Book The Voyage of a Shepherd Boy

Download or read book The Voyage of a Shepherd Boy written by Panagiotis N. Symbas and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2009-08-31 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the years during discussions with my family, I mentioned various events of my life to emphasize some facts of life in a historical perspective. Although my sons, during their tender ages, disregarded my comments, later on each one of them on many occasions suggested, and sometimes insisted that I should record my past. However, each time they asked I ignored their comments in order either to write another scientific paper or book, or to devote my available free time to review medical literature, or to spend some time with my family. Now that my remaining years are becoming shorter and shorter, I thought it might be the time to write my story. I will do it first, for the benefit of my children and, grandchildren, and second, for my own benefit, since reminiscing over even the most difficult events of my life is as invigorating now as it was then when I overcame so many obstacles. Also, there are many beautiful and happy memories that I want my wife and my sons to understand, as well as how the struggles of life made me the man that I am. Unfortunately, I have not kept a diary and as a result whatever I write is only from my own recollections. Thus, my biography is subject to the limitations of my memory. However, since my memory on medical subjects and my surgical dexterity as yet have not failed me, as is evident by the fact that Emory School of Medicine is still allowing me to teach and practice, I am confident that the events that I am about to describe are fairly accurate. This text encompasses some of the events, which had a great impact in my life. My wish is that it might convince my children, grandchildren and anyone else who might read it that their dreams, with hard work and determination, are realizable no matter how unrealistic they might seem. So, as Benjamin Franklin wrote, “I shall indulge the inclination so natural in old men, to be talking of themselves and their own past actions, and I shall indulge it without being troublesome to others who thro’ respect to age might think themselves oblig’d to give me a hearing, since this may be read or not as anyone pleases.”

Download or read book A Shepherd Boy and the Bethlehem Star written by Victor Ammann and published by Tate Publishing. This book was released on 2010-06 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fifteen-year-old Dyrus lives with his parents and grandparents in the Persian Empire during the time of Christ's birth, circa 4 BC. He's a shepherd boy, and his father's only dream is for his son to follow in his footsteps. Unfortunately, Dyrus has other dreams. Even while doing his chores as a shepherd, Dyrus's thoughts often turn heavenward. He's impressed with the sky and full of questions about the world around him. But while on a wolf hunt with his father one night, he spots a special star that he's never seen before. Unable to convince his parents of the star's importance, Dyrus becomes frustrated. Until one of the king's wise men and a caravan of soldiers come to camp in the valley where Dyrus lives. They've come to view the star from the mountain near Dyrus's home. Despite his father's insistence that he shouldn't bother the wise man, Dyrus peppers him with questions about the star. Before he knows it Dyrus is caught up in a search to find the meaning of the star and his life is changed forever. Every child knows the nativity story, but what few know is the story behind the wise men. What motivated the wise men to form a caravan and travel hundreds of miles to Jerusalem with only the star as their guide? New author Victor Ammann brings a new twist to provide an answer to these questions in A Shepherd Boy and the Bethlehem Star.

Book David the Shepherd Boy

Book excerpt: Up amongst the hills, perched like the nest of a bird on one of the long low ridges, lies the little town of Bethlehem. It was but a small town at the time this story begins, and there was nothing about it to make it at all famous. It lay out of the beaten track, and any one wanting to visit it must needs climb the long winding road that led from the plain beneath, through olive groves and sheepfields, up to the city gate—a steep, difficult road, leading nowhere but to the little town itself. It was in these fields on the slope of the hills that David, the shepherd boy of Bethlehem, spent his days watching his father's flocks. That father, whose name was Jesse, was one of the chief men of the town, and David was the youngest of all his sons.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book “A Visit to Nicaea” is a search for truths and untruths in the Bible. Originally written by unknown Jewish scribes in the Hebrew and Greek languages, the Bible is the only source for many ancient and religious events. Nicaea was a small town in the 4th century AD, located near the Turkish city of İznik about 80 miles SE of Constantinople, and was the site where religious leaders convened in 325 CE to begin the process of creating the first Christian Bible. The Bible was finally canonized in 419 AD and Christianity was declared to be the official religion of the empire. Christianity at that time was only one of many religions that existed in the ancient world. Unfortunately, over time, the early Bible would receive numerous changes and eventually morph into many versions, resulting in a host of many beliefs and practices. This book begins with a review and discussion of recent scientific discoveries about early earth and primitive life as compared to what is written in the Revised Standard Version of the Bible, and then provides a summary of all the chapters of the Bible. It tries to provide an understanding of the seemingly unswerving faith that many religious practitioners have in the infallibility and power in the Bible, even though it has been shown to be seriously flawed. This book also presents the results of numerous biblical experts throughout the world who have reviewed and commented on the validity of many ancient writings, including a fascinating in-depth look into the Bible.
