Book excerpt: This book contains a selection of reports contributed to the World Housing Encyclopedia project (http: //www.world-housing.net/) by the author, one of them together with Eng. Ilie Sandu. The reports were selected to highlight the difference in the building typology in Romania and Germany in vernacular and respectively Modernist housing. While in Romania brick masonry in rectangular one storey construction and reinforced concrete multistory frame were the typical structural systems, in Germany frame structure out of timber and respectively steel in multistory construction reflected the different geography of resources. Closing a report of the German colonists on the territory of today's Romania from about 300 years ago in Banat and in Sathmar county is included, in which the local vernacular typology of rectangular one storey brick masonry housing was practiced. The collection of reports is preceded by an essay deconstructing the term of Modernity in the dialogue traditional-modern in literature and architecture. Instead of postface conclusion are drawn on the common features and especially the differences in the two countries, relating the development also to late immigrants from Germany to Romania, as architect Rudolph Fraenkel was, who built one of the few buildings with steel structure to times of Modernism

Based on an extensive photographic archive, the book shows that individuals actively reproduced, circulated and negotiated the ideal citizen-image imposed by the Kemalist regime, reflecting not only state-imposed directives but also their class aspirations and other, wider social and cultural developments of the period, from Western fashion trends and movies to the increasing availability of modern consumer items. Calafato also reveals that the freedom from state control afforded by personal cameras allowed the desired image to be sometimes tweaked by incorporating elements from Ottoman and Turkic traditions, by pushing the boundaries of gender norms or by introducing playfulness. Making the Modern Turkish Citizen offers a valuable portrait of the ongoing political and social changes on the lives of the Turkish middle class, and of how they saw and wanted to present themselves, privately and publicly.

In order to account for the success of Nazarene missionaries, it also illuminates the strategies employed by Nazarenes in expanding and maintaining their communities which range from communalism, group mores and practices, internal economic organization of the Nazarene communities and their attitude towards economic change, and finally the appeal of the Nazarene faith and worship. Looking at the social, economic, cultural and historical motives of conversions to Nazarenes, it examines in depth the Nazarenes' challenge to the Serbian Orthodox Church and the latter's belated response in the form of the so-called re-Orthodoxization (in line with newly invented tradition of the Serbian version of Orthodox Christianity - Svetosavlje) and the development of the mass Bogomoljci movement with its implications for the development of the Serbian national self-identification observed in the changes of the notions of Church, religion and piety, which finally (during the interwar period) resulted in a discourse that combined and fused the nation and the Orthodox Church and closed the long-lasting gap between the Church and the Serbian people/nation.

The focus here is not so much on shared institutions but rather on such region-wide analogous institutional processes as the national awakening, the modernist opening, and the communist regimentation, the canonization of texts, and censorship of literature. These processes, which took place in all of the region’s cultures, were often asynchronous and subjected to different local conditions. The volume’s premise is that the national awakening and institutionalization of literature were symbiotically interrelated in East-Central Europe. Each national awakening involves a language renewal, an introduction of the vernacular and its literature in schools and universities, the creation of an infrastructure for the publication of books and journals, clashes with censorship, the founding of national academies, libraries, and theaters, a (re)construction of national folklore, and the writing of histories of the vernacular literature.
