Book Taken by Bear in Glacier Natio

Download or read book Taken by Bear in Glacier Natio written by Kathleen SNOW and published by Lyons Press. This book was released on 2020-05 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first-person accounts in Taken by Bear in Glacier National Park provide a you-are-there perspective on human and grizzly bear encounters since the park's founding in 1910. Most of these encounters have ended peacefully, but many have not. In order to most accurately tell the stories of those involved in the more deadly incidents, Kathleen Snow went directly to the source: the National Park Service archives. With help from personnel at park headquarters, Snow has collected more than 100 years' worth of harrowing true stories that read like crime scene investigations and provide hard-learned lessons in outdoor safety. A must-read for fans of Taken by Bear in Yellowstone and the classic Bear Attacks: Their Causes and Avoidance by Stephen Herrero.

Book Flora of Glacier National Park Montana Classic Reprint

Download or read book Flora of Glacier National Park Montana Classic Reprint written by Paul C. Standley and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-10-19 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Flora of Glacier National Park, Montana Glacier National Park lies in northwestern Montana along the main range of the Rockies. It embraces an area of square miles, nearly all of which consists of masses of high mountains. On the north it adjoins British Columbia and Alberta; eastward stretch the prairies of the Blackfoot Indian Reservation, and to the west lie the mountains and heavy forests of the Flathead Valley. The Continental Divide runs along the crest of the chief mountain ridge. The drainage of the west (pacific) slope of the park is couse quently into the Columbia River, while on the east (atlantic) slope it is partly to Hudson Bay and partly to the Missouri River. From one point, Triple Divide Peak, the drainage is partly into each of the three systems. The highest peaks of the region reach an altitude of but little more than meters feet), but the elevation of the surrounding country is comparatively low (950 meters on 'the west slope and meters on the east slope), so that the mountains are quite as imposing in appearance as many of those in the southern Rockies which have a much greater elevation. Book Night of the Grizzlies

Download or read book Night of the Grizzlies written by Jack Olsen and published by Crime Rant Books. This book was released on 1969 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For more than half a century, grizzly bears roamed free in the national parks without causing a human fatality. Then in 1967, on a single August night, two campers were fatally mauled by enraged bears -- thus signaling the beginning of the end for America's greatest remaining land carnivore. Night of the Grizzlies, Olsen's brilliant account of another sad chapter in America's vanishing frontier, traces the causes of that tragic night: the rangers' careless disregard of established safety precautions and persistent warnings by seasoned campers that some of the bears were acting "funny"; the comforting belief that the great bears were not really dangerous -- would attack only when provoked. The popular sport that summer was to lure the bears with spotlights and leftover scraps -- in hopes of providing the tourists with a show, a close look at the great "teddy bears." Everyone came, some of the younger campers even making bold enough to sleep right in the path of the grizzlies' known route of arrival. This modern "bearbaiting" could have but one tragic result…

Book Wild River Pioneers 2nd Ed Adventures in the Middle Fork of the Flathead Great Bear Wilderness and Glacier Np New Updated

Download or read book Wild River Pioneers 2nd Ed Adventures in the Middle Fork of the Flathead Great Bear Wilderness and Glacier Np New Updated written by John Fraley and published by . This book was released on 2021-06 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Montana retains much of its wild character, including big, unspoiled landscapes and grizzly bears, wolves, and mountain lions. Montanans themselves can also be wild characters, prone to less than civilized adventures. Perhaps no corner of the Big Sky exemplifies this double quality more than the Middle Fork of the Flathead River drainage. From its headwaters in the Bob Marshall Wilderness to the long run along Glacier National Park’s southern boundary, the Middle Fork defines “wild and scenic.” And its human stories are equally wild and epic. In Wild River Pioneers, you’ll find true stories of outlaw shootouts, grizzly bear attacks, a murder (and a hanging), secret caves, fortunes won and lost, the Cattle Queen of Montana, a wily Josephine Doody bootlegging liquor in Glacier National Park, and an ice cream-eating pet bear. This new second edition features additional photographs and updates on many of the characters and their final resting places. Come along to the top of the Great Bear Wilderness with the ashes of Betty the Trapper. The Bootleg Lady, Josephine Doody, is now a celebrity in Glacier’s folklore; learn the fate of her homestead in Glacier. And after nearly a century, Flathead County’s first sheriff, Big Joe Gangner, finally gets the monument and headstone he deserves. Come learn about Glacier National Park and the Great Bear Wilderness and a lot more." – publisher description.
