Book excerpt: For 50 years, civilians have avoided hearing about the controversial experiences of Vietnam veterans, many of whom suffer through post-traumatic stress alone. Through interviews conducted with 17 soldiers, this book shares the stories of those who have been silenced. These men and women tell us about life before and after the war. They candidly share stories of 40-plus years lived on the "edge of the knife" and many wonder what their lives would be like if they had come home to praise and parades. They offer their tragedies and successes to newer veterans as choices to be made or rejected.

Download or read book Vietnam Journal written by LT (JG) Lee Siggers MSC USN and published by Page Publishing Inc. This book was released on 2019-08-30 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Vietnam Journal is a personal record of a young "mustang" naval officer and his team of three doctors and eleven hospital corpsmen sent to Vietnam following the Tet Offensive in 1968 under the operational control of the US Agency for International Development. Their mission was to assist the medical staff of a Vietnamese civilian hospital of the early nineteenth-century variety for 365 days. It was a struggle of living and working under the most trying conditions of enemy threat, culture shock, language barriers, and the general chaos of military, inefficient civilian agencies, and foreign entity conflicts. The team being responsible to each of these for something yet receiving support from none. However, it is also a story of an evolution of young men, most under the age of twenty-one, coming from a world of set standards with clear expectations and objectives and their adaptations and changes to get the job done and survive. They were surrounded by the war, but not a part of it, except to be involved in the aftermath of its result near them. Yet they were constantly targeted by mortar and rockets fire on the average of every ten days. Most of the team handled the stress well. Several of the older team members did not. The Journal is noticeably frank in capturing the team's interactions with the circumstances they found themselves in and with each other. Their achievements, shortcomings, exceptional performances, prejudices, and individual creativeness are recorded as a matter of fact and without regard to rank or position. It is honest and replete with its own recurring humor. It has its share of mysteries, deception and crime, and intrigue. None of the team member were aware of their actions being recorded, except the author. It was not meant to be secretly recorded, it just never was questioned or discussed.

Book excerpt: The acclaimed Vietnam Journal series from Don Lomax, nominated for a Harvey Award, is collected and presented as a series of graphic novels. Vietnam Journal is a look at the Vietnam War through the eyes of a war journalist, Scott 'Journal' Neithammer, as he chronicles the lives and events of soldiers on the front line during the Vietnam War. Creator Don Lomax based Vietnam Journal on his experiences on his tour of duty in Vietnam in the mid 1960's. In BOOK SEVEN, the United States military decides to launch an offensive into the A Shau Valley near the Laotian border. This has been a long time staging area that the Viet Cong have used for years to send men and supplies into South Vietnam from the enemy's sanctuary in Laos. Meanwhile 'Journal' becomes fascinated with the story of a prisoner of war who belonged to a small tribe that has lived in the A Shau Valley for centuries. They have no sense of country, politics or ideology, only for their local people, but they are dragged anyhow into a war they couldn't even comprehend. And as the battle at A Shau Valley continues even though Nixon has taken over as President of the United States, 'Journal, always trying to stay as impartial as possible, can't contain his rage when he finds the Viet Cong receiving medical supplies from United States protesters back home against the war. Also included in BOOK SEVEN is the collected Hamburger Hill serial series that appeared in Gallery Magazine. Picked by Entertainment Weekly as "a graphic novel you should own" and recommended by the Military History Book Club. "Lomax bases his fictional work on his real experiences in Vietnam in 1966, with powerful results. It is Lomax's concern for average soldiers that, in the end, makes his work significant." - Publishers Weekly. "Even today, VIETNAM JOURNAL is one of the most gritty and brutally honest war stories ever published." - Brian Cronin, Comic Book Resources. "A powerful collection of stories and history of the Vietnam War, created by a veteran of both the war and of war comics " - Douglas P. Dave, School Library Journal.
