Book Vietnam Journal

Download or read book Vietnam Journal written by LT (JG) Lee Siggers MSC USN and published by Page Publishing, Incorporated. This book was released on 2019-07-16 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Vietnam Journal is a personal record of a young "mustang" naval officer and his team of three doctors and eleven hospital corpsmen sent to Vietnam following the Tet Offensive in 1968 under the operational control of the US Agency for International Development. Their mission was to assist the medical staff of a Vietnamese civilian hospital of the early nineteenth-century variety for 365 days. It was a struggle of living and working under the most trying conditions of enemy threat, culture shock, language barriers, and the general chaos of military, inefficient civilian agencies, and foreign entity conflicts. The team being responsible to each of these for something yet receiving support from none. However, it is also a story of an evolution of young men, most under the age of twenty-one, coming from a world of set standards with clear expectations and objectives and their adaptations and changes to get the job done and survive. They were surrounded by the war, but not a part of it, except to be involved in the aftermath of its result near them. Yet they were constantly targeted by mortar and rockets fire on the average of every ten days. Most of the team handled the stress well. Several of the older team members did not. The Journal is noticeably frank in capturing the team's interactions with the circumstances they found themselves in and with each other. Their achievements, shortcomings, exceptional performances, prejudices, and individual creativeness are recorded as a matter of fact and without regard to rank or position. It is honest and replete with its own recurring humor. It has its share of mysteries, deception and crime, and intrigue. None of the team member were aware of their actions being recorded, except the author. It was not meant to be secretly recorded, it just never was questioned or discussed.

Book Vietnam Journal Series Two Volume 3 Ripcord

Download or read book Vietnam Journal Series Two Volume 3 Ripcord written by Don Lomax and published by Caliber Comics. This book was released on 2020-04-12 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vietnam Journal Returns! Scott "Journal" Neithammer has been reporting first-hand on President Nixon's military incursion into Cambodia to root out the North Vietnamese Army's, until then, untouchable sanctuaries. However, this all comes to an abrupt end when he is kidnapped by over-zealous Military Police and returned to South Vietnam to face the Provost Marshall's wrath. The incident sparks Neithammer's unexpected journey back into the dreaded A Shau Valley where the 101st Airborne Division, once again, attempts to bloody the noses of the NVA. Just one year earlier, their Brothers had fought a prolonged and divisive battle in the A Shau Valley on Hill 937, Dong Ap Bia Mountain-aka Hamburger Hill. This brings us to the siege of Fire Support Base RIPCORD. This is a story of over-confidence, arrogance, and revenge on the part of Military Assistance Command Vietnam in Saigon, coupled with an under-strength U.S. force sent to face an enemy who outnumbers them ten to one. RIPCORD was the final large unit battle in the waning days of the Vietnam War for the United States. The troops were expected to face a massive enemy presence, have minimal or no casualties, and receive limited ordinance and support, while vanquishing a highly motivated and well supplied enemy. In the jargon of the boonie rats of the day-"f**king typical". RIPCORD is also the story of the senseless waste of young American lives, as was Hamburger Hill before it. Nevertheless, it recognizes the extreme heroism of the lowly infantry grunt, average age 18-years-old, who was expected to complete an overwhelming task. RIPCORD...a little known battle with an all too predictable outcome. Collects Vietnam Journal: Series Two issues 11-15.

Book The Eleven Days of Christmas

Download or read book The Eleven Days of Christmas written by Marshall L. Michel (III) and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By December 1972, the Paris Peace Talks to end the Vietnam War had fallen apart. With Congress preparing to cut off all funding for the war, President Richard Nixon had to act quickly to pressure the North Vietnamese into signing a peace agreement. He ordered the massive bombing of Hanoi for the first time by America's big stick, the Strategic Air Command's B-52s. But instead of being overwhelmed, the North Vietnamese SAM missile crews initially shattered the B-52 force. For eleven days the air battle swung back and forth, moving from what appeared to be a certain U.S. victory, to what appeared to be a North Vietnamese victory to the ultimate ambiguous denouement. Marshall Michel has used hundreds of formerly classified documents from both American and Vietnamese archives and interviews with dozens of Americans and Vietnamese who participated at all levels to tell, for the first time, the dramatic story of this critical battle in the war. Moving from the White House to the B-52 cockpits to the missile sites and POW camps of Hanoi, "The Eleven Days of Christmas" is a gripping tale of heroism and incompetence in a battle whose political and military legacy is still a matter of controversy.
