Book excerpt: Publius Vergilius Maro (70-19 B.C.), known in English as Virgil, was perhaps the single greatest poet of the Roman empire—a friend to the emperor Augustus and the beneficiary of wealthy and powerful patrons. Most famous for his epic of the founding of Rome, the Aeneid, he wrote two other collections of poems: the Georgics and the Bucolics, or Eclogues. The Eclogues were Virgil's first published poems. Ancient sources say that he spent three years composing and revising them at about the age of thirty. Though these poems begin a sequence that continues with the Georgics and culminates in the Aeneid, they are no less elegant in style or less profound in insight than the later, more extensive works. These intricate and highly polished variations on the idea of the pastoral poem, as practiced by earlier Greek poets, mix political, social, historical, artistic, and moral commentary in musical Latin that exerted a profound influence on subsequent Western poetry. Book excerpt: Among the many recent studies of the Bucolics, none has dealt systematically with the evidence, newly broached by modern scholarship, that Virgil's book may be a single unified composition in which the ten eclogues, rather than separate poems gathered and arranged, are parts worked out expressly for their places and differentiated functions in the whole. The present study, emphasizing the need for considered method, approaches the book's unity first in terms of theme. It shows that Virgil deployed themes in three registers--a bucolic, a georgic, and a civic-heroic--that develop and systematically vary through all the eclogues in the order of the book. A thematic system thus emerges in the book as a whole. It may share the traditional functions of rhetoric and music at the level of performance; but it is shown also to articulate, on reflective reading, an ambitious design in poetics. Through it, Virgil reckons with the entire tradition of epos, which he recasts from two modes into three (Hesiodic/Homeric: bucolic/Hesiodic/Homeric). He thus establishes the tripartite frame for his life's work, with its ultimate emulation of Homer. In the process, through the successive ecolgues, he also gradually transforms the bucolic mode from Sicilian (Theocritean) to Arcadian. This he conceives as a return to the source, hence a new begining that outdoes Theocritus. -- Back cover.

It argues that the 'Eclogues' find there both a sequence of analogies for their own poetic processes and a map upon which can be located other landmarks in Greco-Roman literature. Unlike previous studies of this kind, "Bucolic Ecology" does not attribute to Virgil a predominantly Romantic conception of nature and its relationship to poetry, but by adopting such differing approaches to the physical world as astronomy, geography, topography, landscape and ecology, it offers an account of the Eclogues that emphasises their range and complexity and reaffirms their innovation and audacity.

Taking as his generic model the Greek Bucolica ("on care of cattle", so named from the poetry's rustic subjects) by Theocritus, Virgil created a Roman version partly by offering a dramatic and mythic interpretation of revolutionary change at Rome in the turbulent period between roughly 44 and 38 BC. Virgil introduced political clamor largely absent from Theocritus' poems, called idylls ("little scenes" or "vignettes"), even though erotic turbulence disturbs the "idyllic" landscapes of Theocritus. Virgil's book contains ten pieces, each called not an idyll but an eclogue ("draft" or "selection" or "reckoning"), populated by and large with herdsmen imagined conversing and performing amoebaean singing in largely rural settings, whether suffering or embracing revolutionary change or happy or unhappy love. Performed with great success on the Roman stage, they feature a mix of visionary politics and eroticism that made Virgil a celebrity, legendary in his own lifetime.
