Book Spanish American Authors

Download or read book Spanish American Authors written by Angel Flores and published by New York : Wilson. This book was released on 1992 with total page 944 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The late scholar and critic Flores (1900-1992) selected some 330 major novelists and poets from Puerto Rico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America, both as exemplars of the literature of all the countries of Spanish America and as personally important literary creators. Flores knew most of the authors and was able to obtain from many extraordinary autobiographical passages that often form a part of the author's sketch. Most of the sketches were written in Spanish and translated into English. Critical insights and assessments of translations (a feature of inestimable value and interest) accompany biographies and autobiographies. All material was edited by Flores, who also prepared most of the excellent and extensive bibliographies. Annotation copyright by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR

Download or read book Barrio Rhythm written by Steven Joseph Loza and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 1993 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The hit movie La Bamba (based on the life of Richie Valens), the versatile singer Linda Ronstadt, and the popular rock group Los Lobos all have roots in the dynamic music of the Mexican-American community in East Los Angeles. With the recent "Eastside Renaissance" in the area, barrio music has taken on symbolic power throughout the Southwest, yet its story has remained undocumented and virtually untold. In Barrio Rhythm, Steven Loza brings this hidden history to life, demonstrating the music's essential role in the cultural development of East Los Angeles and its influence on mainstream popular culture. Drawing from oral histories and other primary sources, as well as from appropriate representative songs, Loza provides a historical overview of the music from the nineteenth century to the present and offers in-depth profiles of nine Mexican-American artists, groups, and entrepreneurs in Southern California from the post-World War II era to the present. His interviews with many of today's most influential barrio musicians, including members of Los Lobos, Eddie Cano, Lalo Guerrero, and Willie chronicle the cultural forces active in this complex urban community.

Book Punkademics

  • Author : Dylan A. T. Miner
  • Publisher :
  • Release : 2012

  • Pages : 0 pages

Download or read book Punkademics written by Dylan A. T. Miner and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In the thirty years since Dick Hebdige published Subculture: The Meaning of Style, the seemingly antithetical worlds of punk rock and academia have converged in some rather interesting, if not peculiar, ways. A once marginal subculture documented in homemade 'zines and three chord songs has become fodder for dozens of scholarly articles, books, PhD dissertations, and conversations amongst well-mannered conference panelists. At the same time, the academic ranks have been increasingly infiltrated by professors and graduate students whose educations began not in the classroom, but in the lyric sheets of 7" records and the cramped confines of all-ages shows. Punkademics explores these varied intersections by giving voice to some of the people who arguably best understand the odd bedfellows of punk and academia. In addition to being one of the first edited collections of scholarly work on punk, it is a timely book that features original essays, interviews, and select reprints from notable writers, musicians, visual artists, and emerging talents who actively cut & paste the boundaries between punk culture, politics, and higher education"--Publisher's description
