Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fascinating journey back in the centuries, to feel closer to a period often erroneously considered as dark and static. In this book, the author shows how those centuries really were, that is to say constantly on the move. Emperors, princes and popes with their armies but also, and mainly, merchants, bandits, pilgrims, people seeking their fortune or their social redemption and also women. All of them travelling long distances, in dangerous conditions, sometimes to the limit of human possibilities. The work is historical, accurate and includes references to tens of works and historiographers dealing with the subject of travelling in the Middle Ages, analyzing different trends. You are going to find out who departed in the Middle Ages and why, you will find plenty of information about roads, inns and different kinds of accommodation. It also includes a chapter about pilgrimage: both religious and judicial pilgrimages. A book for Middle Ages lovers but not only.

Book A Guide to Italian Language and Culture for English Speaking Learners of Italian

Download or read book A Guide to Italian Language and Culture for English Speaking Learners of Italian written by Barbara Gabriella Renzi and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2019-02-01 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Italian textbook is divided into two parts. The first consists of texts and dialogues, which help the reader to have fun while learning Italian. This section is also peppered with grammar lessons. The second part uses a number of photos, which encourage students to speak about what they see. Its topics are culturally interesting, and include cities to visit, recipes and small biographies of famous Italian poets and writers. As such, the book is suitable for students who are at beginner and post-beginner levels; in other words, A1, A2, B1, and B2. Students of the latter level can use the first two parts of the book to revise what they have studied in the past and the third part to improve their vocabulary and their reading skills. One of the strengths of this book is in its recordings, which used several people with a range of different accents. Such variety of accents and voices represents a good training tool for the student of Italian. The book also includes contributions from Michela Dettori, Michela Esposito, Elsa Musacchio, Davide Renzi, Lea De Negri, Denise Pellini, Maria Andreana Deiana, Lia Renzi, Clara Lucci and Flavia Rovella, which serve to make it unique and interesting.

Book Global Perspectives in Modern Italian Culture

Download or read book Global Perspectives in Modern Italian Culture written by Guido Abbattista and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-09-22 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Global Perspectives in Modern Italian Culture presents a series of unexplored case studies from the sixteenth to the twentieth century, each demonstrating how travellers, scientists, Catholic missionaries, scholars and diplomats coming from the Italian peninsula contributed to understandings of various global issues during the age of early globalization. It also examines how these individuals represented different parts of the world to an Italian audience, and how deeply Italian culture drew inspiration from the increasing knowledge of world ‘Otherness’. The first part of the book focuses on the production of knowledge, drawing on texts written by philosophers, scientists, historians and numerous other first-hand eyewitnesses. The second part analyses the dissemination and popularization of knowledge by focussing on previously understudied published works and initiatives aimed at learned Italian readers and the general public. Written in a lively and engaging manner, this book will appeal to scholars and students of early modern and modern European history, as well as those interested in global history.

Book World s Fairs Italian Style

    Book Details:
  • Author : Cristina Della Coletta
  • Publisher : University of Toronto Press
  • Release : 2006-12-15
  • ISBN : 1442658096
  • Pages : 362 pages

Download or read book World s Fairs Italian Style written by Cristina Della Coletta and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2006-12-15 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: According to conventional wisdom, Italy was not an influential participant in the nationalistic and imperialistic discourses that world's fairs produced in countries such as Great Britain, France, and the United States. In the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, however, Italy hosted numerous national and international exhibitions expounding notions of national identity, imperial expansion, technological progress, and capitalist growth. World's Fairs Italian-Style explores world's fairs in Italy at the turn of the twentieth century in comparison to their more famous counterparts in France, England, and the United States. Cristina Della Coletta demonstrates that, because of its social fragmentation and hybrid history, Italy was a site of both hegemony and subordination – an aspiring imperial power whose colonization started from within. She focuses on two best-selling authors, Emilio Salgari and Guido Gozzano, and illustrates how these authors interpreted their age's 'exposition mentality.' Salgari and Gozzano's exposition narratives, Della Coletta argues, reveal Italy's uncertainties about own sense of national identity, and its belated commitment to Western imperialism. Of interest to students and scholars of literature, cultural history, and Italian, World's Fairs Italian-Style provides a fascinating glimpse into a hitherto unexplored area of study, and brings to light a cultural phenomenon that played a significant role in shaping Italy's national identity.

Book The Holy Portolano Le Portulan sacr

Download or read book The Holy Portolano Le Portulan sacr written by Michele Bacci and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2014-12-11 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
