Book Builders of the Vision

Download or read book Builders of the Vision written by Daniel Cardoso Llach and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-06-05 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Builders of the Vision traces the intellectual history and contemporary practices of Computer-Aided Design (CAD) and Numerical Control since the years following World War II until today. Drawing from primary archival and ethnographic sources, it identifies and documents the crucial ideas shaping digital design technologies since the first numerical control and CAD systems were developed under US Air Force research contracts at MIT between 1949 and 1970: the cybernetic theorization of design as a human-machine endeavor; the vision of computers as "perfect slaves" taking care of the drudgery of physical labor; the techno-social utopias of computers as vehicles of democracy and social change; the entrepreneurial urge towards design and construction integration; and the managerial ideologies enabling today’s transnational geographies of practice. Examining the contrasting, and often conflicting, sensibilities that converge into CAD and BIM discourses - globalism, utopianism, entrepreneurialism, and architects’ desires for aesthetic liberation - Builders of the Vision shows that software systems and numerically controlled machines are not merely "instruments," or "tools," but rather versatile metaphors reconfiguring conceptions of design, materiality, work, and what it means to be creative. Crucially, by revealing software systems as socio-technical infrastructures that mediate the production of our built environments, author Daniel Cardoso Llach builds a strong case for the fields of architecture, media, and science and technology studies to critically engage with both the politics and the poetics of technology in design. Builders of the Vision will be essential reading for scholars and practitioners across disciplines interested in the increasingly complex socio-technical systems that go into imagining and building of our artifacts, buildings, and cities.

Book Reverse Design

Download or read book Reverse Design written by Ana Cristina Broega and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2018-09-25 with total page 717 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The collaboration between the Textile Department of the University of Minho and the Brazilian Association of Studies and Research (ABEPEM) has led to an international platform for the exchange of research in the field of Fashion and Design: CIMODE. This platform is designed as a biennial congress that takes place in different European and Latin American countries with the co-organization of another university in each location. The current edition was jointly organized by the University of Minho and the Centro Superior de Diseño de Moda (CSDMM) - Universidad Politécnica de Madrid. CIMODE's mission is to explore fashion and design from a social, cultural, psychological and communication perspective, and to bring together different approaches and perceptions of practice, education and the culture of design and fashion. Through an interdisciplinary dialogue and intercultural perspective, CIMODE wants to generate and present new scenarios about the present and future of fashion and design. ‘DISEÑO AL REVÉS’ (‘BACKWARD DESIGN’) was the central theme of the 4th CIMODE (Madrid, Spain, 21-23 May 2018), which produced a highly topical and relevant number of academic publications presented in this book.

Book excerpt: The second half of the twentieth century has seen British artists, architects, and designers assuming a central role on the world stage. Starting in the years of reconstruction after the war, the young began to challenge accepted artistic values, looking at popular culture for their inspiration; the iconoclasm of the Pop movement has continued to be one of the most vital ingredients of the British art scene. In the year-by-year record that this book provides, the work of newcomers making their first impact is seen alongside that of outstanding artists in their maturity, with connections and contradictions across the entire visual scene-from architecture, interior design, furniture, and the decorative arts to painting, sculpture, and graphic art.

Book excerpt: “Expertly curated and styled rooms . . . The fifteen standout projects featured . . . are a testament to Nahem’s longstanding excellence and ingenuity.” —Vanity Fair Foreword by Robert Downey Jr. Over thirty years, Joe Nahem of Fox-Nahem has built a reputation for creating classic, contemporary, bespoke, and highly creative interior designs. The first book on his career, Fox-Nahem presents his most luxurious, exuberant, and refined interiors that showcase his own personal vision of modernism. Featuring fifteen projects, the accompanying essays detail Nahem’s design process, specifically his ability to function as much as a curator as designer, bringing together strong objects of quality and rarity in harmonious ensembles. Nahem’s interiors are unique because he designs many of the finishes, textiles, and furnishings that establish the look and feel of a room. He calls on a stable of artisans and craftspeople, including woodworkers, metal workers, and weavers, who assist him in creating one-of-a-kind environments for clients who demand something that no one else has. With more than 250 photographs, Fox-Nahem celebrates the work of a designer who seamlessly adapts his style to suit the context and fit his clients’ highly refined and original tastes.

Each voyage is represented by exquisite photographs paired with personal, often humorous travel narratives. The author is a keen observer, captivated especially by individual forms of expression: the colors and patterns of clothing, the forms and features of architecture. Once home, Wolf incorporates - both subtly and not so subtly - the influence of his travels into his refined interior spaces in striking color combinations (the pinks and fuchsias and lavenders of Myanmar); skillful assemblages of artifacts (Ethiopian horn cups and chieftain's chairs); and graceful formal compositions (the symmetry of a Syrian garden court)."--BOOK JACKET.
