Sich im öffentlichen Raum zu bewegen, heißt für ihn, begründet Position zu beziehen, reflektiert Gestaltungsspielräume auszunutzen und persönliche Verantwortung zu übernehmen. Davon ist sowohl seine akademische als auch seine hochschulpolitische Karriere sowie seine Tätigkeit in der Wirtschaft geprägt. Allen Bestrebungen gemeinsam ist die Suche nach Neuem und die Frage, wie es entsteht? Handlungsleitend für Walther Ch. Zimmerli war und ist aber stets, ob und wie diese Innovationen eine Verbesserung für die Menschen in Gegenwart und Zukunft darstellen.
