Book Visual Examinations of K East Fuel Elements

Download or read book Visual Examinations of K East Fuel Elements written by and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 59 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Selected fuel elements stored in both ''good fuel'' and ''bad fuel'' canisters in K East Basin were extracted and visually examined full length for damage. Lower end damage in the ''bad fuel'' canisters was found to be more severe than expected based on top end appearances. Lower end damage for the ''good fuel'' canisters, however, was less than expected based on top end observations. Since about half of the fuel in K East Basin is contained in ''good fuel'' canisters based on top end assessments, the fraction of fuel projected to be intact with respect to IPS processing considerations remains at 50% based on these examination results.

Book IN CELL Visual Examinations of K East Fuel Elements

Download or read book IN CELL Visual Examinations of K East Fuel Elements written by and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nine outer fuel elements were recovered from the K East Basin and transferred to a hot cell for examination. Extensive testing planned for these elements will support the process design for the Integrated Process Strategy (IPS), with emphasis on drying and conditioning behavior. Visual examinations of the fuel elements confirmed that they are appropriate to meet testing objectives to provide design guidance for IPS processing parameters.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A statistical evaluation of K West fuel visual examination results was performed in an attempt to correlate observed fuel damage levels with parameters known from storage records and parameters obtained from in-basin measurements.

Book Examination of the Surface Coating Removed from K East Basin Fuel Elements

Download or read book Examination of the Surface Coating Removed from K East Basin Fuel Elements written by and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 31 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report provides the results of studies conducted on coatings discovered on the surfaces of some N-Reactor spent nuclear fuel (SNF) elements stored at the Hanford K-East Basin. These elements had been removed from the canisters and visually examined in-basin during FY 1996 as part of a series of characterization tests. The characterization tests are being performed to support the Integrated Process Strategy developed to package, dry, transport, and store the SNF in an interim storage facility on the Hanford site. Samples of coating materials were removed from K-East canister elements 2350E and 2540E, which had been sent, along with nine other elements, to the Postirradiation Testing Laboratory (327 Building) for further characterization following the in-basin examinations. These coating samples were evaluated by Pacific Northwest National Laboratory using various analytical methods. This report is part of the overall studies to determine the drying behavior of corrosion products associated with the K-Basin fuel elements. Altogether, five samples of coating materials were analyzed. These analyses suggest that hydration of the coating materials could be an additional source of moisture in the Multi-Canister Overpacks being used to contain the fuel for storage.

Book Test Plan for Techniques to Measure and Remove Coatings from K West Basin Fuel Elements

Download or read book Test Plan for Techniques to Measure and Remove Coatings from K West Basin Fuel Elements written by and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Several types of coatings have previously been visually identified on the surface of 105-K East and 105-K West Basins fuel elements. One type of coating (found only in K West Basin) in particular was found to be a thick translucent material that was often seen to be dislodged from the elements as flakes when the elements were handled during visual examinations (Pitner 1997). Subsequently it was determined (for one element only in a hot cell) that this material, in the dry condition, could easily be removed from the element using a scraping tool. The coating was identified as Al(OH)3 through X-ray diffraction (XRD) analyses and to be approximately 60 [mu]m thick via scanning electron microscopy (SEM). However, brushing under water in the basin using numerous mechanical strokes failed to satisfactorily remove these coatings in their thickest form as judged by appearance. Such brushing was done with only one type of metal brush, a brush design previously found satisfactory for removing UO4.xH2O coatings from the elements.

Book Swelling Behavior of KSE 5 Fuel Elements KER Test K 1 22

Download or read book Swelling Behavior of KSE 5 Fuel Elements KER Test K 1 22 written by and published by . This book was released on 1964 with total page 4 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Production Test IP-544-A authorized the irradiation testing of coextruded Zr-2 jacketed, single tube, thick walled, 1.6 percent enriched tubular elements (KSE-5's) in KER loops 1 and 2 to evaluate swelling behavior at high uranium temperatures. This PT was intended to permit the evaluation of uranium swelling at N-reactor environmental conditions but at considerably higher uranium temperatures than those occurring in N-reactor fuel. Evaluation of the fuel performances at the authorized maximum fuel temperatures in the 550--600 C temperature range is essential in the design and analysis of single tube fuel elements for use in N-reactor. The test was subsequently supplemented to authorize the irradiation of uranium fuel containing up to 3000 ppm alloying agents for the evaluation of swelling behavior at the high uranium temperatures. This report describes the swelling behavior of a charge of 8 KSE-5 fuel elements irradiated in KER loop 1 to appproximately 2500 MWD/T as Test K-1-22. KER Test K-1-22 is similar (except for exposure level) to KER Test K-2-21 in which a charge of 8 KSE-5 fuel elements were irradiated to 1500 MWD/T. In both tests the charges consisted of 4 KSE-5's containing uranium with low iron and silicon additions (N-reactor fuel composition) and 4 KSE-5's containing uranium with 400 ppm iron and 800 ppm aluminum. The objective of both tests was to obtain comparative swelling performance data for the two fuel compositions under identical irradiation conditions.
