Book excerpt: This pictorial guide is essentially an introduction to Southeast Asia through pictures and is in no way aiming to be a true guide. A plethora of guidebooks can fill in those details. These pages aim to bring together our photographic collection from 1974 to the present, providing inspiration to would-be explorers and inquisitive armchair travellers. Across Southeast Asia the people are as welcoming, charming and helpful as any in the world. Southeast Asia is more diverse than might first be observed from an atlas. There are no vast deserts, but there are mountain regions, lush fertile plains, fabulous beaches and extensive tropical rainforests. Previously known as Indochina, much of Southeast Asia has become a top destination for travellers and visitors, and with good reason. Since the end of the Vietnam War, the region has been safe, prosperous and inviting for tourists. Vietnam is now easy to visit and has a host of varied and amazing sights. Myanmar (Burma) has a wealth of superb historic sites that include Mandalay and Pagan (Bagan). Thailand has long been popular, originally with hippies and then travellers. These days mass tourism has moved in. After the remnants of the Khmer Rouge had been eliminated In Cambodia in the early 1990s, visits to the fabulous remains of Angkor Wat increased dramatically - it's sensational. Laos, once the sleepy partner in the region, has become a 'must see' country, with tranquil hills, colourful temples, surprising historic remains and friendly people. Further south, Malaysia has developed a great tourist industry and Singapore remains a dynamic hub. Indonesia is so vast that few get beyond Bali, Java, Sumatra and maybe Lombok. Its sights are varied, with mosques, temples, animistic villages and tropical rainforest. East Timor sits at the eastern edge of the Indonesian archipelago on the route to Australia. This book is divided into countries, but there is an overlap of the traditions, culture and of new development. Some of the images date back to the 1970s, an era of great adventure to the most recent years. Southeast Asia is magical; a place to inspire and to enjoy.

Book Southeast Asia Divided

Download or read book Southeast Asia Divided written by Donald E Weatherbee and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-08-21 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The central problem of international politics in Southeast Asia since December 1978 has been the Vietnamese armed presence in Kampuchea. The noncommunist nations of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) have insisted that Vietnam withdraw from Kampuchea; the Vietnamese, perceiving a threat from the PRC and an ASEAN-sponsored Khmer resistance, maintain that the situation is irreversible. The contributors discuss the conflict from the point of view of all parties involved (ASEAN, Vietnam, the PRC, the USSR, and the U.S.) and assess various strategies for its resolution.

Book A Traveller s History of Southeast Asia

Download or read book A Traveller s History of Southeast Asia written by J.M. Barwise and published by Interlink Books. This book was released on 2015-06-20 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the early Christian era in Europe, Southeast Asia was known as the “Land of Gold.” It is a region blessed with a rich diversity of cultures, peoples, and scenery. A Traveller’s History of Southeast Asia is a lucid and concise introduction to the histories of the modern states of Malaysia, Indonesia, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Thailand, Singapore, Brunei, and East Timor, providing an essential guide for both tourists and the general reader. It spans the history of the region from “Java Man” some one million years ago, to the development of the high-tech, skyscraper cities of the new millennium, all the way to the present time. Following chapters on the physical environment and the earliest human history of Southeast Asia, the authors carry the reader through the classical kingdoms that produced such architectural marvels as Borobudur in Java and Angkor Wat in Cambodia. The book further explores Southeast Asia’s growing trade with the outside world from 1500 culminating in colonization by the European imperial powers in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The struggles for independence in the last century—which made the modern nations of the region—are discussed in detail, as are the dramatic and tragic events of the post-independence era such as the Vietnam War and the Cambodia genocide. The remarkable successes and failings of the region’s recent economic development are highlighted in the final chapter. Above all, A Traveller’s History of Southeast Asia shows how the region’s soul has been preserved against tremendous external pressures.
