Zur Vorlesung gehört ein umfangreicher Exkurs, in dem Husserl durch eine phänomenologische Analyse des Unterschieds zwischen Sach- und Normbegriffen den wissenschaftstheoretischen Charakter der Ethik als normativer Geisteswissenschaft bestimmt.

Book excerpt: The work of German cultural theorist and art historian Aby Warburg (1866–1929) has had a lasting effect on how we think about images. This book is the first in English to focus on his last project, the encyclopedic Atlas of Images: Mnemosyne. Begun in earnest in 1927, and left unfinished at the time of Warburg’s death in 1929, the Atlas consisted of sixty-three large wooden panels covered with black cloth. On these panels Warburg carefully, intuitively arranged some thousand black-and-white photographs of classical and Renaissance art objects, as well as of astrological and astronomical images ranging from ancient Babylon to Weimar Germany. Here and there, he also included maps, manuscript pages, and contemporary images taken from newspapers. Trying through these constellations of images to make visible the many polarities that fueled antiquity’s afterlife, Warburg envisioned the Atlas as a vital form of metaphoric thought. While the nondiscursive, frequently digressive character of the Atlas complicates any linear narrative of its themes and contents, Christopher D. Johnson traces several thematic sequences in the panels. By drawing on Warburg’s published and unpublished writings and by attending to Warburg’s cardinal idea that "pathos formulas" structure the West’s cultural memory, Johnson maps numerous tensions between word and image in the Atlas. In addition to examining the work itself, he considers the literary, philosophical, and intellectual-historical implications of the Atlas. As Johnson demonstrates, the Atlas is not simply the culmination of Warburg’s lifelong study of Renaissance culture but the ultimate expression of his now literal, now metaphoric search for syncretic solutions to the urgent problems posed by the history of art and culture.

Like William James or Gilles Deleuze, Souriau methodically defends the thesis of an existential pluralism. There are indeed different manners of existing and even different degrees or intensities of existence: from pure phenomena to objectivized things, by way of the virtual and the “super-existent,” to which works of art and the intellect, and even morality, bear witness. Existence is polyphonic, and, as a result, the world is considerably enriched and enlarged. Beyond all that exists in the ordinary sense of the term, it is necessary to allow for all sorts of virtual and ephemeral states, transitional realms, and barely begun realities, still in the making, all of which constitute so many “inter-worlds.”

All das und noch vieles andere führte zur Formulierung der folgenden Hauptaufgaben: Schaffung eines deutlichen Bewußtseins dafür, welche vergangenen und gegenwärtigen Forschungsaktivitäten trotz unterschiedlicher Ausgangspunkte und Zielsetzungen und trotz der äußerlichen Zugehörigkeit zu anderen Disziplinen als Beiträge zur Fachsprachenforschung aufzufassen sind. Vermittlung der Einsicht in die Notwendigkeit, daß die Fachsprachenforschung eine weitestgehend konsensfähige Theorie der Fachsprachen erarbeiten muß, aus der Methoden und Forschungsprogramme abgeleitet werden können. Repräsentative Darstellung des Forschungsgegenstandes ohne Anspruch auf Vollständigkeit, aber mit dem Ziel, theoretische Fragestellungen, Problemfelder und empirische Befunde so auszuwählen, daß vorsichtige Schlüsse vom dargestellten Teil auf das Ganze gezogen werden können. Verklammerung der Fachsprachenforschung und der Terminologiewissenschaft, auch mit Blick auf (inter-) kulturelle Spezifika. Bemühen, die einzelphilologischen Grenzen zu überschreiten. Kritische Einschätzung von Hypothesen, Methoden und ihrer Anwendung sowie der bisherigen Ergebnisse. Konzeptionelle und darstellerische Verbindung diachroner und synchroner Aspekte. Anregung, Konzeption und Perspektivierung künftiger Forschung. By demonstrating how each of these works calls for an affirmative engagement with literature, Flore Chevaillier explores a centrally important issue in the criticism of contemporary fiction. Critics have claimed that experimental literature, in its disruption of conventional story-telling and language uses, resists literary and social customs. While this account is accurate, it stresses what experimental texts respond to more than what they offer. This book proposes a counter-view to this emphasis on the strictly privative character of innovative fictions by examining experimental works' positive ideas and affects, as well as readers' engagement in the formal pleasure of experimentations with image, print, sound, page, orthography, and syntax. Elaborating an erotics of recent innovative literature implies that we engage in the formal pleasure of its experimentations with signifying techniques and with the materiality of their medium. Such engagement provokes a fusion of the reader's senses and the textual material, which invites a redefinition of corporeality as a kind of textual practice.

Book excerpt: The book traces the political history of the concept of social policy. „Social policy“ originated in Germany in the mid 19th century as a scholarly term that made a career in politics. The term became more prominent only after World War II. Kaufmann, the doyen of the sociology of social policy in Germany, argues that „social policy“ responds to the modern disjunction between “state” and “society” diagnosed by the German philosopher Hegel. Hegel’s disciple Lorenz von Stein saw social policy as a means to pacify the capitalist class conflict. After World War II, social policy expanded in an unprecedented way, changing its character in the process. Social policy turned from class politics into a policy for the whole population, with new concepts – like "social security", "redistribution" and "quality of life" - and new overarching formulas, "social market economy" and "social state" (the German version of “welfare state”). Both formulas have remained indeterminate and contested, indicating the inherent openness of the idea of the “social”.
