Book excerpt: #1 New York Times bestselling author Frederick Forsyth delivers a frighteningly possible novel of international terrorism and impending war… As the Russian people face starvation, the Politburo is faced with a hard choice: negotiate with America for food, go to war for national survival, or deal with an uprising in the motherland. Through an informant, British Agent Adam Munro learns that the situation is growing dangerously tense, with powerful forces in the USSR maneuvering for supremacy. But even as East and West conduct delicate talks, events spiral out of control and threaten to undo every step taken. The world’s largest oil tanker is hijacked by terrorists, and a Ukrainian “freedom fighter” is rescued in a bloody catastrophe on the Black Sea. From Moscow to Washington, the stakes grow ever more perilous as the mad actions of a few threaten to engulf the entire world in nuclear war—unless Munro can stop them.

Book The Ghost Studies

Download or read book The Ghost Studies written by Brandon Massullo and published by Red Wheel/Weiser. This book was released on 2017-10-09 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “A genuine attempt by someone who is a trained clinical therapist and parapsychologist to scientifically evaluate reported experiences of the paranormal.” —Magonia Review You’ve just laid down for the night when suddenly doors slam and the curtains shift. The lights begin to flicker and a white mist forms in front of you. You shut your eyes and keep muttering, “ghosts aren’t real.” But then you open your eyes and realize that “harmless” mist has shifted into the form of a man, staring intensely at you, as he floats above your bed. What causes ghostly experiences? Are ghosts real? Why do certain people report numerous ghostly encounters and others none? For centuries these questions have intrigued, puzzled, and bedeviled science, skeptics, and even believers. Based on cutting-edge research and new theories, The Ghost Studies provides insight into some of life’s greatest mysteries. This fascinating book is far more than a compilation of ghost stories. The Ghost Studies provides scientific explanations for paranormal occurrences, including: New and exciting scientific theories that explain apparitions, hauntings, and communications from the dead. The latest research on the role of energy and electricity in hauntings. The role that emotions, bioenergetics, and the environment play in supernatural phenomena. New research into why some individuals are more prone to ghostly encounters. “I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to expand their knowledge of the paranormal . . . This book is well written and opens the doors for countless areas of study and discussion and it is one that you will find yourself going back to again and again.” —Association of Paranormal Study

Book excerpt: Englishman Robert Livermore jumped ship in Southern California in 1822, yet just 15 years later became the respected owner of the 40,000-acre Las Positas land grant. Here he built his new Californio wife an adobe house in 1839. The wealth that flowed into California during the gold rush allowed Livermore to import a two-story house around the Horn, but entrepreneurs and squatters flowed in as well. Nathaniel Patterson opened the first hotel in the old Livermore adobe, frequented by miners on their way from the South Bay to the Sierra gold mines. Laddsville, a village built where the roads to Stockton and Dublin met, was also a going concern until the Central Pacific pushed over the Altamont Pass. On this line grew the town founded by William Mendenhall in 1869, named for pioneer Livermore, who had died more than a decade earlier. Soon Livermore became the valley's commercial center for hay, wheat, barley, wine grapes, and ranching.

Book Twenty Small Sailboats to Take You Anywhere

Download or read book Twenty Small Sailboats to Take You Anywhere written by John Vigor and published by . This book was released on 1999-08 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Vigor turns the spotlight on twenty seaworthy sailboats that are at home on the ocean in all weather. These are old fiberglass boats, mostly of traditional design and strong construction. All are small, from 20 feet to 32 feet overall, but all have crossed oceans, and all are cheap. Choosing the right boat to take you across an ocean or around the world can be confusing and exasperating, particularly with a tight budget. Vigor sets out to remedy that in this book. He compares the designs and handling characteristics of 20 different boats whose secondhand market prices start at about $3,000. Interviews with experienced owners (featuring valuable tips about handling each boat in heavy weather) are interspersed with line drawings of hulls, sail plans, and accommodations. Vigor has unearthed the known weaknesses of each boat and explains how to deal with them. He rates their comparative seaworthiness, their speed, and the number of people they can carry in comfort. If you have ever dreamed the dream this book can help you turn it into reality.

Book Eva Braun Hitler s Mistress

Download or read book Eva Braun Hitler s Mistress written by Nerin E. Gun and published by . This book was released on 1968 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eva Braun, daughter of a respectable German bourgeois family, was convent educated. Yet she grew up to become the mistress of Adolf Hitler and went with him to her death in the holocaust of Berlin during the waning days of World War II. The product of a happy but uneventful childhood in middle-class Munich, Eva went to work for photographer Heinrich Hoffmann after her schooling ws completed. It was at Hoffmann's that she met the rising National Socialist politician, Adolf Hitler. Though considerably older than the nubile Eva, he exerted a strong fascination over her. A stormy courtship ensued, during which Eva attempted suicide. Eventually she became mistress to the man who would soon rule Germany. From this point on, she remained Hitler's faithful and dedicated companion for seventeen years during which time her paramour was destined to shake the very foundations of western civilization. Eva Braun was Hitler's official hostess at Berchtesgaden and was present at most of the important gatherings where the fate of nations was being decided and where history was being made. When the mighty edifice of the Third Reich was collapsing in ruin under the pounding of the Allies, she joined her doomed lover in Berlin where he finally made her his wife and they perished together during the Russian assault. Eva Braun had a uniquely intimate view of Adolf Hitler and Nazi Germany, and no history of those days is complete without her. The book contains numerous photographs of Hitler and his entourage and utilizes material taken from Eva Braun's unpublished scrapbooks and letters.
