Book Victorian Visions of War and Peace

Download or read book Victorian Visions of War and Peace written by Sean Willcock and published by Paul Mellon Centre. This book was released on 2021-11-09 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A study of how artists and photographers shaped imperial visions of war and peace in the Victorian period In an era that saw the birth of photography (c. 1839) and the rise of the illustrated press (c. 1842), the British experience of their empire became increasingly defined by the processes and products of image-making. Examining moments of military and diplomatic crisis, this book considers how artists and photographers operating "in the field" helped to define British visions of war and peace. The Victorians increasingly turned to visual spectacle to help them compose imperial sovereignty. The British Empire was thus rendered into a spectacle of "peace," from world's fairs to staged diplomatic rituals. Yet this occurred against a backdrop of incessant colonial war--campaigns which, far from being ignored, were in fact unprecedentedly visible within the cultural forms of Victorian society. Visual media thus shaped the contours of imperial statecraft and established many of the aesthetic and ethical frames within which the colonial violence was confronted.

Download or read book Women of the Regiment written by Myna Trustram and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1984-08-31 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a detailed study of the domestic background of life in the Victorian army. It describes the lives of women who lived on the edge of the regimental community as wives, daughters, prostitutes, lovers and workers. It examines the development of policy on marriage of men in the ranks and discusses the links between the military regulation of marriage and Victorian legislation on prostitution. The early history of the service family and the sources of welfare available to families - the poor law, philanthropy, and the regimental system itself - are examined in the light of attitudes to soldiers' marriages. Women of the Regiment reveals the hitherto unexplored role played by the military in shaping Victorian social policy, domestic ideology and attitudes to sexuality. Its originality lies in its feminist discussions of an institution notorious as a male stronghold; as such it makes a vital contribution to our understanding of the nature of masculinity and women's oppression.

Book The Victorians and Edwardians at War

Download or read book The Victorians and Edwardians at War written by John Hannavy and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2012-09-20 with total page 113 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By the time the first photographs were taken at war in the late 1840s, the idea that 'the camera cannot lie' was already firmly embedded in the Victorian psyche. 'Truthful' in a way the work of the war artist could never be, despite the initially long exposures and cumbersome equipment, cameras have been used to document war ever since the celebrated photographs of Roger Fenton in the Crimea. Through a rich selection of images – many of them never before published – this book tells the story of the photographers who chronicled Britain's Victorian and Edwardian wars and those who fought in them.

Download or read book Warriors of the Queen written by William Wright and published by The History Press. This book was released on 2014-01-06 with total page 490 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Who were the men who commanded the British Army in the numerous small wars of the Victorian Empire? Today, many are all but forgotten, save the likes of Cardigan, Kitchener, Baden-Powell and Gordon of Khartoum. Yet they were a disparate and fascinating assemblage, made up of men of true military genius, as well as egoists, fools and despots. In Warriors of the Queen, William Wright surveys over 170 of these men, examining their careers and personalities. He reveals not only the lives of the great military names of the period but also of those whom history has overlooked, from James ‘Buster’ Browne, who once fought a battle in his nightshirt, to Jack Bisset, who had fought in three South African wars by his twenty-third birthday. Based on original research and complemented by over sixty photographs, Warriors of the Queen provides new insight into the men who built (and sometimes endangered) the British Empire on the battlefield.

Book The Victorian soldier in Africa

Download or read book The Victorian soldier in Africa written by Edward Spiers and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2013-07-19 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This electronic version has been made available under a Creative Commons (BY-NC-ND) open access license. The Victorian soldier in Africa re-examines the campaign experience of British soldiers in Africa during the period, 1874–1902 – the zenith of the Victorian imperial expansion – and does so from the perspective of the regimental soldier. The book utilises an unprecedented number of letters and diaries, written by regimental officers and other ranks, to allow soldiers to speak for themselves about their experience of colonial warfare. The sources demonstrate the adaptability of the British army in fighting in different climates, over demanding terrain and against a diverse array of enemies. They also uncover soldiers’ responses to army reforms of the era as well as the response to the introduction of new technologies of war. Moreover, the book provides commentary on soldiers’ views of commanding officers and politicians alongside assessment of war correspondents, colonial auxiliaries and African natives in their roles as bearers, allies and enemies. This book reveals new insights on imperial and racial attitudes within the army, on relations between soldiers and the media and the production of information and knowledge from frontline to homefront. It will make fascinating reading for students, academics and enthusiasts in imperial history, Victorian studies, military history and colonial warfare.

Download or read book Victoria and the Victorians written by Herbert Tingsten and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 616 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is divided into four parts. Part I discusses the meanings of Victorianism: its religious beliefs, sexual attitudes, and the hypocrisy of the period. Part II deals with Queen Victoria as legend, woman, and monarch. Part III ranges through the trends of thought which formed the intellectual climate of the age: Jeremy Bentham's doctrines, the meaning of Utilitarianism, John Stuart Mill, social and economic reforms, imperialism, the rise of democracy, and Darwinism. Part IV is a picture gallary of the great Victorian statesmen, social leaders, reformers, poets, and military heroes: Gladstone, Disraeli, Salisbury, Parnell, Edward VII, Ruskin, Tennyson, Kipling, Wolseley, and Gordon -- and historic episodes such as the charge of the Light Brigade and the Indian mutiny. In these striking thumbnail sketches the author calls a spade a spade.
