This book was released on 2016-08-24 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research introduces a conceptual framework for enforcing privacy-related restrictions in smart video surveillance systems based on danger levels and incident types to be handled. It increases the selectivity of surveillance by restricting data processing to individuals associated to incidents under investigation. Constraints are enforced by usage control, which is instantiated for video surveillance for the first time and enables tailoring such systems to comply with data protection law.
Download or read book Governing Police Stops Across Europe written by Elizabeth Aston and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-12-19 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book takes a critical and comparative approach to the analysis of the governance of police stops across Europe. It draws on an EU COST Action research network on Police Stops which engaged academics and practitioners from 29 countries to better understand the practice of police stops. It begins by examining how police stops are defined and the various legal rules and levels of accountability afforded. The chapters are arranged by theme to focus on a core aspect of the governance of police stops. These include: legal frameworks and police discretion; internal governance; external accountability and civilian oversight; possibilities for legal recourse; and the different roles of data and technology. Each compares the distinct approaches evident across Europe, often employing case studies. The book adopts a critical approach, acknowledging governance as contested and involving diverse (state, non-state and supranational) actors. It considers implications for policing in a rapidly changing environment globally.

Download or read book Ageing and Technology written by Emma Domínguez-Rué and published by transcript Verlag. This book was released on 2016-01-31 with total page 341 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The booming increase of the senior population has become a social phenomenon and a challenge to our societies, and technological advances have undoubtedly contributed to improve the lives of elderly citizens in numerous aspects. In current debates on technology, however, the »human factor« is often largely ignored. The ageing individual is rather seen as a malfunctioning machine whose deficiencies must be diagnosed or as a set of limitations to be overcome by means of technological devices. This volume aims at focusing on the perspective of human beings deriving from the development and use of technology: this change of perspective - taking the human being and not technology first - may help us to become more sensitive to the ambivalences involved in the interaction between humans and technology, as well as to adapt technologies to the people that created the need for its existence, thus contributing to improve the quality of life of senior citizens.
Download or read book Spaces and Identities in Border Regions written by Christian Wille and published by transcript Verlag. This book was released on 2015-11-30 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spatial and identity research operates with differentiations and relations. These are particularly useful heuristic tools when examining border regions where social and geopolitical demarcations diverge. Applying this approach, the authors of this volume investigate spatial and identity constructions in cross-border contexts as they appear in everyday, institutional and media practices. The results are discussed with a keen eye for obliquely aligned spaces and identities and relinked to governmental issues of normalization and subjectivation. The studies base upon empirical surveys conducted in Germany, France, Belgium and Luxembourg.

Download or read book The Democratization of Artificial Intelligence written by Andreas Sudmann and published by transcript Verlag. This book was released on 2019-10-31 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After a long time of neglect, Artificial Intelligence is once again at the center of most of our political, economic, and socio-cultural debates. Recent advances in the field of Artifical Neural Networks have led to a renaissance of dystopian and utopian speculations on an AI-rendered future. Algorithmic technologies are deployed for identifying potential terrorists through vast surveillance networks, for producing sentencing guidelines and recidivism risk profiles in criminal justice systems, for demographic and psychographic targeting of bodies for advertising or propaganda, and more generally for automating the analysis of language, text, and images. Against this background, the aim of this book is to discuss the heterogenous conditions, implications, and effects of modern AI and Internet technologies in terms of their political dimension: What does it mean to critically investigate efforts of net politics in the age of machine learning algorithms?

Download or read book Digital Roots written by Gabriele Balbi and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2021-09-07 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As media environments and communication practices evolve over time, so do theoretical concepts. This book analyzes some of the most well-known and fiercely discussed concepts of the digital age from a historical perspective, showing how many of them have pre-digital roots and how they have changed and still are constantly changing in the digital era. Written by leading authors in media and communication studies, the chapters historicize 16 concepts that have become central in the digital media literature, focusing on three main areas. The first part, Technologies and Connections, historicises concepts like network, media convergence, multimedia, interactivity and artificial intelligence. The second one is related to Agency and Politics and explores global governance, datafication, fake news, echo chambers, digital media activism. The last one, Users and Practices, is finally devoted to telepresence, digital loneliness, amateurism, user generated content, fandom and authenticity. The book aims to shed light on how concepts emerge and are co-shaped, circulated, used and reappropriated in different contexts. It argues for the need for a conceptual media and communication history that will reveal new developments without concealing continuities and it demonstrates how the analogue/digital dichotomy is often a misleading one.
Download or read book Image Action Space written by Luisa Feiersinger and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2018-10-08 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Screen-based media, such as touch-screens, navigation systems and virtual reality applications merge images and operations. They turn viewing first and foremost into using and reflect the turn towards an active role of the image in guiding a user’s action and perception. From professional environments to everyday life multiple configurations of screens organise working routines, structure interaction, and situate users in space both within and beyond the boundaries of the screen. This volume examines the linking of screen, space, and operation in fields such as remote navigation, architecture, medicine, interface design, and film production asking how the interaction with and through screens structures their users’ action and perception.
Download or read book Stereo vision based road condition monitoring written by Brunken, Hauke and published by Universitätsverlag der TU Berlin. This book was released on 2021-05-12 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When planning road construction measures, it is essential to have up-to-date information on road conditions. If this information is not to be obtained manually, it is currently obtained using laser scanners mounted on mobile mapping vehicles, which can measure the 3D road profile. However, a large number of mobile mapping vehicles would be necessary to record an entire road network on a regular basis. Since 2D road damages can be found automatically on monocular camera images, the idea was born to use a stereo camera system to capture the 3D profile of roads. With stereo camera systems, it would be possible to equip a large number of vehicles and regularly collect data from large road networks. In this thesis, the potential applications of a stereo camera system for measuring road profiles, which is mounted behind the windshield of a vehicle, are investigated. Since this requires a calibration of the stereo camera system, but the effort for the user should be kept low, the camera self-calibration for this application is also examined. 3D reconstruction from stereoscopic images is a well-studied topic, but its application on road surfaces with little and repetitive textures requires special algorithms. For this reason, a new stereo method was developed. It is based on the plane-sweep approach in combination with semi-global matching. It was tested with different measures for pixel comparison. Furthermore, the plane-sweep approach was implemented in a neural network that solves the stereo correspondence problem in a single step. It uses the stereoscopic images as input and provides an elevation image as output. A completely new approach was developed for the self-calibration of mono cameras and stereo camera systems. Previous methods search for feature points in several images of the same scene. The points are matched between the images and used for the calibration. In contrast to these methods, the proposed method uses feature maps instead of feature points to compare multiple views of one and the same plane. To estimate the unknown parameters, the backpropagation algorithm is used together with the gradient descent method. The measurements obtained by stereoscopic image processing were compared with those obtained by industrial laser scanners. They show that both measurements are very close to each other and that a stereoscopic camera system is in principle suitable for capturing the surface profile of a road. Experiments show that the proposed self-calibration method is capable of estimating all parameters of a complex camera model, including lens distortion, with high precision.

Download or read book Asylum Determination in Europe written by Nick Gill and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-01-01 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on new research material from ten European countries, Asylum Determination in Europe: Ethnographic Perspectives brings together a range of detailed accounts of the legal and bureaucratic processes by which asylum claims are decided. The book includes a legal overview of European asylum determination procedures, followed by sections on the diverse actors involved, the means by which they communicate, and the ways in which they make life and death decisions on a daily basis. It offers a contextually rich account that moves beyond doctrinal law to uncover the gaps and variances between formal policy and legislation, and law as actually practiced. The contributors employ a variety of disciplinary perspectives - sociological, anthropological, geographical and linguistic - but are united in their use of an ethnographic methodological approach. Through this lens, the book captures the confusion, improvisation, inconsistency, complexity and emotional turmoil inherent to the process of claiming asylum in Europe.

Download or read book Threat Communication and the US Order After 9 11 written by Vanessa Ossa and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-10 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This volume investigates the perception of threat, with particular regard to the roles, functions, and agencies of various types of media. With a focus on the profound impact of the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 on the US-American political, social, and cultural order, the chapters reach from the early days after the attacks up to the 2016 election of Donald J. Trump. An international team of contributors analyze how the perceived threats and their subsequent representations changed during this period and what part different forms of media-media institutions, media technologies, and media formats-played within these transformations. Media theoretical perspectives are thus combined with historical approaches to examine the "re-ordering" of the nation, the state, and society proposed in an increasingly converging, multimodal, and networked media environment. This book's focus on the interrelation between Media Studies, Cultural Studies, and American Studies makes it an indispensable landmark for fields such as Historical Research, Media Theory, Narratology, and Popular Culture Studies"--
