way. Included in the new material is the continuation of the monographic studies, presenting a stamp per page with all varieties known until the First World War; a redesign of types Merson and Pasteur; and a specialised part devoted to Marianne de Beaujard, reviewed in depth. In addition the section on current usage stamps (TUC) is fully updated following feedback from our contributors and readers. France has one of the most beautiful philatelic legacies in the world, and we are pleased to be its modest ambassador to the numerous international readers who join us each year. “Layout and coverage are sumptuous … The trite phrase “mine of information” does not begin to do justice to this immense achievement. To any collector of France beyond the elementary stage, this would be a bargain at twice the official retail price … Highly recommended. ….an absolute must for collectors of French stamps…” Michael Round, Journal of the France & Colonies Philatelic Society

Book Fernando Pessoa and Philosophy

Download or read book Fernando Pessoa and Philosophy written by Bartholomew Ryan and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2021-10-21 with total page 447 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This pioneering volume explores the extraordinary Portuguese poet Fernando Pessoa (1888–1935) and his relationship to philosophy. On the one hand, this book reveals Pessoa’s serious knowledge of philosophy and playful philosophical explorations and how he has the gift of synthesizing, appropriating, and subverting complex ideas into his art; and, on the other hand, the chapters shed new light on central aspects and problems of philosophy through the prism of Pessoa’s diverse writings. The volume includes sixteen new essays from an international group of scholars, analyzing Pessoa’s multifaceted poetic work alongside philosophical themes and movements, from conceptions of time, ancient and modern aesthetics, philosophy of language, transcendentalism, immanence, and nihilism; to Islamic philosophy, Indian philosophy, Daoism, neo-paganism, and the philosophy of the self. The breadth of his work provides a springboard for new thinking on the aesthetic and the spiritual, the logic of value and capitalist modernity, and ecological thought and postmodernism. The volume also includes the most complete English translation of Pessoa's text (written by his heteronym Álvaro de Campos) called "Notes for the Memory of my Master Caeiro."

Book excerpt: An anthology of skeptical viewpoints of European integration has long been missing, yet the need for students to have a spectrum of opinion on the EU has never been greater. As the new European currency's exchange rate plunged throughout the first two years of its existence and the Danes voted against joining up, this reader provides a timely corrective to the dominant view of 'Euro-success.' Exploring the underreported and often mischaracterized 'Euro-skeptic' side of arguments over the goals and methods of European integration, the text presents a selection of the key sources necessary to understand European politics on the ground today. Ron Tiersky brings together here 'Euro-skeptic, ' 'Euro-pessimistic, ' and 'Euro-phobic' speeches, essays, and other documents that illustrate the range of both mainstream and extremist opposition to the European Union. Balancing against the integrationist goal of federalism, the book gives a full airing to the national sovereignty and national identity-based arguments against union and shows how Euro-skepticism finds a place on both the right and the lef

Book Europe as an Economic Powerhouse

Download or read book Europe as an Economic Powerhouse written by Heino Fassbender and published by Kogan Page Publishers. This book was released on 2007 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Europe as an Economic Powerhouse asserts that Europe's economic performance is far below its true potential. Europe's twin challenges today are to overcome obstacles to meeting its fundamental objectives and to strengthen the economy in the face of increasing internal and external pressures. Part 1 analyses the state of the European Union, with a particular focus on social security, social justice, employment, and productivity. While the analysis recognizes best practice in the United States, it also points out that simply copying features of the US model is not the answer. Part 2 identifies a "European way" of boosting productivity sustainably to turn Europe into an economic powerhouse that is on equal footing with the US. The authors recommend concentrating on four critical objectives: completing the single market, adopting smart regulation, systematically pursuing category definition, and transforming the state system. The last chapter sets out a series of enablers of change including continued harmonization of Europe's educational systems, coping with the demographic problem, and better engagement in the ongoing processes of globalization.

This book consists of two parts. The first offers a fertile resource (epistemological and theoretical) to consider the notion of talent, as well as notions of potential, intelligence and business skills. The second part, in turn, investigates ten major families of talents (or “Natural Operating Modes”). From Marie Curie to Walt Disney, Hans Zimmer, Gabrielle Chanel and Claude Lévi-Strauss, the illustrations and examples are intended to be precise and demonstrative. Skills relating to observation, evaluation and elucidation are developed in detail and complemented with concrete examples. Both managers and employees can use this book to acquire the solid bases required to potentiate and develop their talents within their respective company and beyond.
