Rogal (emeritus, humanities and fine arts, Illinois Valley Community College) presents the text of the sale catalog, whose fine and thorough descriptions--apparently written by bookseller Charles Sotheran--he has annotated with historic details. (The unfortunate, squinty sans-serif typeface, however, makes the reference less of a joy to read.) Vol. 2 covers the final four sessions of the eight-session sale: Americana; ethnology; philosophy; Oriental literature; Greek and Latin; European mythology; Hebrew and Christian theology; occultism; chivalry and heraldry; poetry, drama, and music; European history and biography; and miscellaneous literature. Book Philip Sidney and the Poetics of Renaissance Cosmopolitanism

Download or read book Philip Sidney and the Poetics of Renaissance Cosmopolitanism written by Robert E. Stillman and published by Ashgate Publishing, Ltd.. This book was released on 2008 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Offering a fresh interpretation of Philip Sidney's Defence of Poesy, Robert E. Stillman's intellectually ambitious study challenges traditional scholarship by identifying the impact of his education by the followers of Philip Melanchthon-the so-called Philippists-on his poetics, piety, and politics. Sidney created the first Renaissance text to argue for poetry's pre-eminence as an autonomous form of knowledge in the public domain, and its consequent power to promote cultural reform.

Book Allegory and Epic in English Renaissance Literature

Download or read book Allegory and Epic in English Renaissance Literature written by Kenneth Borris and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2000-10-26 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Challenging conventional notions that literary allegorism declined precipitously around 1600, Kenneth Borris reassesses the Renaissance relations between allegory and heroic poetry, particularly in the major texts of Sidney, Spenser and Milton. Through wide-ranging consideration of Homeric and Virgilian reception and its influence on both continental and English literary theory, he shows that allegorical epic tended to double for and displace epic throughout the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Borris offers a fresh approach to the interaction of allegory with literary genres; focusing on epic, he further analyses the distinctive codes and conventions that constituted the generic repertoire of Renaissance allegorical epic poetry. Whereas standard literary history assumes Sidney opposes allegory, and that Milton minimises or rejects it in following Spenser, Borris's detailed readings demonstrate that Sidney and Milton are also major allegorists, and that Spenser remained so even in the latter books of The Faerie Queene. This book was first published in 2000.

Book Sir Philip Sidney and the Circulation of Manuscripts 1558 1640

Download or read book Sir Philip Sidney and the Circulation of Manuscripts 1558 1640 written by H. R. Woudhuysen and published by Clarendon Press. This book was released on 1996-05-23 with total page 541 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first modern study of the production and circulation of manuscripts during the English Renaissance. H.R. Woudhuysen examines the relationship between manuscript and print, looks at people who lived by their pens, and surveys authorial and scribal manuscripts, paying particular attention to the copying of verse, plays, and scholarly works by hand. It investigates the professional production of manuscripts for sale by scribes such as Ralph Crane and Richard Robinson. The second part of the book examines Sir Philip Sydney's works in the context of Woudhuysen's research, discussing all Sidney's important manuscripts, and seeking to assess his part in the circulation of his works and his role in the promotion of a scribal culture. A detailed examination of the manuscripts and early prints of his poems, his Arcadias, and of Astrophil and Stella shed new light on their composition, evolution, and dissemination, as well as on Sidney's friends and admirers.

Book Romance for Sale in Early Modern England

Download or read book Romance for Sale in Early Modern England written by Steve Mentz and published by Ashgate Publishing, Ltd.. This book was released on 2006 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Steve Mentz provides a comprehensive historicist and formalist account of prose romance, the most important genre of Elizabethan fiction. He explores how authors and publishers of prose fiction in late sixteenth-century England produced books that combined traditional narrative forms with a dynamic new understanding of the relationship between text and audience. Though prose fiction would not dominate English literary culture until the eighteenth century, Mentz demonstrates that the form began to invent itself as a distinct literary kind in England nearly two centuries earlier.
