Book Towards a New Anthropology of the Embodied Mind Maine de Biran s Physio Spiritualism from 1800 to the 21st Century

Download or read book Towards a New Anthropology of the Embodied Mind Maine de Biran s Physio Spiritualism from 1800 to the 21st Century written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2023-11-13 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This exploration in the history of ideas examines the groundbreaking notion of the embodied mind in its analysis by the French philosopher and politician Maine de Biran (1766–1824) and in its afterlife: consciousness is generated through frequent interaction between the voluntary and the spiritual. The conscious, active self is constituted in its sovereign autonomy, as free and undivided, by an inner act of willful resistance, a physical effort towards its own body and the world. For the first time, a multidisciplinary group of senior and junior researchers from Japan, USA and Europe investigate origins and discursive cross-fertilization of this concept around 1800, an intermediary stage between 1870 and 1945, and its influence upon existentialism, phenomenology, and deconstructivism during the postwar-period and beyond, from 1943 to 2010.

Book excerpt: The deportees into Nazi extermination camps charge the Shoa as the unutterable experience of the twentieth century that remains unsurpassed. They serve as witnesses of an event that, more than any other event, cannot be explained or rationalized. With this book, the author ponders upon this subject, addressing in particular those who were born in the world "after Auschwitz." The author, through his analysis of the spatial-temporal, symbolic and physical structure of the lager pieces together the specific pedagogy of annihilation, which was an original Nazi creation. He introduces the lager as a pedagogical device that, in addition to destroying individuals, placed them in a condition of self-destruction. Searching for traces of that expropriation and liquidation device within modern societies, the author finds opportunities of resistance and opposition by individual subjects."

Book Understanding Cultural Traits

Download or read book Understanding Cultural Traits written by Fabrizio Panebianco and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-02-26 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume constitutes a first step towards an ever-deferred interdisciplinary dialogue on cultural traits. It offers a way to enter a representative sample of the intellectual diversity that surrounds this topic, and a means to stimulate innovative avenues of research. It stimulates critical thinking and awareness in the disciplines that need to conceptualize and study culture, cultural traits, and cultural diversity. Culture is often defined and studied with an emphasis on cultural features. For UNESCO, “culture should be regarded as the set of distinctive spiritual, material, intellectual and emotional features of society or a social group”. But the very possibility of assuming the existence of cultural traits is not granted, and any serious evaluation of the notion of “cultural trait” requires the interrogation of several disciplines from cultural anthropology to linguistics, from psychology to sociology to musicology, and all areas of knowledge on culture. This book presents a strong multidisciplinary perspective that can help clarify the problems about cultural traits.

Book Practicing Critical Pedagogy

Download or read book Practicing Critical Pedagogy written by Mary Frances Agnello and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-12-22 with total page 151 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited text recaptures many of Joe L. Kincheloe’s national and international influences. An advocate and a scholar in the social, historical, and philosophical foundations of education, he dedicated his professional life to his vision of critical pedagogy. The authors in this volume found mentorship, as well as kinship, in Joe and express the many ways in which he and his work made profound differences in their work and lives. Joe’s research always pushed the limits of what critically reflective and informed teaching entailed, never diluting the import of comprehending the complexity of sociopolitical, cultural, economic, and educational discourses and practices. Dedicated to a praxis of social and political activism rooted in students’ development as citizens and workers, the labor of teachers as action researchers, cultural workers, and social mediators is always at the heart of all he achieved. We who were so influenced directly and indirectly by him knew his genius and relished the generosity with which he shared his ideas, advice, encouragement, and art. The world is better because of Joe L. Kincheloe scholarship—inextricably related to “critical” critical thinking and enactment of education that tenaciously interrupts complacency, mediocrity, always responding thoughtfully to particular educational contexts.
