Book The Analysis of Wonder

    Book Details:
  • Author : Predrag Cicovacki
  • Publisher : Bloomsbury Publishing USA
  • Release : 2014-01-30
  • ISBN : 1623569745
  • Pages : 185 pages

Download or read book The Analysis of Wonder written by Predrag Cicovacki and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2014-01-30 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Structured to introduce the reader into all aspects of the philosophy of Nicolai Hartmann (1882-1950), this book aims to stimulate further interest into his thought. Once considered the most studious and systematic of all the German philosophers of the twentieth-century, this prolific author has been nearly forgotten. For many years a student and an admirer of Hartmann's work, Cicovacki argues that a closer look into Hartmann's ontologically and axiologically oriented philosophy contains a promise of a vital philosophical orientation, especially with regard to our understanding of the nature, place, and role of humanity in the larger world. "The Analysis of Wonder" - Hartmann's own definition of philosophy - is an invitation to the readers to challenge their preconceived and self-interested notions of reality in order to relearn to appreciate the always changing and conflicting world, in all of its complexity, richness, and sublimity.

Book Syllable Stress and Sign

The first main theme in this volume is syllable structure, touching on phonotactics, syllabification, gemination, syllable weight, diphthongization, and other rules. The other main theme is tone and stress, including issues in data collection, the assignment of primary and secondary stress, resolution of stress clashes, lexical accent, and syntax-tone interaction. The final section is on sign language, with special attention paid to iconicity, phonological processes, and the relation between phonetic and phonological representation.

Book Monosyllables

Download or read book Monosyllables written by Thomas Stolz and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2012-10-22 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book The Impossibility of Perfection

Download or read book The Impossibility of Perfection written by Michael Slote and published by OUP USA. This book was released on 2011-08-18 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book utilizes feminist thought and other philosophical considerations to argue in a unique way for an ethical picture of human life that stands in marked contrast with traditional understandings. Slote here revives Isaiah Berlin's bold views on the impossibility of perfection in ways that no one has previously attempted. The Appendix describes a new kind of philosophical/ethical methodology that combines and balances (traditionally) "feminine" and "masculine" elements.

Book Things Facts and Events

Download or read book Things Facts and Events written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2022-04-19 with total page 544 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The volume deals with ontological and semantical issues concerning things, facts and events. Ontology tells us about what there is, whereas semantics provides answers to how we refer to what there is. Basic ontological categories are commonly accepted along with basic linguistic types, and linguistic types are accepted as basic if and because they refer to acknowledged ontological categories. In that sense, both disciplines are concerned with structure - the structure of the world and the structure of our language. An extended introduction overviews the topic as a whole, presenting in detail its history and the main contemporary approaches and discussions. More than 20 contributions by internationally acknowledged scholars make the volume a comprehensive study of some very fundamental philosophical entities.

Book A Lateral Theory of Phonology

Download or read book A Lateral Theory of Phonology written by Tobias Scheer and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2004 with total page 926 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The architecture of the human language faculty has been one of the main foci of the linguistic research of the last half century. This branch of linguistics, broadly known as Generative Grammar, is concerned with the formulation of explanatory formal accounts of linguistic phenomena with the ulterior goal of gaining insight into the properties of the 'language organ'. The series comprises high quality monographs and collected volumes that address such issues. The topics in this series range from phonology to semantics, from syntax to information structure, from mathematical linguistics to studies of the lexicon.

Book The Road to Parnassus Artist Strategies in Contemporary Art

Download or read book The Road to Parnassus Artist Strategies in Contemporary Art written by Diego Mantoan and published by Vernon Press. This book was released on 2020-10-06 with total page 449 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How can one become a successful artist? Where should one start a career in the art world? What are useful strategies to achieve recognition in the art system? Such questions hoard in students' minds ever since entering art school and they probably chase every kind of art professional who is at an early career stage. “The Road to Parnassus” tries to understand what makes a good start in today's art world, who are influential players in the field and which strategies might apply. The swift career ascension of Glasgow artist Douglas Gordon – one of today's leading visual artists – and of the broader YBA generation that rose into worldwide prominence in the 1990s – Damien Hirst and Sarah Lucas among the best known – serves as a convenient case to analyse contemporary artist strategies. This book takes a multidisciplinary approach – spanning from traditional art history, to sociology and economics – pursuing the reconstruction of the field of forces in art as intended by French sociologist Pierre Bourdieu. Compared to previous publications on art system dynamics, such as Thompson's “The $12 Million Stuffed Shark”, this book offers an enhanced understanding of the factors that allow a young artist to enter the arena of contemporary art. The present research should help uncover the art system logic – which appears enigmatic to non-experts – revealing that artists are aware they need to consider global trends, beat competitors and meet the demands of dealers, collectors, curators and museums. This book furthers existing contributions on the YBAs (for example Stallabrass' “High Art Lite”), offering innovative conclusions on recent British art, such as on the duality between London and Glasgow, the gender opposition among emerging artists and the predominance of resourceful authors.
