Book excerpt: A comprehensive monograph on one of the world's most influential and recognizable postwar designers The uncompromising bad boy of postwar Danish design, Verner Panton created enduring icons of pop culture, beloved the world over. He broke with the Scandinavian tradition of handcrafted teak-wood furniture to pioneer the use of plastic, fibreglass, synthetic fabrics, and industrial mass production, and this thoroughly researched and exhaustively illustrated book examines Panton's ground-breaking approach to environments, systems, patterns and color. Panton's oeuvre is a truly pioneering achievement, the wide-ranging influence of which is still felt today. Containing a wealth of images, including hand-drawn sketches by Panton, personal photographs, and advertisements from the official Panton archive, this monograph documents the astonishing breadth of Panton's work, from candlesticks and clocks to the seminal S Chair and Living Tower, to total floor-to-ceiling interiors, encompassing textiles, lighting, and furniture. This book is organized thematically with Panton's unique approach to environments, systems, and vividly illustrated patterns, and features a comprehensive, illustrated chronology of Panton's works, including many unrealized projects.

Book Architectural Resistance

Download or read book Architectural Resistance written by Peter Noever and published by Hatje Cantz. This book was released on 2003 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Twenty architects explored possible developments for the lot neighboring the Schindler House, a revolutionary architectural landmark located in West Hollywood, California. Their visionary ideas are combined in this book to uniquely demonstrate contemporary avant-garde architecture in an unusual line-up. Responding to the challenge that 'It is the architect's duty to offer resistance', [this book] explores the field of tension surrounding architecture, urbanism, and preservation today. It poses the following questions: Is a landmark such as the Schindler House singular, or is it tied to a complex network of relations and urban situations? Is context important to a landmark's intrinsic meaning? How do we measure the social significance of unparalleled historic works of architecture? To what degree do landmarks rely on their surrounding conditions?"--Back cover.

Book The Vitra Schaudepot

Download or read book The Vitra Schaudepot written by Mateo Kries and published by Vitra Design. This book was released on 2017 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Vitra Design Museum Collection is one of the most important design collections in the world. It totals around 20,000 items, including 7,000 pieces of furniture, over 1,000 lighting objects and archives and estates from designers such as Charles and Ray Eames, Verner Panton and Alexander Girard. In summer 2016, the museum opened a building by architects Herzog & de Meuron to permanently present this collection: the Vitra Schaudepot. The centerpiece of the Schaudepot is a permanent exhibition of more than 400 key objects of modern furniture design from 1800 to the present. This presentation is complemented by smaller temporary exhibitions on themes related to the collection, a material library and an extensive digital catalogue. The Schaudepot constitutes the largest permanent exhibition on modern furniture design and at the same time a 'transparent design museum', making visible the work of the museum in all its facets. The publication sheds light on different aspects of the Schaudepot. The iconic building is illustrated in largescale photographs and drawings. The presentation of the collection in the interior is likewise shown using insightful imagery, augmented by a chronological overview of the exhibited objects. Short essays embed the objects within the context of design history and bring to light the curatorial decision-making behind the presented objects. The book is an attractive field guide through the history of furniture design and act as a portal to understand the Vitra Design Museum's unique collection - at the same time being the publication on one of the latest buildings by star architects Herzog & de Meuron.

Book excerpt: A richly illustrated presentation of Danish lamp design and the iconic designers who created them Lamp design is a field that continues to attract great attention, from both designers and design aficionados. Many books have come out on iconic Danish design, but this is the first to focus exclusively on Danish lamps. With Poul Henningsen's iconic PH-lamp as its point of departure, the book tells the stories behind 100 Danish lamp designs through text and images. The book introduces the reader to the inventions that enabled the first revolutionizing light sources: from the development of oil and gas lamps to the culmination in the late 19th century with the advent of incandescent light bulbs and Scandinavian functionalism. While architects and lamp designers enjoy the new possibilities afforded by the increasingly versatile LED light sources, the current retro wave has led to renewed interest in early electrical lamps. Vintage lamps fetch high prices, older models are relaunched and a large audience is interested in the history of the lamps. Lighting is a key element in 'hygge' - a warm, cosy ambience - and although Henningsen was a functionalist to the core, he had no intention of doing away with hygge. Hygge is a hot topic today, both in Denmark and abroad. Danish lamp design is not only about form. Although hard-core functionalists called for form to follow function, and function alone, real-life factors required them to compromise, and this compromise came to define Danish lamp design: hygge is a crucial quality that has to be included in the design. Thus, the purpose of the modern Danish lamp was - and is - not only to provide light but also to act as a decorative element and to spread a cosy ambience in Danish homes
