Book Vision And Authority

Download or read book Vision And Authority written by John Oman and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-19 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Vision And;;; Authority: Or the Throne of St. Peter In commencing this work I had no thought beyond the more practical issues of the present ecclesiastical situation. It has grown to be an inquiry into the foundations on which all Churches rest. This has followed from the conviction that the chief causes of division are the prejudice which dislikes such inquiry and the indifference which shuns it. Nothing short of a return to first principles, it appears to the writer, affords hope of a solution which shall fail neither in charity nor in earnestness. In attempting this task, I have not always succeeded in avoiding an abstract statement of abstract questions, and, in particular the first three chapters may prove a stumbling-block to some readers. The second title was originally the first. As it now rather indicates the starting point than the goal, the order has been reversed. For retaining it in that position there is more reason than mere obstinate adherence to what has once been written. Book Come Let Us Reason Together

Download or read book Come Let Us Reason Together written by Fleur S. Houston and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2024-01-22 with total page 393 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Oman (1860-1939) was one of the most original and profound theologian-philosophers of his generation. Drawing on previously unpublished archival sources, Houston traces the influences on Oman's Orkney childhood and his student days in Edinburgh University and the Divinity Hall of the United Presbyterian Church. She reviews Oman's subsequent publications during his ministry in Alnwick, and his influential career as professor of systematic theology and college principal at Westminster College, Cambridge. Houston describes the extent to which Oman's view of the world was challenged and affirmed by his experience of the First World War. Oman's theological and religious perspectives, summarized as "reverence, freedom, and sincerity," are rooted in the concerns of daily life. Oman's experiences and reflections are sure to stimulate, challenge, and inspire readers today as much as they did in his own time.

Book Collected Works of George Grant

Download or read book Collected Works of George Grant written by George P. Grant and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2000-12-15 with total page 552 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than a decade after his death, George Grant continues to stimulate, challenge, and inspire. During his lifetime he influenced a broad cross-section of Canadians, urging them to think more deeply about matters of social justice and individual responsibility. He wrote on subjects as diverse as technology, abortion, Canadian politics and nationalism, and the war in Vietnam, and was claimed equally by rightist and leftist causes. Grant's legacy includes six books and more than two hundred articles, as well as numerous broadcast transcripts, extensive correspondence, and a wealth of unpublished lectures, essays, and notes. In this projected eight-volume series, Grant's published and unpublished writings, including his complete correspondence, will be brought together for the first time. The texts are annotated, and each volume includes an introduction to the period that it covers. The series will not only make it possible to see the whole pattern of Grant's thought, but will also invite a reconsideration of the nature and importance of his work. Volume I covers Grant's intellectual development through his student years. Included are his early reviews, a brief journal written as he recovered from tuberculosis in 1942, and his earliest social and political writings about Canadian and international affairs. The most important of Grant's formative years were those spent at Oxford after the war, culminating in the writing of his DPhil thesis on the Scottish philosopher John Oman. In this dissertation, published here in full, we see the main themes of Grant's thought worked out for the first time.

Book The Understanding of Christian Faith

Download or read book The Understanding of Christian Faith written by Schubert M. Ogden and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2010-04-01 with total page 181 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As an introduction to Christian systematic theology, this volume treats all the main theological topics-from God to last things-seeking to explicate critically the understanding of them implicit in Christian faith itself in terms at once appropriate to Jesus Christ and credible to human existence. Its criteria, accordingly, are the ultimate criteria of on the one hand, specifically Christian experience of Jesus as expressed by the apostolic witness, and on the other hand, generically human experience of existence as expressed by a sound philosophy. And, as befits an introduction, it employs these same criteria to clarify the process of actually doing Christian systematic theology. Thus it begins by explaining both what such a theology has to do and how it is to do it, and ends by considering what it means to do theology as a Christian calling, particularly as a professional theologian.
