Book Notes of a Russian Sniper

  • Author : Vassili Zaitsev
  • Publisher : Frontline
  • Release : 2016-11-30
  • ISBN : 9781473892705
  • Pages : 208 pages

Download or read book Notes of a Russian Sniper written by Vassili Zaitsev and published by Frontline. This book was released on 2016-11-30 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'As a sniper, I've killed more than a few Nazis. I have a passion for observing enemy behaviour. You watch a Nazi officer come out of a bunker, acting all high and mighty, ordering his soldiers every which way, and putting on an air of authority. The officer hasn't got the slightest idea that he only has seconds to live.' Vassili Zaitsev's account of the hell that was Stalingrad is moving and harrowing. This was a battle to the death - fighting street by street, brick by brick, living like rats in a desperate struggle to survive. Here, the rules of war were discarded and a psychological war was being waged. In this environment, the sniper was king - an unseen enemy who frayed the nerves of brutalised soldiers. Zaitsev volunteered to fight at Stalingrad in 1942. His superiors recognized quickly his talent, and made him a sniper. He adapted his hunting skills to the ruins of the city, watching his prey with nerves of steel. In his first 10 days, Zaitsev killed 40 Germans. He achieved at least 225 kills and the tactics he developed are still being studied. Zaitsev was used a symbol of Russian resistance against the Nazis. His exploits, including a famous 'duel' with a Nazi sniper, remain the stuff of legend. His account is absorbing to anyone interested in World War II and seeing how one person could survive in the most extreme of conditions.

Book Hitler s Vienna

Download or read book Hitler s Vienna written by Brigitte Hamann and published by Tauris Parke Paperbacks. This book was released on 2011-02-28 with total page 496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What turned Adolf Hitler, a relatively normal and apparently unexceptional young man, into the very personification of evil? To answer this question, acclaimed historian Brigitte Hamann has turned to the critical, formative, years that the young Hitler spent in Vienna. As a failing, bitter, and desperately poor artist, Hitler experienced only the dark underbelly of Vienna, which was seething with fear, racial prejudice, anti-Semitism and conservatism. Drawing on previously untapped sources—from personal reminiscences to the records of shelters where Hitler slept—Hamann vividly recreates the dark side of fin de siècle Vienna and paints the fullest and most disturbing portrait of the young Hitler to date.

Book The New Freedom

Book excerpt: Cultural Writing. Political Science. This edition of THE NEW FREEDOM: CORPORATE CAPITALISM reproduces the entire text of Fredy Perlman's first book, self-published in 1961 in an edition of 91. The text of this edition is based on copy 7, currently in the posession of the Library of Congress. "Where there's freedom of speech and freedom of the press, there cannot be 'dangerous ideas.' There can be imaginative and unimaginative, original and trite ideas, but no 'dangerous' ones. The advocacy of public sabotage, misery and oppression for the sake of private aggrandisement and power is dangerous, but it is not an idea. In a democratic society, the man who advocates personal gain at public expense would be greeted as a lunatic, since he expresses, not reasoned conclusions, but an irrational will to dominate over and enslave other men..."--from the text.
