Book Victims and Survivors Own Stories of Intrafamilial Child Sexual Abuse

Download or read book Victims and Survivors Own Stories of Intrafamilial Child Sexual Abuse written by Steve Broome and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2019-11-25 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the UK today, it is estimated that nearly one in twenty children are subjected to sexual abuse, with the overwhelming majority being abused within the family environment. However, despite its prevalence, intrafamilial child sexual abuse remains largely shrouded in silence, shame and stigma. Taking a phenomenological approach, this book presents ten retrospective first-person accounts from adult victims and survivors, exploring the impact of such abuse throughout the life course. These stories illustrate how child sexual abuse can cause trauma affecting almost every aspect of life: emotionally, psychologically, interpersonally, behaviourally and cognitively. However, they also demonstrate the remarkable resilience of the human spirit; of how adverse experiences can be lived with, processed, and assimilated. These accounts address a gap in what academics, practitioners and policy makers know about child sexual abuse; give victims and survivors a voice; and open up a conversation about one of the most enduring societal and cultural problems.

Book excerpt: This narrative arts-based research study deepens and expands understanding of the struggles that survivors of intra-familial sexual abuse face and how they navigated these challenges. Through in-depth qualitative interviews with survivors of childhood sexual abuse, this research investigated the relationship between intra-familial child sexual abuse survivors and their abusers. Specifically, survivors were invited to share their experiences of disclosing the abuse during childhood and how this impacted them at the time of the abuse and as an adult. This study explored how each survivor navigated their journey of healing and recovery from the trauma. This research provides implications for providing a holistic understanding of intra-familial child sexual abuse and how survivors learn to navigate life post-abuse. The arts-based digital storytelling approach allowed the participants to share their stories through creative measures and allowed them to take control of their narratives. While each participant had a unique experience of intra-familial child sexual abuse and a journey toward healing, the findings revealed similar experiences and shared meanings. Consistent with previous findings, the participants in the current study shared how through self-discovery, forgiveness, and spiritual development they were able to grow from their trauma. Additionally, many commonalities emerged surrounding how family dynamics changed after disclosing the abuse. This research highlights the participants' bravery, resilience, strength, and courage; they are not victims, but rather, they are survivors. This research concludes with implications for further research in this area.

Book The Trauma Myth The Truth about the Sexual Abuse of Children and Its Aftermath

Download or read book The Trauma Myth The Truth about the Sexual Abuse of Children and Its Aftermath written by Susan A. Clancy and published by ReadHowYouWant.com. This book was released on 2010-05 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Few would argue that the experience of sexual abuse is deeply traumatic for a child. But in this explosive new book, psychologist Susan Clancy reports on years of research and contends that it is not the abuse itself that causes trauma, but rather the narrative that is later imposed on the abuse experience. Clancy demonstrates that the most common feeling victims report is not fear or panic, but confusion. Because children don't understand sexual encounters in the same ways adults do, they normally accommodate their perpetrators - something they feel intensely ashamed about as adults. The professional assumptions about the nature of childhood trauma can harm victims by reinforcing these feelings. Survivors are thus victimized not only by their abusers but also by the industry dedicated to helping them. Path-breaking and controversial, The Trauma Myth empowers survivors to tell their own stories and radically reshapes our understanding of abuse and its aftermath.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every little girl dreams of being a Princess, she just wanted her Mommy and for the boys to stop making her do "stuff" to "satisfy" them. Finding Anna is a gripping first-hand account of a child who survives the horror of sexual abuse and abandonment by those tasked to care for her, in a society that turns a blind eye to sexual abuse. A love-child, unwittingly passed on from one caretaker to the next, eventually ends up being abandoned and left in the care of her philandering father’s family. She discovers the painful reality that life can be cruel. Trish, a child struggles to understand why she was abandoned by her own mother and tries to deal with the trauma of being sexually abused by various family members. Can Trish, now an adult heal from the pain of a childhood, tormented by the rape of her mind, body and soul? "Finding Anna is a story that exposes the stark, ugly truths about being abused and abandoned. Child sexual abuse is a social issue that chooses no race, religion, culture and gender, and those who are lucky to survive it carry the welts and wounds deep into their souls for a lifetime. My country in South East Asia has one of the highest child sexual abuse cases. Unfortunately, the government is doing little to raise awareness and create child protection programs to safeguard children from predators. My goal is to reach as many readers as possible and inspire survivors to come out in the open and advocate against child sexual abuse." --Trish Kaye LLeone

There are approximately 42 million child sexual abuse survivors in the U.S. and millions of bystanders who look the other way as the abuse occurs and cover for the harm-doers with no accountability. Documentary filmmaker and survivor of child sexual abuse and adult rape, Aishah Shahidah Simmons invites diasporic Black people to join her in transformative storytelling that envisions a world that ends child sexual abuse without relying on the criminal justice system. Love WITH Accountability features compelling writings by child sexual abuse survivors, advocates, and Simmons’s mother, who underscores the detrimental impact of parents/caregivers not believing their children when they disclose their sexual abuse. This collection explores disrupting the inhumane epidemic of child sexual abuse, humanely.

Book Along Came a Spider

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ‘In so many ways, although personal accounts are at times difficult to read, this is a book celebrating the victory of the human spirit over personal tragedy. It is not a book of tears and sad stories, but inspiring lives where you cheer for sexual abuse survivors who show the way with courage to rebuild their lives and not let their experiences frame or shame them.’ – Dr Darlene Barriere, Trauma and Child Abuse Counsellor and Psychologist In this confronting collection by victims of child sexual abuse, you will read not only of their horrific experiences as children, but also of their lifetime of living with the consequences and aftereffects of that abuse. There has been silence for too long, and these stories, uncomfortable though they may be to read, should be hidden no longer. The contributors need a voice. They come from various backgrounds: white, Asian, Indigenous, Jewish – male and female. It is important that their individual stories are told, and we honour their courage in giving their accounts to show the world that the scourge of child sexual abuse must be brought to light, and hopefully help our society to no longer allow it to be hidden or suppressed. The aim of this book is to to encourage other victims to seek help and redress; also useful for healers and therapists of child sex abuse survivors and other traumatised people. ‘There is a need to hear these stories, to know what did happen and what is still happening. A need to not bury our heads and say “it won't happen to me” or “I will never let that happen to MY kid.”’ – Lauren White
