Book excerpt: There has been a recent resurgence of interest in the work of Vilfredo Pareto, one of the founders of modern economics. This book reconstructs the genesis and significance of Pareto's theory of choice which is Pareto's greatest contribution to economic science and which was used by John Hicks, amongst others, to develop microeconomics. Hicks, Allen, Samuelson and others acknowledged Pareto as the father of the new ordinalist microeconomics but at the same time, portrayed him as confused and contradictory, caught between the old and new paradigms. Luigino Bruni argues that Pareto's revolution in choice theory is better understood in the context of his own philosophical framework. This framework is revealed by reconstructing his dialogues with economists (Pantaleoni) and philosophers (Vailati and Croce), and by exploring Pareto's economic theory in the light of his philosophy of science. In addition, Luigino Bruni argues that Pareto's contribution was different and more complex than Hicks's ordinalism and Samuelson's operationalism. From this analysis emerges an image of Pareto as a man whose ideas and work was only partially fulfilled. This original and sometimes unconventional book will be of great interest to economists, historians of economic thought and philosophers of the social sciences.

He contributed to the development of functionalist and systems theories of social and economic life and was a major influence on the work of talcott Parsons. He was also and advocate of empirical and experimental methods in the social sciences as well as of mathematical sociology and economics.Pareto's classic work, the Trattato di Sociologia Generale (1916), was published by his student Giulio Farina in 1920. Farina was able to rely upon Pareto for corrections and approval of the abridgement. Now, for the first time, this abridged work is available in an English translation, as the Compendium of General Sociology. Elisabeth Abbott participated in the Livingston-Bongiorno translation of the complete Trattato in the 1930s, and she has drawn upon that notable translation (now out of print) in her work on the Compendium. A substantial introduction by sociologist Joseoh Lopreato of the University of Texas provides a historical context for Pareto's work and calls attention to the main lines in his thought.

Pareto argues that "It will help if we further divide that [elite] class into two classes: a governing elite, comprising individuals who directly or indirectly play some considerable part in government, and a non- governing elite, comprising the rest." His main discussion focuses on the governing elite.
