Book Brus Muehl Nitsch Schwarzkogler

Download or read book Brus Muehl Nitsch Schwarzkogler written by Malcolm Green and published by Atlas Press (GB). This book was released on 1999 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These four artists from the sixties created a form of performance art which has become legendary for the extreme violence of its expression. Fined, gaoled, forced into exile, they were ignored by the art establishment of the day only to now be hailed as one of Europe's most outstanding contributions to post-war art. This anthology of their writings and documentation, brought together with the collaboration of the artists, Brus, Nitsch and Muehl, illustrates their intentions for the first time and shows how they established and explored a new territory for art.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To understand the full extent of this collective gesture of protest against history carried out in a brief space of time by Viennese artists in Vienna, it is essential to forget that they were born out of the horror of national-socialism. As a product of the 1960s, Viennese Actionism and its extremism represent an artistic phenomenon of great contemporary interest, when we find that violence resides everywhere behind the false appearance of universal peace. Arising in a marginal cultural environment, this book looks at Viennese Actionism art as a convulsive, virulent re-encounter between experimental art and destruction.

Book Vienna Actionism

Download or read book Vienna Actionism written by Kerstin Barnick-Braun and published by Walther Konig Verlag. This book was released on 2012 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vienna Actionism was the most extreme artistic project of the 1960s, mostly preceding and always surpassing the other performance art, body art and happenings in terms of sheer violent excess. Though never officially a group, Günter Brus, Otto Mühl, Hermann Nitsch and Rudolf Schwarzkogler shared a similar reaction to the restrictive political and cultural climate of the Austrian art scene of the 1950s and 1960s. They established the body as a site of exploration, and its blood, sweat and excrement as art material: performance as the transgression of both social and religious taboo, and art itself as a violent, tragic recognition of brute fact. Others, such as Kurt Kren, Ernst Schmidt Jr., Valie Export and Peter Weibel, used the medium of video and film to critique the repressive aspects of language and mass media, and the Wiener Gruppe (Friedrich Achleitner, Konrad Bayer, Gerhard Rühm, Oswald Wiener) saw language as a visual and acoustic material, and transformed it into collages, happenings and "literary cabarets." This landmark publication includes 1,400 color images, biographies and an illustrated chronology and index of all the "actions," literature and films of the movement now recognized as one of the most significant contributions to postwar European art. This volume will be the standard reference work on Vienna Actionism for years to come.

Book Un Civilizing Processes

Download or read book Un Civilizing Processes written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2016-08-29 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The collapse of the supposedly ‘civilized’ German nation into the ‘barbarism’ of Hitler’s Third Reich has cast a long shadow over interpretations of German culture and society. In the remarkable work of Norbert Elias, himself a refugee from Nazi Germany, a deep concern with the distinctiveness of ‘the Germans’ is linked with an ambitious attempt to work out more general relations between broad historical processes – patterns of state formation, changing social structures – and the character of the individual self, as evidenced in changing thresholds of shame and embarrassment. In critical engagement with Elias’s notion of the ‘civilizing process’, the essays collected here explore moments of excess and transgression, moments when the very boundaries of ‘civilization’ are both constructed and challenged. Inter-disciplinary contributions – on topics ranging from medieval laughter, cursing and swearing, through to music, the bourgeois self, and aspects of modern violence – highlight the complexity of inter-relations between the individual imagination and creativity, on the one hand, and the brute facts of political power and social structural inequalities, on the other; and develop new insights into the changing patterns of culture and society in Germany from the Middle Ages to the present.

Book excerpt: The focus of this publication is Franz West's (1947-2012) Kombi-Werke installations, in which greatly differing individual pieces are brought together and then recomposed into new works. Gathering elements such as fittings, furniture, sculpture, videos and works on paper from all periods--and even works made by artist friends--into grand ensembles, the Kombi-Werke are without doubt key elements in West's legacy. An example is the three-part papier-mâché sculpture "Redundanz" its starting point is the gouache "Lost Weight" (1994), with its motif of a dieting woman showing her oversized pants. Omitting the "W," West transforms "Lost Weight" into "Lost Eight," in order to derive the title for a larger work, "Where Is my Eight?" With 250 color illustrations, this substantial and inspiring volume, and the exhibition it accompanies, were overseen by the artist himself, before his death in the summer of 2012.

Book The Art Of Destruction

    Book Details:
  • Author : Stephen Barber
  • Publisher : SCB Distributors
  • Release : 2013-03-27
  • ISBN : 1908694920
  • Pages : 162 pages

Download or read book The Art Of Destruction written by Stephen Barber and published by SCB Distributors. This book was released on 2013-03-27 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Vienna Aktion Group formed the most provocative, insurgent and challenging of all the worldwide art movements of the 1960s. Their sexually-charged and anti-social actions exacted a profound and irreparable upheaval in the way in which art was conceived. Using their own bodies as raw material, the Aktion Group undertook experiments in cruelty that disassembled the human body and its acts into compacted gestures of blood, meat and excreta. The films of the Vienna Aktion Group - made both by the group themselves, and by collaborators such as Kurt Kren - form the essential residue, debris and evidence of their performances. Film forms the sensitized medium - as unique and ferocious in its impact as the corporeal material upon which the Aktion Group worked - that allied itself most intimately to their experiments. For the first time, this book focuses on those films as fully revealing the obsessions, ambitions and outrages of the Aktion Group. The iconoclastic work of the Vienna Aktion Group is now more contemporary than ever before, and THE ART OF DESTRUCTION provides a comprehensive introduction to that work in both film and performance. Fully illustrated and annotated, this is a book of compelling interest to all students of film, art and performance, and for all readers engaged with questioning social and corporate cultures.

Book Franz West The 1990s

Download or read book Franz West The 1990s written by Franz West and published by David Zwirner Books. This book was released on 2016-09-27 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the 1990s, Franz West’s work moved in new and innovative stylistic directions, as his career was solidified through important international exhibitions. This publication delves into this significant decade in an effort to contextualize the evolution of West’s singular practice. The 1990s proved critical in the development of the idiosyncratic style for which West is still known today. His key innovations from this period—which included the addition of exuberant color to his papier-mâché forms, the incorporation of furniture both as art object and as social incubator, and the inclusion of work by other artists in his own installations—resulted in dynamic, frequently interactive installations that helped to expand the possibilities of sculpture and the ways in which art is experienced. Produced on the occasion of David Zwirner’s 2014 exhibition in New York, this fully illustrated publication gives an in-depth overview of the decade, arguably the most important of the artist’s lengthy career. It features essays by noted West scholars Eva Badura-Triska and Veit Loers, as well as a personal account by Bernhard Riff on video collaborations made with the artist throughout the 1990s.

Download or read book Ethics of Contemporary Art written by Theo Reeves-Evison and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2020-11-26 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What happens when the shock of artistic transgression wears off, when scandal dissipates, when outrage becomes a tired routine? In this original new book, Theo Reeves-Evison argues that transgressive art no longer succeeds on its own terms in societies where language, prohibition and morality have become increasingly malleable. This compels us to rethink the relationship between contemporary art and ethics, and focus our attention on the potential of artworks to propose new values rather than simply challenge pre-existing moral codes. Assembling a novel theoretical framework from the writings of Félix Guattari, Jacques Lacan and others, Ethics of Contemporary Art narrates a journey away from transgression towards a new critical paradigm for the relationship between ethics and aesthetics that places questions of subjectivity centre stage. Along the way artworks by Kader Attia, Artur Zmijewski, Dora Garcia and others serve as springboards launching discussions of the varied pathways along which a renewed ethics of contemporary art might develop.
