Download or read book Iranian F 14 Tomcat Units in Combat written by Tom Cooper and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2012-11-20 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: So formidable an opponent did the Iraqi airforce consider the F-14 that during the Iran-Iraq war, they ordered their pilots not to engage F-14s and the presence of one in an area was usually enough to empty it of Iraqi aircraft. Officially losses where tiny; only one F-14 was lost in aerial combat (to a MiG-21), one to a control problem and one downed by a ground-to-air missile. This book looks at the F-14's Iranian combat history and includes first hand accounts from the pilots themselves. It will consider key engagements and the central figures involved, illustrating the realities, successes and failures of the Iranian air campaign.

Download or read book Lions of the Sky written by Francesco Chierici and published by . This book was released on 2018-12 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tiny's voice screamed over the radio, "Fox-3! Smoke in the air. Tiny's still spiked, breaking left."Tiny fired a retaliatory shot and was turning for all he was worth in a desperate, last-ditch attempt to evade the incoming Chinese missile.Slammer jerked his trigger then pressed the mic switch, "Fox-3!" The AMRAAM left his plane with a surprisingly loud scream. A moment later the sky was latticed with smoke trails as Quick and Lips followed suit. He watched their missiles travel downrange with disbelief. The Rhinos were now too close to merging to take evasive maneuvers. Any turn away at this range would just put the Flankers on their tails.Committed to a head-on pass, he pulled his throttles to idle to reduce the infrared signature from his engines and held his breath, watching for any more missiles coming his way.Five missiles - four American and one Chinese - closed in on their prey with a combined closure rate of Mach 6, or 4,000 knots. Roughly one mile per second. It would be the longest six seconds of Slammer's life.

Download or read book Topgun Days written by Dave Baranek and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2010-06-01 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dave Baranek (callsign "Bio") was one of 451 young men to receive his Wings of Gold in 1980 as a naval flight officer. Four years later, seasoned by intense training and deployments in the tense confrontations of the cold war, he became the only one of that initial group to rise to become an instructor at the navy's elite Fighter Weapons School. As a Topgun instructor, Bio was responsible for teaching the navy's and Marine Corps's best fighter pilots how to be even better. He schooled them in the classroom and then went head-to-head with them in the skies. Then, in August 1985, Bio was assigned to combine his day-to-day flight duties with participation in a Pentagon-blessed project to film action footage for a major Hollywood movie focusing on the lives, loves, heartbreaks, and triumphs of young fighter pilots: Top Gun. Bio soon found himself riding in limousines to attend gala premieres, and being singled out by giggling teenagers and awed schoolboys who recognized the name "Topgun" on his T-shirts. The book ends with his reflections on his career as a skilled naval aviator and his enduring love of flight.

Download or read book F 111 Aardvark written by John Gourley and published by Schiffer Military History. This book was released on 2021-02-28 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The General Dynamics F-111 was one of aviation history's most promising planes when it came out in the early 1960s. Despite a rocky service career, political changes in how the military acquired its weaponry, and the addition of too much new technology, the plane provided a credible frontline deterrent to NATO in the Cold War era and was used to great effect in the Vietnam War and Operation Desert Storm. Many of the challenges faced by putting the F-111--with all of its new systems--into service are now accepted as a normal outfit in modern fighter aircraft. The F-111 had a lot of bad publicity, but in the end the F-111 did its job extremely well. Although the Navy did not accept the F-111B model, the Grumman F-14 Tomcat became a success, resulting in large part from the F-111B experience and tests it did accomplish with the radar and missile systems.
