Book Photoperiodism in Plants

Download or read book Photoperiodism in Plants written by Brian Thomas and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1996-10-17 with total page 445 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Photoperiodism is the response to the length of the day that enables living organisms to adapt to seasonal changes in their environment as well as latitudinal variation. As such, it is one of the most significant andcomplex aspects of the interaction between plants and their environment and is a major factor controlling their growth and development. As the new and powerful technologies of molecular genetics are brought to bear on photoperiodism, it becomes particularly important to place new work in the context of the considerable amount of physiological information which already exists on the subject. This innovative book will be of interest to a wide range of plant scientists, from those interested in fundamental plant physiology and molecular biology to agronomists and crop physiologists. - Provides a self-sufficient account of all the important subjects and key literature references for photoperiodism - Includes research of the last twenty years since the publication of the First Edition - Includes details of molecular genetic techniques brought to bear on photoperiodism

Book Understanding Options for Agricultural Production

Download or read book Understanding Options for Agricultural Production written by G.Y. Tsuji and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-14 with total page 405 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first premise of this book is that farmers need access to options for improving their situation. In agricultural terms, these options might be manage ment alternatives or different crops to grow, that can stabilize or increase household income, that reduce soil degradation and dependence on off-farm inputs, or that exploit local market opportunities. Farmers need a facilitating environment, in which affordable credit is available if needed, in which policies are conducive to judicious management of natural resources, and in which costs and prices of production are stable. Another key ingredient of this facilitating environment is information: an understanding of which options are viable, how these operate at the farm level, and what their impact may be on the things that farmers perceive as being important. The second premise is that systems analysis and simulation have an impor tant role to play in fostering this understanding of options, traditional field experimentation being time-consuming and costly. This book summarizes the activities of the International Benchmark Sites Network for Agrotechnology Transfer (IBSNAT) project, an international initiative funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). IBSNAT was an attempt to demonstrate the effectiveness of understanding options through systems analysis and simulation for the ultimate benefit of farm households in the tropics and subtropics. The idea for the book was first suggested at one of the last IBSNAT group meetings held at the University of Hawaii in 1993.

Book Plant Physiology And Metabolism

Download or read book Plant Physiology And Metabolism written by Dr. H M Patil and published by AG PUBLISHING HOUSE (AGPH Books). This book was released on 2022-12-16 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of the inner workings of plants, or their physiology, is known as plant physiology. It is a sub-discipline of botany. Breathing, hormone functions, photosynthesis, feeding, nastic motions, tropisms, parthenogenesis, phototropism, as well as circadian rhythms are some of the primary activities discussed. Environmental stress physiology, seed germination, stomatal function, and dormancy are also covered. Besides, the topic is strongly associated with the sciences like plant morphology, plant ecology, phytochemistry, genetics, biophysics, molecular biology and cell biology. Plant physiology focuses on examining every internal action of the plant. The major physical and chemical processes are explored in the topic. This includes events that occur on a wide range of temporal and spatial scales. In other words, the study examines molecular interactions like photosynthesis and also the internal transport of water, minerals, and nutrients. There are also large-scale processes, such as changing the seasons, the growth of plants, the regulation of reproduction, and hibernation. The physiology of plants is a vital field of study for farmers. How plants are grown is an art form. Agriculture is the bedrock upon which human civilization was built. Domesticated species farming creates food surpluses that allow city dwellers to have a better standard of living. Plant genetics, agronomy, and also the use of the agrochemicals like fertilisers and pesticides are all part of today's agriculture.

This book was released on 2022-12-19 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book serves as a primer for those new to the study of plant physiology. In it, you'll find the fundamentals of understanding every process that takes place in a plant. The chapters in this book are separated into five sections. As an introductory chapter, we will discuss the physical and chemical characteristics of water, as well as the plant's ability to make use of its water potential via processes like transpiration, osmosis, diffusion, and absorption. Additionally, nitrogen and its relevance in plant nutrition are covered in chapter 2. The procedure of intake is also elaborated about. In the third chapter, titled "Photosynthesis," the process is described. The basics of photosynthesis, including the role of pigments in the process, as well as photophosphorylation, are discussed. In addition, the intricate workings of photosynthesis, the central activity in plants, are laid forth. The assimilation of carbon is discussed in depth in the next chapter. After this section, we go on to discuss the process of plant metabolism and the mechanisms involved. Furthermore, the several respiration types, the TCA cycle, and lipid metabolism are presented. Plant development is discussed in Chapter 5, along with related topics such as the stages of growth and the role of phytohormones (plant hormones). The material iv presented in this book is comprehensive and will aid students and researchers in their pursuit of knowledge.

Book excerpt: Plant Physiology: A Treatise, Volume VIA: Physiology of Development: Plants and Their Reproduction explores the various problems of development and reproduction that arise as plants, responsive to environmental stimuli, develop a vegetative plant body and produce seeds and fruits or organs of perennation. This book considers the morphological aspects of plant growth and development as well as the growth and reproduction of fungi, physiological aspects of vegetative reproduction and flowering, and perennation and dormancy. This volume is organized into four chapters and begins with an overview of growth and development, with reference to organization and patterns of development in vascular plants and the initiation and development of plants. The discussion then shifts to vegetative, sexual, and asexual reproduction in fungi, along with heterokaryosis and morphogenesis. The next chapter explores reproduction in plant biology, focusing on vegetative and sexual reproduction, sex determination, and photoperiodism. This book concludes by considering the physiological mechanisms underlying the production of organs of perennation and the establishment of dormancy. This text will be of value both to graduate students and to established investigators with specific interest in plant physiology.

The November edition also offers a detailed analysis of the cassava markets and the protracted decline in international coffee prices. An additional feature article analyses the recent conditions in the global markets for bananas and major tropical fruits, where world trade is foreseen to surge by 18 percent from last year. The outlook for global supplies of agricultural commodities in the 2018/19 marketing season remains broadly in line with earlier expectations. While the weather had some impact on crop prospects, the overall production at global level did not change significantly from the forecasts published in the July issue of Food Outlook. Beyond weather-induced revisions, the latest FAO revisions take into consideration the mounting uncertainties regarding trade policies, as well as the changes in exchange rates and rising energy prices.
