Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By the time of the Armistice, Villers-Bretonneux - once a lively and flourishing French town - had been largely destroyed, and half its population had fled or died. From March to August 1918, Villers-Bretonneux formed part of an active front line, at which Australian troops were heavily involved. As a result, it holds a significant place in Australian history. Villers-Bretonneux has since become an open-air memorial to Australia's participation in the First World War. Successive Australian governments have valourised the Australian engagement, contributing to an evolving Anzac narrative that has become entrenched in Australia's national identity. Our Corner of the Somme provides an eye-opening analysis of the memorialisation of Australia's role on the Western Front and the Anzac mythology that so heavily contributes to Australians' understanding of themselves. In this rigorous and richly detailed study, Romain Fathi challenges accepted historiography by examining the assembly, projection and performance of Australia's national identity in northern France.

Book Math Stuff

    Book Details:
  • Author : William N. Bailey
  • Publisher : iUniverse
  • Release : 2000-12
  • ISBN : 0595149030
  • Pages : 190 pages

Download or read book Math Stuff written by William N. Bailey and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2000-12 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A must read for teachers of mathematics! The perrennial question, "When will I ever use this stuff," prompts a parent to look deeply into his son's math program. In his search for the scope and meaning of "stuff," he finds that the subject of math is totally unlike any other high school subject. Also apparent is that promoted reforms whether politically motivated, profit driven, or theoretically rooted in educational psychology, good or bad, generally have a poor long term success rate. The semi-fictional, often-humorous style of "Math Stuff" provides a multi-dimensional view of the diverse elements of reform that, to be effective, must be jointly addressed. Taking a cue from a good math teacher, the book does not give the answers but rather suggests what to think about while determining them.

Book Thank You for Dying for Our Country

Download or read book Thank You for Dying for Our Country written by Chaim Noy and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2015-06-08 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Combining ethnographic, semiotic, and performative approaches, this book examines texts and accompanying acts of writing of national commemoration. The commemorative visitor book is viewed as a mobilized stage, a communication medium, where visitors' public performances are presented, and where acts of participation are authored and composed. The study contextualizes the visitor book within the material and ideological environment where it is positioned and where it functions. The semiotics of commemoration are mirrored in the visitor book, which functions as a participatory platform that becomes an extension of the commemorative spaces in the museum. The study addresses tourists' and visitors' texts, i.e. the commemorative entries in the book, which are succinct dialogical utterances. Through these public performances, individuals and groups of visitors align and affiliate with a larger imagined national community. Reading the entries allows a unique perspective on communication practices and processes, and vividly illustrates such concepts as genre, voice, addressivity, indexicality, and the very acts of writing and reading. The book's many entries tell stories of affirming, but also resisting the narrative tenets of Zionist national identity, and they illustrate the politics of gender and ethnicity in Israel society. The book presents many ethnographic observations and interviews, which were done both with the management of the site (Ammunition Hill National Memorial Site), and with the visitors themselves. The observations shed light on processes and practices involved in writing and reading, and on how visitors decide on what to write and how they collaborate on drafting their entries. The interviews with the site's management also illuminate the commemoration projects, and how museums and exhibitions are staged and managed.

Book Rock Art Studies News of the World

Download or read book Rock Art Studies News of the World written by Natalie R. Franklin and published by Oxbow Books. This book was released on 2008-08-05 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the third in the five-yearly series of surveys of what is happening in rock art studies around the world. As always, the texts reflect something of the great differences in approach and emphasis that exist in different regions. The volume presents examples from Europe, Asia, Africa, and the New World. During the period in question, 1999 to 2004, there have been few major events, although in the field of Pleistocene art many new discoveries have been made, and a new country added to the select list of those with Ice Age cave art. Some regions such as North Africa and the former USSR have seen a tremendous amount of activity, focusing not only on recording but also on chronology, and the conservation of sites. With the global increase of tourism, the management of rock art sites that are accessible to the public is a theme of ever-growing importance.

Book The Afterlife of the Leiden Anatomical Collections

Download or read book The Afterlife of the Leiden Anatomical Collections written by Hieke Huistra and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-11-02 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Afterlife of the Leiden Anatomical Collections starts where most stories end: after death. It tells the story of thousands of body parts kept in bottles and boxes in nineteenth-century Leiden – a story featuring a struggling medical student, more than one disappointed anatomist, a monstrous child, and a glorious past. Hieke Huistra blends historical analysis, morbid anecdotes, and humour to show how anatomical preparations moved into the hands of students and researchers, and out of the reach of lay audiences. In the process, she reveals what a centuries-old collection can teach us about the future fate of the biobanks we build today.

Book Whatever is Under the Earth the Geological Society of London 1807 2007

Download or read book Whatever is Under the Earth the Geological Society of London 1807 2007 written by G. L. Herries Davies and published by Geological Society of London. This book was released on 2007 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Geological Society has much to be proud of in its two hundred years of history. Not only is it the oldest society of its kind in the world, but it has also seen many of the important developments in the science played out within its premises. Gordon Herries Davies has expertly and entertainingly laid out this narrative for us, steering a skilful course between the necessary facts and the anecdotes that bring these facts alive. Institutional histories can be dull affairs - a litany of minutes and memoranda - but this history suffers from no such problem. This book will appeal to the historian of science, geoscientists in all branches of the subject and anyone with an interest in the development of scientific ideas in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
