Sex differences are variations attributable to individual reproductive organs and the XX or XY chromosomal complement. Gender differences are variations that result from biological sex as well as individual self-representation which include psychological, behavioural, and social consequences of an individual’s perceived gender. Gender is still a neglected field in psychopathology, and gender differences is often incorrectly used as a synonym of sex differences. A reconsideration of the definition of gender, as the term that subsumes masculinity and femininity, could shed some light on this misperception and could have an effect in the study of health and disease. This second edition of Psychopathology clarifies the anthropological, cultural and social aspects of gender and their impact on mental health disorders. It focuses on gender perspective as a paradigm not only in psychopathology but also in mental health disorders. As such it promotes open mindedness in the definition and perception of symptoms, as well as assumptions about those symptoms, and raises awareness of mental health.

Para llevar a cabo este estudio se utilizó un método cualitativo. Los participantes del estudio fueron un total de cinco profesionales de la salud, de ambos géneros que cumplieron con los criterios de inclusión establecidos por la investigadora. Se desarrolló una guía de preguntas abiertas a seguir durante la entrevista semi-estructurada grabada. El guía de preguntas consistió de un total de 22 preguntas dividas en (3) partes (Apéndice B). Se le leyó y se le entregó una hoja de consentimiento y confidencialidad (Apéndice A). A través de estas cinco entrevistas, se logró obtener la percepción y experiencia de estos profesionales de la salud que hayan trabajando e interviniendo con personas envejecidas sobrevivientes de maltrato. Se identificó la teoría de la actividad y satisfacción de la vida como el marco de referencia. Los resultados obtenidos demuestran la gran necesidad que existe para sensibilizarnos y aumentar la educación del proceso de envejecimiento para poder identificar e intervenir en casos de maltrato de nuestra población envejecida. He llegado a la conclusión, que es urgente entender el proceso del envejecimiento, las necesidades y el valor de esta etapa de la vida. Dediquemos nuestro tiempo y esfuerzo para compartir nuestra atención, cariño y afecto con nuestros envejecidos que tanto ellos también dieron y aportaron en nuestra crianza y desarrollo.

Intimate partner violence has received significant attention in recent years, animating political debate, policy and law reform as well as scholarly attention. In bringing together a range of international experts, this edited collection challenges status quo understandings of risk and questions how we can reposition the risk of IPV, and particularly the risk of IPH, as a critical site of global and national security. It brings together contributions from a range of disciplines and international jurisdictions, including from Australia and New Zealand, United Kingdom, Europe, United States, North America, Brazil and South Africa. The contributions here urge us to think about perpetrators in more nuanced and sophisticated ways with chapters pointing to the structural and social factors that facilitate and sustain violence against women and IPV. Contributors point out that states not only exacerbate the structural conditions producing the risks of violence, but directly coerce and control women as both citizens and non-citizens. States too should be understood as collaborators and facilitators of intimate partner violence. Effective action against intimate partner violence requires sustained responses at the global, state and local levels to end gender inequality. Critical to this end are environmental issues, poverty and the divisions, often along ‘race’ and ethnic lines, underpinning other dimensions of social and economic inequality.

Nor did I think, when he started hurting me, that this could be intentional, since all the aggressors blame their victims. In my case, the victimization was so effective that, after each assault, I would recreate the incident to see what I had done to make my husband react in this way. This is my story, that of a battered and immigrant woman who found no way to escape or hide; A Catholic who believes in family and who fought to keep it for the good of her children.
