Book excerpt: From the author of the New York Times bestseller that defined nature-deficit disorder and launched the international children-and-nature movement, Vitamin N (for “nature”) is a complete prescription for connecting with the power and joy of the natural world right now, with 500 activities for children and adults Dozens of inspiring and thought-provoking essays Scores of informational websites Down-to-earth advice In his landmark work Last Child in the Woods, Richard Louv was the first to bring widespread attention to the alienation of children from the natural world, coining the term nature-deficit disorder and outlining the benefits of a strong nature connection--from boosting mental acuity and creativity to reducing obesity and depression, from promoting health and wellness to simply having fun. That book “rivaled Rachel Carson’s Silent Spring” (the Cincinnati Enquirer), was “an absolute must-read for parents” (the Boston Globe), and “an inch-thick caution against raising the fully automated child” (the New York Times). His follow-up book, The Nature Principle, addressed the needs of adults and outlined a “new nature movement and its potential to improve the lives of all people no matter where they live” (McClatchy Newspapers).Vitamin N is a one-of-a-kind, comprehensive, and practical guidebook for the whole family and the wider community, including tips not only for parents eager to share nature with their kids but also for those seeking nature-smart schools, medical professionals, and even careers. It is a dose of pure inspiration, reminding us that looking up at the stars or taking a walk in the woods is as exhilarating as it is essential, at any age.
Download or read book Clinical use of vitamins written by Sics Editore and published by SICS Editore. This book was released on 2014-10-01 with total page 47 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The vitamin requirement of the human body is usually met by adequate nutrition. In northern countries like Finland, however, insufficient intake of vitamin D is common. Risk groups for vitamin deficiencies include small children, immigrants, people on a vegan diet, elderly with inadequate food intake, alcoholics, and patients suffering from severe systemic diseases. In these groups the prophylactic use of vitamins may be beneficial, and diagnosed vitamin deficiencies should be actively treated. Consider vitamin deficiency as a possible cause of vague or non-specific symptoms (such as aches, loss of strength, rashes) in the risk groups.Determination of the vitamin D concentration is recommended for special groups (particularly for patients with osteoporosis). From the point of view of bone health the target level of serum vitamin 25-OH-D concentration is 75–100 nmol/l.

Download or read book Silent Victories written by John W. Ward and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2007 with total page 507 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Americans' health improved dramatically over the twentieth century. Public health programs for disease and injury prevention were responsible for much of this advance. Over the century, America's public health system grew dramatically, employing science and political authority in response to an increasing array of health problems. As the disease burden of the old scourges of infection, perinatal mortality, and dietary deficiencies began to lift, public health's mandate expanded to take on new health threats, such as those resulting from a changing workplace, the rise of the automobile, and chronic and complex conditions caused by smoking, diet and other lifestyle and environmental factors. Public health measures almost always occur on contested ground; accordingly, controversies and recriminations over past failures often persist. In contrast, public health's many successes, even the imperfect ones, become part of the fabric of everyday life, a fact already apparent early in the last century, when C.E.A. Winslow reminded his peers that the lives saved and healthy years extended were the "silent victories" of public health. In its exploration of ten major public health issues addressed in the 20th century, Silent Victories takes a unique approach: for each issue, leading scientists in the field trace the discoveries, practices and programs that reduced morbidity and mortality from disease and injury, and an accompanying chapter by a historian or social scientist highlights key moments or conflicts that shaped public health action on that issue. The book concludes with a look toward the challenges public health must face in the future. Silent Victories reveals the lessons of history in a format designed to appeal to students, health professionals and the public seeking to understand how public health advanced the country's health in the 20th century, and the challenges to protecting health in the future.
Download or read book Sustainability in Food Consumption and Food Security written by József H.c. Popp and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2020-12-15 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The transformation of food chains towards sustainability in food consumption and food security is a global issue, connected with the global challenges of poverty reduction, employment and urbanization. Combating malnutrition—undernutrition and micronutrient deficiencies—as well as overweight and obesity is an increasing problem. The main topics to be examined are the following: Ensuring sustainable food production (land and sea), sustainable diets and sustainable communities, including issues for agricultural transformation in face of increasing competition for land use; promoting healthy food systems and increasing the focus on nutrition, with multiple implications for diet quality, vulnerable groups, and informed choice; biotechnology could play an important role in climate change mitigation (e.g., nutrient-efficient plants) and adaptation (e.g., drought-tolerant plants), renewable energies, biodegradable products, rural development, and global food security; identifying the means to promote resilience, including resilience in ecosystems and in international markets; responding to climate change and other environmental and social change. The focus should also cover issues for vulnerable groups such as mothers and children, the elderly, patients, and migrants to understand the general aspects of consumer behavior. Sustainability related to product standards and reactions of consumers to these standards are also of great importance.
