Book Marjorie s New Friend

Download or read book Marjorie s New Friend written by Carolyn Wells and published by Lindhardt og Ringhof. This book was released on 2021-11-11 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The third book in Carolyn Wells ‘Marjorie Maynard’ series continues from where the last book left off, and we join Marjorie and her family for a wonderful Christmas. There is danger to contend with too though, and Marjorie finds herself quarantining away from her family due to the increasing risk of diphtheria. Miss Hart, an inventive and cheery governess, is quarantining alongside Marjorie and manages to make this enforced isolation much more fun, as they come up with new games and still manage to get themselves into mischief. Carolyn Wells (1862-1942) was a prolific American novelist and poet, best known for her children’s literature, mystery novels and humorous verse. Following school in New Jersey, Wells worked as a librarian, where she developed her love of reading. It was during 1896 that Wells' first book ‘At the Sign of the Sphinx’ was published. From 1900 she dedicated herself to her literary career, writing over 170 novels in total across a range of genres. Some of her most loved works include the ‘Patty Fairfield’ and ‘Marjorie Maynard’ series for girls, as well as the ‘Fleming Stone’ mystery series for adults. Wells is also well-known for her humorous nonsense verse, and was a frequent contributor of verse to magazines. She published an autobiography ‘The Rest of my Life’ in 1937. Wells died in New York City in 1942.

Book Sensing God

    Book Details:
  • Author : Roger Ferlo
  • Publisher : Cowley Publications
  • Release : 2001-11-01
  • ISBN : 1461624126
  • Pages : 144 pages

Download or read book Sensing God written by Roger Ferlo and published by Cowley Publications. This book was released on 2001-11-01 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Think of all the senses you use when you pick up a Bible. What do you see? What do you smell? What do you touch? Reading scripture attentively is more than a matter of sight. Most of us have been taught to think about God in visual terms, yet the very subject matter of scripture—our relationship with the fullness of God—makes irresistible demands upon all of our senses if we are to begin to understand anything about God. In these meditations on stories from the New Testament, Roger Ferlo shows us how to read the Bible in a “full-bodied” way, with all the senses attuned. For just as a printed recipe cannot substitute for a mouth-watering feast, so the Bible must be brought to life through the senses. Its stories must be seen, heard, touched, smelled, and tasted. Only then, Ferlo believes, can we truly begin to encounter in our lives the Word of God to us in scripture. Sensing God is one of our series of Cowley Cloister Books: smaller format, gift edition books designed for meditative and devotional reading.

Book Companions in Christ

    Book Details:
  • Author : Marjorie J. Thompson
  • Publisher : Companions in Christ
  • Release : 2002
  • ISBN : 9780835809801
  • Pages : 126 pages

Download or read book Companions in Christ written by Marjorie J. Thompson and published by Companions in Christ. This book was released on 2002 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It takes a lot of willingness and practice to see life from God's perspective. Perhaps nothing goes more against the grain of human nature than the ideas of forgiving those who wound us and accepting forgiveness from others. The second release in the Companions in Christ Series, The Way of Forgiveness explores how to deal with these issues to preserve "the beauty of our souls" and to fulfill the teachings of Jesus in the Sermon on the Mount. In this 8-week study, Thompson breaks down the transformational process by first examining shame, guilt, and anger. A full release of these feelings not only leads to the wholeness that Christ taught but also takes us on a path of freedom and joy. A unique feature of this book is the inclusion of a reproduction of Rembrandt's Return of the Prodigal Son. Over the course of the study, the artwork will serve as a focal point for reflection and discovery. A Leader's Guide for The Way of Forgiveness is available.

Book Poems by Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings

Download or read book Poems by Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings written by Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A fascinating tapestry woven from the lives of women who had won the right to vote a mere six years earlier. In Songs of a Housewife, we hear the voice of an emerging feminist, a voice that stubbornly and--given the political climate of the 1920s--courageously insists that women be respected. Fans of Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings will be surprised and ultimately delighted by this long overdue collection."--Connie May Fowler, author of Sugar Cage and Before Women Had Wings "Makes available for the first time [the] early work of Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings. . . . Reveals themes, attitudes, phrases, habits of speech . . . and a predilection for irony that characterizes [her] later work."--Peggy W. Prenshaw, Louisiana State University "Rawlings's poetry is surprisingly good. . . . solid, traditional poetry about subjects that will never go out of fashion."--Joel Myerson, University of South Carolina More than a decade before writing The Yearling and Cross Creek, Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings was a young housewife-journalist living in Rochester, New York. In 1926, the Rochester Times-Union did a trial run of her column-in-verse, Songs of a Housewife. To the editor's surprise, the column proved immensely popular; over the next two years, Rawlings published a poem a day, six days a week, and gained a wide syndication. When she moved to Florida in 1928, however, the poems were forgotten and--until this collection of roughly half of them--never reprinted. In the 250 poems collected here, Rawlings presents homespun advice on such subjects as the trials and tribulations of being a cook, mother, friend, relative, and neighbor. She dedicates many to her favorite subjects: gardening, cooking, pets, and nature. Throughout, her goal is to entertain, to educate, and to give a voice to the housewife who sees her role as a creative and important one. In the process, of course, she also invariably reveals a great deal about herself, and devoted readers will be curious to see how the Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings they know and love is evident here, in these early and spirited poems. Because little is known about Rawlings's life during this period, Songs of a Housewife is valuable as commentary on her evolving attitudes as a woman and as a writer, and many of the same themes appear in her later works. As a reflection of the life of a middle-class woman struggling to carve out an independent and fulfilling role for herself, these poems also offer a rare insight into the life of women in the late 1920s. Rodger L. Tarr is University Distinguished Professor of English at Illinois State University. His most recent publications are Short Stories of Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings (UPF, 1994) and Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings: A Descriptive Bibliography (1996).

Book Mulled Psalms

    Book Details:
  • Author : Marjorie Gray
  • Publisher : Wipf and Stock Publishers
  • Release : 2014-12-17
  • ISBN : 1498204392
  • Pages : 165 pages

Download or read book Mulled Psalms written by Marjorie Gray and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2014-12-17 with total page 165 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mulled Psalms is a book of poetry. Using the metaphor of mulled cider or wine, it is a collection of carefully brewed, distilled, and spiced beverages. The basic ingredient in each of these 150 poems is the biblical psalm of the corresponding number. Thus, the length, subject, tone, and other aspects of a specific poem resemble that of the original psalm. Because each psalm was mulled individually, at varying times and temperatures of Spirit-fire, each comes alive as a new entity. Many are prayers. All address or relate to God, the ultimately unnamable one, whom all humans yearn to know and name. Capital letters are used for all nouns and pronouns, and for many other parts of speech, referring to God.
