Book Viennese Idylls Classic Reprint

Download or read book Viennese Idylls Classic Reprint written by Arthur Schnitzler and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-13 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Viennese Idylls While a comparison of Guy de Maupassant with Arthur Schnitzler may at first seem extravagant, still the Austrian writer has brought his short story to a level high enough to dare comparison with any modern author. While de Maupassant's eroticism is very evident, Schnitzler sis far more delicate, subtle, and not so much on the surface, and there is in the French author a sameness of treatment not to be found in Schnitzler. The latter occupies a place in modern Austrian literature comparable only with the position held by Sudermann and Hauptmann in Germany. Arthur Schnitzler was born in Vienna in 1862. The son of a physician, he followed his father's career and took his degree in 1885. His first literary attempt was made the following year, but it was not until six years later, in 1892, that he came into prominence with the publication of "Anatol." Book The Kindness of Strangers

Download or read book The Kindness of Strangers written by Salka Viertel and published by New York Review of Books. This book was released on 2019-01-22 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A memoir about showbiz in the early 20th century that travels from the theaters of Vienna, Prague, and Berlin, to Hollywood during the golden age, complete with encounters with Franz Kafka, Albert Einstein, and Greta Garbo along the way. Salka Viertel’s autobiography tells of a brilliant, creative, and well-connected woman’s pilgrimage through the darkest years of the twentieth century, a journey that would take her from a remote province of the Austro-Hungarian Empire to Hollywood. The Kindness of Strangers is, to quote the New Yorker writer S. N. Behrman, “a very rich book. It provides a panorama of the dissolving civilizations of the twentieth century. In all of them the author lived at the apex of their culture and artistic aristocracies. Her childhood . . . is an entrancing idyll. In Berlin, in Prague, in Vienna, there appears Karl Kraus, Kafka, Rilke, Robert Musil, Schoenberg, Einstein, Alban Berg. There is the suffering and disruption of the First World War and the suffering and agony after it, which is described with such intimacy and vividness that you endure these terrible years with the author. Then comes the migration to Hollywood, where Salka’s house on Maybery Road becomes a kind of Pantheon for the gathered artists, musicians, and writers. It seems to me that no one has ever described Hollywood and the life of writers there with such verve.”

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first complete English translation of the nineteenth-century Austrian innovator's evocative, elemental cycle of novellas. For Kafka he was “my fat brother”; Thomas Mann called him “one of the most peculiar, enigmatic, secretly audacious and strangely gripping storytellers in world literature.” Often misunderstood as an idyllic poet of “beetles and buttercups,” the nineteenth-century Austrian writer Adalbert Stifter can now be seen as a radical experimenter with narrative and a forerunner of nature writing’s darker currents. One of his best-known works, the novella cycle Motley Stones now appears in its first complete English translation, a rendition that respects the bracing strangeness of the original. In six thematically linked novellas, including the beloved classic “Rock Crystal,” human dramas play out amid the natural cycles of the Alps or the urban rhythms of Vienna—environments so keenly observed that they emerge as the tales’ most indomitable protagonists. Stifter’s human characters are equally haunting—children braving perils, eccentrics and loners harboring enigmatic torments. “We seek to glimpse the gentle law that guides the human race,” Stifter famously wrote. What he glimpsed, more often than not, was the abyss that lies behind the idyll. The tension between his humane sensitivity and his dark visions is what lends his writing its heartbreaking power.
