Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the entrance of The Field Museum’s Cyrus Tang Hall of China, two Chinese stone guardian lions stand tall, gazing down intently at approaching visitors. One lion’s paw rests upon a decorated ball symbolizing power, while the other lion cradles a cub. Traditionally believed to possess attributes of strength and protection, statues such as these once stood guard outside imperial buildings, temples, and wealthy homes in China. Now, centuries later, they guard this incredible permanent exhibition. China’s long history is one of the richest and most complex in the known world, and the Cyrus Tang Hall of China offers visitors a wonderful, comprehensive survey of it through some 350 artifacts on display, spanning from the Paleolithic period to present day. Now, with China: Visions through the Ages, anyone can experience the marvels of this exhibition through the book’s beautifully designed and detailed pages. Readers will gain deeper insight into The Field Museum’s important East Asian collections, the exhibition development process, and research on key aspects of China’s fascinating history. This companion book, edited by the exhibition’s own curatorial team, takes readers even deeper into the wonders of the Cyrus Tang Hall of China and enables them to study more closely the objects and themes featured in the show. Mirroring the exhibition’s layout of five galleries, the volume is divided into five sections. The first section focuses on the Paleolithic and Neolithic periods; the second, the Bronze Age, the first dynasties, and early writing; the third, the imperial system and power; the fourth, religion and performance; and the fifth, interregional trade and the Silk Routes. Each section also includes highlights containing brief stories on objects or themes in the hall, such as the famous Lanting Xu rubbing. With chapters from a diverse set of international authors providing greater context and historical background, China: Visions through the Ages is a richly illustrated volume that allows visitors, curious readers, and China scholars alike a chance to have an enduring exchange with the objects featured in the exhibition and with their multifaceted histories.

Book Vision and Certitude in the Age of Ockham

Download or read book Vision and Certitude in the Age of Ockham written by Katherine Tachau and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2022-07-11 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When William of Ockham lectured on Lombard’s Sentences in 1317-1319, he articulated a new theory of knowledge. Its reception by fourteenth-century scholars was, however, largely negative, for it conflicted with technical accounts of vision and with their interprations of Duns Scotus. This study begins with Roger Bacon, a major source for later scholastics’ efforts to tie a complex of semantic and optical explanations together into an account of concept formation, truth and the acquisition of certitude. After considering the challenges of Peter Olivi and Henry of Ghent, Part I concludes with a discussion of Scotus’s epistemology. Part II explores the alternative theories of Peter Aureol and William of Ockham. Part III traces the impact of Scotus, and then of Aureol, on Oxford thought in the years of Ockham’s early audience, culminating with the views of Adam Wodeham. Part IV concerns Aureol’s intellectual legacy at Paris, the introduction of Wodeham’s thought there, and Autrecourt’s controversies.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Vision of the Ages: An Epic Poem There is only one true gospel - the gospel of Jesus Christ. All others are counterfeit. During the course of time, this gospel received various shades of interpretation. To show the fallacy of these and to state the correct one, consistent with Revelation, is the duty of this volume. That the word gospel means "good news of great joy" no one of common intelligence will dispute. But to whom, according to present day theology, is it good news? Only to a few - the little flock. The rest of the world, is left in judgment to eternal torture. The theory of conscious suffering after death, seems to be so tenaciously held by many professing Christians, that it blots out of their minds the beauty of Gods character and the simplicity of his plan for the worlds redemption. The true gospel is incompatible with the doctrine of eternal torment. Is God mocking us? Has he proclaimed to the world good news of great joy, but instead is sending men to a place of torment to satisfy his fierce wrath and anger? O what a devilish thought! How men can entertain it and call themselves humane beings, is inconceivable. What we need above all else to-day, is a diligent search for truth, regardless of its cost. How can we get it? Only thro Revelation. Christ said: "Thy Word is truth." But what is that Word? The science and the only true science which solves the problem of redemption. Truth then, being Gods Word, is science. When we desire to study the divine science, we must lay aside all preconceived ideas and theological traditions, and approach in the spirit of humility for the ground upon which we are standing is holy and cannot be profaned by man-made theories.
