Book excerpt: La mirada de Aquiles es un libro que recoge, describe y analiza el gran acorde que representa la poética de Robert Lowell en la coyuntura de la literatura norteamericana contemporánea. Así concentramos nuestra mirada sobre la secuencia poética de Life Studies (1959), que interpretamos como epicentro irradiador del sistema imaginario de este poeta. Una secuencia que también supuso un punto de inflexión en la vida pública desde una yoidad que impulsó su universo íntimo y profundamente elegíaco hacia el exterior. Desde aquí se procede a profundizar en For the Union Dead (1964), para reflexionar sobre lo que denominamos como conflictividad axiológica estructural inherente al sistema imaginario de Lowell. Desde esta perspectiva se parte de la edición norteamericana que incluye ambas secuencias poéticas y que contiene la importante sección en prosa titulada '91 Revere Street'. La profundización en estas dos secuencias líricas implica la revisión previa de un mapa de relecturas que afecta no sólo a la obra anterior de Lowell sino a toda la modulación de su sistema imaginario desde su temprana etapa creativa. Es un camino hacia y desde el mito buscando llenar el vacío de las crisis religiosas tanto del propio Lowell como del pensamiento occidental, tal como indica George Steiner. El poeta accede a Aquiles como referente. Así, desde la asimilación del mito construye su cosmovisión a partir de la palabra poética.

Social History of Punitive Institutions in Spain needs meetings and discussions, comparison and collaboration between researchers. Only then it will become visible and intelligible as a historiographical trend and, above all, as a theoretical-methodological hope, because in fact, now it is more than conceivable as a historiographical practice. Here in this book are outlined, along with the achievements, the shortcomings and the most pressing challenges. Far from seeking an extemporaneous autonomy, Social History of Punitive Institutions wants to try to find its own feasibility based on intersections and good mixings. Those objectives were considered by the Study Group about History of Prison and Punitive Institutions (Grupo de Estudio sobre la Historia de la Prisión y las Instituciones Punitivas, GEHPIP) –an interuniversity team and with central office at Universidad de Castilla-La Mancha (UCLM)– when organising what it decided to name in an homonymous way 1st International Congress on History of Prison and Punitive Institutions (I Congreso Internacional sobre Historia de la Prisión y las Instituciones Punitivas), held in Ciudad Real (Spain) from 10 to 12 April 2013. The electronic book here presented is a good example of what it was told and discussed there.

Vallejo lived and wrote in two distinct settings—Peru and Paris—which were continually crisscrossed by new developments in aesthetics, politics, and practices of everyday life; his poetry and prose therefore need to be read in connection with modernity in all its forms and spaces. Book excerpt: The book examines the links between literature and film in Latin America by using queer theory and a series of recent cultural productions whose arguments destabilize traditional gender roles and heteronormative masculinity. For many years, the connections between a literary text and its film adaptation have been considered only from the point of view of the latter’s fidelity to the written work, which many scholars imagined to be the original that filmmakers needed to respect. Within the last two decades, however, the idea of adaptation fidelity has been challenged by a number of critics who refute the existence of an original text and promote the notion of an ambiguous and complex relationship between a literary work and its film adaptation. Based on such developments and with the help of queer theory, this book questions and revises several crucial theoretical approximations that analyze the relations between the two art forms in an attempt to overcome the limitations of fidelity discourse. This is the first book-length study that seeks to examine, with the appropriate detail, the connections between film and literature in Latin America through the lenses of queer theory and by focusing on the representations of numerous practices that do not fit within the general framework of heteronormative sexuality.
