It appeared he owed the gentleman 1300 florins, and had wished to abscond, but was luckily overtaken before the departure of the boat. This affair was hardly concluded when the bell rang, the wheels began to revolve, and too soon, alas, my dear ones were out of sight!I had but few fellow-passengers. The weather was indeed fine and mild; but the season was not far enough advanced to lure travellers into the wide world, excepting men of business, and those who had cosmopolitan ideas, like myself. Most of those on board were going only to Presburg, or at farthest to Pesth. The captain having mentioned that a woman was on board who intended travelling to Constantinople, I was immediately surrounded by curious gazers. A gentleman who was bound to the same port stepped forward, and offered his services in case I should ever stand in need of them; he afterwards frequently took me under his protection. The fine mild weather changed to cold and wind as we got fairly out into the great Danube. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Visit to the Holy Land, Egypt, and Italy For two centimes the princes and nations of the West were accustomed to wander towards the land of the morning. In vain was the noblest blood poured forth in streams in the effort to wrest the country of our heavenly Teacher from the grasp of the infidel; and though the Christian Europe of the present day forbears to renew a struggle which, considering the strength that has been gradually increasing for the last six hundred years, might prove an easy one, we cannot wonder that millions of the votaries of Christianity should cherish an earnest longing to wander in the paths the Redeemer has trod, and to view with their own eyes the traces of the Saviour's progress from the cradle to the grave. In the generality of cases, however, the hardships, dangers, and difficulties of such a journey were sufficient to overthrow the bravest resolution; and thus the wishes of the majority remained unfulfilled. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Journey to Egypt and the Holy Land, in 1869-1870IN offering to the public a volume of travels extend ing over countries often visited and described, a few words of explanation may be necessary. For it may be asked, Why publish such a book Our answer is, To meet the wishes of numerous friends, and also to contribute something to the knowledge of the sacred and classical lands within a compass that may be easily read; perhaps moved too by something of the spirit of Juvenal, Shall I be forever 3. Hearer only P* I had for years cherished an intense desire to visit Europe, and especially Palestine, consecrated by the presence and labors of the Prophets, of Christ, and of his Apostles. Without visiting Europe and the Orient, I felt that my education was incomplete, - that there was a vacuum that must be filled up.Through the kindness of the Hon. J. A. J. Cres well, postmaster-general, I procured letters from the Hon. Secretary of State to the consul-general of Egypt, the Consul of Jerusalem, and our Minister at Constantinople Hon. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Notes of Travel, in Europe, Egypt, and the Holy Land: Including a Visit to the City of Constantinople, in 1841 and 1842The object which the author of these Notes had in view, in his late tour, was merely the gratification of his'own curiosity. He had no intention of publishing any account of his obser vations, and hence, during his travels he kept very brief notes of the various countries and places visited, the objects of curiosity which attracted his attention, and the every-day scenes and occurrences of his journey. But after his return home, ' the frequent solicitations and earnest entreaties of numerous friends, induced him to prepare his Notes for the press. He has necessarily confined himself in these Notes to very brief sketches, without attempting any detailed de scription. He has carefully avoided all superfluous matter and common-place reflections; presenting to the reader plain facts, in preference to gaudy embellishments, and abstract, verbose and useless observations, which would only increase the size of his boom - Without imparting any intrinsic value to the work. In giving minute desor1ptions of some few objects of great interest, he has occasionally availed himself of some.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
