Even Rick assumes she has some sexual experience under her belt despite her insistence on waiting to have sex until she's ready, and even tells her that he wouldn't want to waste his time teaching a rookie how to succeed in both business and pleasure. But Lucas is different. Lucas offers to educate her in all areas of her life that need experience. Now, Avery must decide if she takes a chance on Lucas and his educational offer, despite the fact that it's still technically cheating. The only rule: feelings can't get in the way. Book excerpt: Mrs Dalloway, Virginia Woolf's fourth novel, offers the reader an impression of a single June day in London in 1923. Clarissa Dalloway, the wife of a Conservative member of parliament, is preparing to give an evening party, while the shell-shocked Septimus Warren Smith hears the birds in Regent's Park chattering in Greek. There seems to be nothing, except perhaps London, to link Clarissa and Septimus. She is middle-aged and prosperous, with a sheltered happy life behind her; Smith is young, poor, and driven to hatred of himself and the whole human race. Yet both share a terror of existence, and sense the pull of death. The world of Mrs Dalloway is evoked in Woolf's famous stream of consciousness style, in a lyrical and haunting language which has made this, from its publication in 1925, one of her most popular novels.

Book excerpt: A groundbreaking look at one of the great song composers of the late Romantic period In the virtual cottage industry of works on fin de siècle Vienna, Hugo Wolf (1860–1903) has been somewhat neglected, perhaps because he was the master of a small genre—the late Romantic lied—and never truly made his mark in the larger forms that command greater public attention. But in the realm of song, he is among the greatest inheritors of Schubert and Schumann, one who was both a traditionalist and a modernist. When the Viennese critic Eduard Hanslick disapprovingly dubbed Wolf “the Richard Wagner of the lied,” he was paying oblique homage to Wolf’s genius as a song composer in the most modern manner. In this book, Susan Youens examines five aspects of Wolf’s compositional art, each exemplifying a different synthesis of traditionalism and modernity and spanning his entire, tragically brief creative life, from his first efforts to his lapse into insanity in 1897. She discusses Wolf’s youthful imitations of Schumann, his genius for comic songs of a kind unlike any of his predecessors, his part in the ballad revival of the late nineteenth century, Wolf in relation to his contemporaries, and his pursuit of operatic fame. Youens looks as closely at the poetic texts as she does the music and includes numerous previously unpublished sketches and fragments, examples from songs now long out of print and difficult to obtain, and citations from Wolf’s vivid letters and other sources of the period.

Book The Wise Virgins

Download or read book The Wise Virgins written by Leonard Woolf and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2007-01-01 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new edition of Leonard Woolf's satirical second novel, which offers an intriguing group portrait of Leonard and Virginia Woolf and other members of the Bloomsbury Group The Wise Virgins (1914), Leonard Woolf's second novel, was published two years after the author's marriage to Virginia Stephen--and begun during their honeymoon. The autobiographical elements of the book are well documented. Its publication caused acute distress to Woolf's family. Leonard's sister, Bella, urged him to bury the novel, while his mother was shocked and mortified by unflattering portraits of herself and her neighbors. Two weeks after reading the novel, Virginia Woolf suffered the worst of her many breakdowns. As aroman à clef the novel holds considerable interest for its picture of Leonard and Virginia's courtship, as well as its sketches of Vanessa Stephen and Clive Bell. (Virginia would later retell the story, from a much different perspective, in Night and Day.) But the novel offers the contemporary reader other rewards. It remains a witty, engaging satire about English society just before World War I and its conventions and prejudices. In Harry Davis, Woolf created a memorable Jewish antihero who rails against society's conventions but tragically finds himself unable to escape them. Award-winning biographer Victoria Glendinning contributes a foreword to this new paperback edition.

Book excerpt: A thriller in a western setting which embraces every known cliché of the genre, dips them in cynicism, and hurls them right back at you. 1870's Wyoming, and the town of Limon is booming. Mining and cattle; and now the railroad, desperate for the revenue. With their grading crews slamming down the track and the construction gangs throwing up the new railhead and stockyards, the place is just bursting at the seams. Which is how the Great and the Greedy like it - up to a point. Now they plan to hold on to what they've got; protect it from the next wave of scavengers who might be even more desperate and ruthless than they were. So it's time to get civilised before things get out of hand and the whole lot comes tumbling down. They've tried electing Peace Officers. None could stand the heat. They've tried the army. The town couldn't stand their incompetence. Now they're going to try Feltman. Feltman makes problems disappear. He knows how to kill - he's good at it. But this is no strutting gunman. He's ruthless, yes, and efficient, but personable, likeable even -and he works for them. So why do the good people of Limon feel so uneasy when Feltman appears to be doing exactly what they're paying him to do? Why do they feel like they're being devoured?

Book excerpt: Since antiquity, the she-wolf has served as the potent symbol of Rome. For more than two thousand years, the legendary animal that rescued Romulus and Remus has been the subject of historical and political accounts, literary treatments in poetry and prose, and visual representations in every medium. In She-Wolf: The Story of a Roman Icon, Cristina Mazzoni examines the evolution of the she-wolf as a symbol in western history, art, and literature, from antiquity to contemporary times. Used, for example, as an icon of Roman imperial power, papal authority, and the distance between the present and the past, the she-wolf has also served as an allegory for greed, good politics, excessive female sexuality, and, most recently, modern, multi-cultural Rome. Mazzoni engagingly analyzes the various role guises of the she-wolf over time in the first comprehensive study in any language on this subject.

Book excerpt: In Virginia Woolf's masterpiece The Years, we are invited on a journey through the labyrinths of time and the ever-changing landscapes of human existence. With her unique and experimental prose, Woolf creates a poignant portrayal of life's passage, its fleeting moments, and the eternal quest for meaning and understanding. Through a kaleidoscopic narrative style and a stream of consciousness, the author weaves together the story of multiple generations of a family, from late 19th-century England to the modern 20th century. On this journey, we witness the characters' love, sorrow, joy, and doubt, while Woolf skillfully explores themes of time, identity, and the role of women in society. The Years is a deeply philosophical and poetic novel that envelops the reader with its lyrical beauty and thought-provoking reflections. With her sharp observations and pioneering style, Virginia Woolf has crafted a masterpiece that continues to fascinate and challenge generations of readers. As a thinker, with essays like A Room of One’s Own [1929], Woolf has influenced the women’s movement in many countries.

Book Virginia Woolf

Book excerpt: In this amazing odyssey of two black women from the 1930s to the present, all the storytelling gifts of a brilliant Pulitzer Prize -- winning writer are abundantly displayed. When we first meet Baby, she's one of six black children abandoned by their parents during the Depression. They are roadwalkers -- homeless wanderers across the rural South, leading a dangerous, almost enchanted life. One by one they are saved, lost, or simply disappear, until only Baby and a brother are left, living off the land -- a primitive gypsy existence hauntingly described. Finally Baby is captured -- almost like a wild animal -- by the white farm manager of an old plantation where the children have been hiding. He sends her to an orphanage in New Orleans, where she guards the rich mythic content of her wandering against the invasive kindness of the nuns by covering the walls with strange, brilliant drawings of flowers and animals. We next see Baby decades later, through the eyes of her daughter, Nanda, who at thirty-six looks back at her own childhood. Baby and Nanda move into the middle class through Baby's eccentrically successful career -- first as a seamstress, then as a designer of dresses for rich white women. Raised a princess in the protective circle of Baby's magic, Nanda in her teens is suddenly catapulted into the white world when she is sent off to integrate a white Catholic girls' school in the East. Seeing herself as her mother saw herself -- alone in an alien place, Nanda finds an entirely different means of survival. A rich and wonderfully fresh -- often astonishing -- evocation of the black experience in the South, seen through the lives of two fascinating women.

Book excerpt: First published in 1951, Man into Wolf attempts to suggest the possibility of historical, or rather prehistorical, evolutionist derivation of all crimes of violence, from the individual attack on life known as murder or manslaughter to the collective organized killing which we call war. The author has tried to show that the evidence from prehistory can be made intelligible on the theory of Jung’s archetypes surviving in the collective conscience and revealing themselves all over the world in legends, myths and rites. He discusses, in the notes on the lecture, every possible aspect of the subject ranging from the perverseness of the Marquis de Sade to the Grecian Bacchantes, and from the Green Men and the agricultural ceremonies to a case study of John George Haigh. This book will be of interest to students of anthropology, gender studies, and psychology.
