  • ISBN : 0768017122
  • Pages : 218 pages

Download or read book Lost Fighters written by William Holder and published by SAE International. This book was released on 2006-12-06 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, by Bill Holder, discusses the "Lost Fighter" turbojet and turboprop propulsion systems of the exciting jet fighter era in the United States since the mid-1940s. Until now, very little has been published about these fascinating fighter activities that, for a variety of reasons, did not reach fruition. Covering fighters that did not reach beyond an artist's concept stage, to those that were cancelled after an evaluation of flight capabilities, to others that were cast aside after losing a fly-off competition, this book makes use of previously unpublished, primary-source material. It provides a coherent picture of U.S. jet fighter development and evolution. This book also includes hundreds of photos, drawings, and illustrations of the many "Lost Fighters."

Book The Curtiss X Planes

Download or read book The Curtiss X Planes written by Francis H. Dean and published by Schiffer Publishing. This book was released on 2001 with total page 175 pages. The author, an insider who headed preliminary design work, gives a brief history of Curtiss Wright, and of the Curtiss Propeller Division that spawned the program, then follows with the development details of the X-100 concept demonstrator and the follow-on X-19 military aircraft. Photos and detailed design descriptions are provided, as well as test flights and test pilot's reports, and finally, never before seen advanced military and civil VTOL aircraft concepts studies.

Book The Performance of a Conceptual Vertical Attitude Takeoff and Landing Fighter Aircraft

Download or read book The Performance of a Conceptual Vertical Attitude Takeoff and Landing Fighter Aircraft written by Basil S Papadales (Jr) and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 31 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The performance of a conceptual 18,000-lb (8200-kg) vertical attitude takeoff and landing fighter aircraft is presented. The single-seat aircraft is designed around a single F100 turbofan. Contemporary avionics and materials technologies are assumed. The design payload includes an M61 cannon with ammunition and four Dogfight missiles. No compromises for mission capabilities, other than air combat, exist in the design. The fighter has a combat radius of 308 nm (570 km) with a maximum level speed in excess of Mach 2 at altitude. Range, turning, and specific excess energy performance are presented. Weight and range performance penalties for the inclusion of conventional landing gear, a rotating cockpit, and a multi-engine design are summarized. (Author).

This book was released on 2021-11-01 with total page 495 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past eight decades, developments in vertical lift aircraft--both helicopters and vertical/short takeoff and landing (V/STOL) planes--have given the American military unparalleled capabilities on the modern battlefield. The U.S. has led the world in vertical lift technologies with the help of some of the brightest minds in this field--Igor I. Sikorsky, Arthur M. Young, Frank N. Piasecki, Charles H. Kaman and Stanley Hiller, Jr., to name a few--and by having the industrial prowess to make their concepts reality. This book provides a concise historical survey, including technical specifications, drawings, and photographs of every type of helicopter and V/STOL aircraft developed for the U.S. military, from the earliest examples tested in 1941 and 1942, up to the newest prototypes.

Book Sea Basing

    Book Details:
  • Author : National Research Council
  • Publisher : National Academies Press
  • Release : 2005-08-14
  • ISBN : 0309095174
  • Pages : 104 pages

Download or read book Sea Basing written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2005-08-14 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The availability of land bases from which to launch and maintain military, diplomatic, and humanitarian relief operations is becoming increasingly uncertain because of physical or political constraints. The ability to operate from a sea base, therefore, is likely to become more and more important. The Defense Science Board recently concluded that Sea Basing will be a critical future joint military capability and that DOD should proceed to develop such capability. Following the DSB report, the Navy requested that the National Research Council (NRC) convene a workshop to assess the science and technology base, both inside and outside the Navy, for developing Sea Basing and to identify R&D for supporting future concepts. This report of the workshop includes an examination of Sea Basing operational concepts; ship and aircraft technology available to make Sea Basing work; and issues involved in creating the sea base as a joint system of systems.

Book VERTICAL LANDING AND TAKEOFF AIRCRAFT

Download or read book VERTICAL LANDING AND TAKEOFF AIRCRAFT written by Viktor Fedorovich Pavlenko and published by . This book was released on 1969 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is devoted to new types of flying craft--vertical takeoff and landing aircraft VTOL. These aircraft make it possible to obviate the need for awkward and vulerable airfields and can carry out rapid and sweeping flight maneuvers. They also mean that hauling of passengers and cargo in local airlines can be done with greater efficiency and more economically. (Author).
