Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A gathering of poems written over Landis’s teaching life, Verse Assignments reflects themes that include classroom quotidian routine, daily family, community, and faith experience, as well as response to requests about celebratory occasions and the achievements of colleagues. Landis finds much to respect in the deeds of love that surround us and how the meaning of life can be enhanced when it is expressed in the sound and rhythm of verse. From his study and teaching of poetry, Landis is often engaged by poetic forms and enjoys the discipline of stricter rhymes and meters in older forms. While Verse Assignments contains examples of these, Landis enjoys as well the freedom from restraint and the colloquial vocabulary and informal manner of ordinary speech. Landis comes to poetry writing with the pleasant experiences given him by the teachers of his lifetime. Memorizing poems began at an early age, and he has continued to enjoy the richness of poetic language from Chaucer and Milton and Shakespeare’s inimitable poems and plays to selections from present times.

Kennedy. Unlike many how to write poetry texts, Unlocking the Poem teaches by doing. Its assignments offer writers, new and experienced, the chance to try new things, to practice their craft--and to produce their own original, polished poems in the process. Unlocking the Poem offers 450 proven assignments--more than any other work available--based on poetic form, subject matter, the use of specific words or lines, time for writing, and so forth. The collection contains assignments to elicit autobiographical experience, moods, and the realms of fact and fantasy. These assignments provide stimuli to get the creative process underway, with subjects ranging from the everyday to the surreal, from people to the natural world, from the works of man to history to investigating language. Unlocking the Poem is organized so that related material comes together, readily findable. Assignments are adaptable to beginners and to advanced writers; there's plenty in here for every poet. Unlocking the Poem belongs in the library of every writing student who wants to be a poet, and every poet who wants to write more and better poems.

Download or read book Zen Sand written by Victor Sogen Hori and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 2003-02-28 with total page 785 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Zen Sand is a classic collection of verses aimed at aiding practitioners of kôan meditation to negotiate the difficult relationship between insight and language. As such it represents a major contribution to both Western Zen practice and English-language Zen scholarship. In Japan the traditional Rinzai Zen kôan curriculum includes the use of jakugo, or "capping phrases." Once a monk has successfully replied to a kôan, the Zen master orders the search for a classical verse to express the monk’s insight into the kôan. Special collections of these jakugo were compiled as handbooks to aid in that search. Until now, Zen students in the West, lacking this important resource, have been severely limited in carrying out this practice. Zen Sand combines and translates two standard jakugo handbooks and opens the way for incorporating this important tradition fully into Western Zen practice. For the scholar, Zen Sand provides a detailed description of the jakugo practice and its place in the overall kôan curriculum, as well as a brief history of the Zen phrase book. This volume also contributes to the understanding of East Asian culture in a broader sense.

Book Transmediating the Whedonverse s

Download or read book Transmediating the Whedonverse s written by Juliette C. Kitchens and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-10-29 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the transmedial nature of the storyworlds created by and/or affiliated with television auteur, writer, and filmmaker, Joss Whedon. As such, the book addresses the ways in which Whedon’s storyworlds, or ‘verses, employ transmedia, both intrinsically as texts and extrinsically as these texts are consumed and, in some cases, reworked, by audiences. This collection walks readers through fan and scholar-fan engagement, intrinsic textual transmediality, and Whedon’s lasting influence on televisual and transmedia texts. In closing, the editors argue for the need to continue research into how the Whedonverse(s) lend themselves to transmedial study, engage audiences in ways that take advantage of multiple media, and encourage textual internalization of these engagements within audiences.

Book How the Metaverse Will Reshape Business and Sustainability

Download or read book How the Metaverse Will Reshape Business and Sustainability written by Rim El Khoury and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-09-16 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sustainability is part of every aspect of our life, with climate concerns shaping the future. Thus, it is important to understand how metaverse will affect sustainability, as it is opening both challenges and opportunities for environmental sustainability. On the one side, replacing real-world interactions with 3D virtual and exchanging physical goods with digital ones are significantly less resource-intensive and more carbon-efficient. Therefore, this holds the promise of reducing the environmental pollution. On the other side, metaverse increases e-waste and energy consumption. Given this controversial impact, it is crucial for businesses and researchers to understand how to ensure that the metaverse develops sustainably. This book is popping out several questions: Do businesses understand the metaverse concept and perceive the benefits and advantages of implementing such technologies? How will the metaverse change business? Will metaverse change our working place and skills needed? How can companies get ahead of the change and mold it to their advantage? Will businesses use metaverse? Can metaverse create a more sustainable word? How can we make the metaverse better than what we have now? Is it going to affect environmental sustainability? Will it cause more severe climate problems, or would it be the solution? How can metaverse impact the achievements of SDGs?
