Book A Bibliography of the Zygaenidae

Download or read book A Bibliography of the Zygaenidae written by Tremewan and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2023-11-27 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Zygaeninae (burnets) are diurnal, aposematic moths which occur in the Palaearctic, Oriental and Afrotropical regions. The unusual biology of this small subfamily of fewer than 120 species has inspired research on their ecology, chemical ecology, pheromone biology, ethology and mimicry, in addition to systematics, life history, larval host plants, genetics and geographical and individual variation. This bibliography of about 2750 entries has been checked against the original publications and is as complete as possible to the end of 1986. It is comprehensively indexed by subject and bibliography reference number.

Book Western Palaearctic Zygaenidae

Download or read book Western Palaearctic Zygaenidae written by Clas M. Naumann and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2023-07-03 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A complete handbook providing an extensive introduction to the biology, ecology and behaviour of the Zygaenidae. The introduction provides detailed information on zygaenid systematics and phylogeny, life cycles, morphology, zoogeography and palaeontology, genetics and individual variation, ecology and behaviour, conservation, collecting and breeding techniques. In the systematic part of the book, the 115 species of westen Palaearctic Zygaenidae, currently contained in the three subfamilies Procridinae, Chalcosiinae and Zygaeninae, are treated. Each species is briefly described, followed by differentiating characters of similar species, individual and geographical variation, distribution (with maps for each species), ecology, behaviour, early instars and larval foodplants. Colour plates illustrate all species and the male and female genitalia of the Procridinae are also figured. A bibliography provides references to the most relevant literature for those interested in current research.

Book A Systematic Catalogue of the Zygaenidae

Download or read book A Systematic Catalogue of the Zygaenidae written by Hoffmann and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2023-10-09 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work reflects modern concepts of systematics at the generic, specific and subspecific levels and aims to update the now outdated catalogue by Reiss & Tremewan (1967), and to bring stability into the nomenclature. The author, date and literature reference of each nominal taxon are cited, together with full synonymies. Type localities of taxa at species and subspecies levels are provided, as well as the range of each species and the distribution of each subspecies. Larval host-plants are listed under each zygaenid species (and vice-versa) and are also indexed by family and species. Literature references are annotated with the same key-words that were used in the Bibliography, to which the Catalogue is a companion and to which this work also contains an updating supplement. It concludes with an index of valid nominal taxa and their synoyms.

Book Iranian Entomology An Introduction

Download or read book Iranian Entomology An Introduction written by Cyrus Abivardi and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2001-07-03 with total page 618 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This major work presents the first comprehensive survey on entomological studies in Iran from prehistoric periods up to modern times. This concise collection and excerpts from the literature are complemented by over 130 color figures of superb quality showing insects and their habitats. Volume 1 Faunal Studies concentrates on the systematic taxonomy of Iranian insects. It also lists all members of Rhopalocera (butterflies) and four families of Heterocera (moths). An introductory chapter is reserved for basic information on the geography, vegetation and climate of Iran. Volume 2 Applied Entomology starts with a chapter on the history of entomology in Iran until current times. Several chapters cover agricultural aspects of entomology, such as destructive insects, biological control or cultivars exhibiting resistance to insect pests. Other chapters are on medical entomology, e.g. mosquito-, sandfly- or flea-borne diseases and human myiasis.

Book Alpine Biodiversity in Europe

Download or read book Alpine Biodiversity in Europe written by Laszlo Nagy and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The United Nations Conference on the Environment and Development (UNCED), held in Rio de Janeiro in 1992, spawned a multitude of pro grammes aimed at assessing, managing and conserving the earth's biological diversity. One important issue addressed at the conference was the mountain environment. A specific feature of high mountains is the so-called alpine zone, i. e. the treeless regions at the uppermost reaches. Though covering only a very small proportion of the land surface, the alpine zone contains a rela tively large number of plants, animals, fungi and microbes which are specifi cally adapted to cold environments. This zone contributes fundamentally to the planet's biodiversity and provides many resources for mountain dwelling as well as lowland people. However, rapid and largely man-made changes are affecting mountain ecosystems, such as soil erosion, losses of habitat and genetic diversity, and climate change, all of which have to be addressed. As stated in the European Community Biodiversity Strategy, "the global scale of biodiversity reduction or losses and the interdependence of different species and ecosystems across national borders demands concerted international action". Managing biodiversity in a rational and sustainable way needs basic knowledge on its qualitative and quantitative aspects at local, regional and global scales. This is particularly true for mountains, which are distributed throughout the world and are indeed hot spots of biodiversity in absolute terms as well as relative to the surrounding lowlands.

Download or read book Global Biodiversity written by T. Pullaiah and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2018-12-07 with total page 548 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first volume in the new multi-volume set, Global Biodiversity. Each volume in this series aims to provide insightful information on the biodiversity of selected nations in particular regions. The volumes summarize the available data on both wild and cultivated plants, wild and domesticated animals, and microbes of the different nations. Global Biodiversity, Volume 1: Selected Countries in Asia focuses on selected countries of Asia, providing an abundance of biodiversity information on Afghanistan, Bangladesh, India, Indonesia, Iran, Iraq, Japan, Lebanon, Malaysia, Mongolia, Myanmar, Nepal, and Vietnam. The first chapter in the volume provides an informative overview of what is biodiversity along with biogeographic classifications. It provides explanations of biodiversity patterns and species number; biodiversity conservation, protection, and international commitments and cooperation; biodiversity threats and drivers of change (such as human population growth, climate change, land use change); and the economics of biodiversity as well.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No International Congress of Entomology would now be complete without a symposium on insect life-cycles. The latest Congress, held at Vancouver, BC (Canada), in July 1988, was no exception, with a symposium on the genetics, evolution, and coordination of insect life cycles organized by Bill Bradshaw and Valerie Brown. The present volume arose from papers contributed by most of the speakers at the symposium, together with papers from other invited authors. In editing the book, I have been assisted greatly by the other authors, particularly Bill Bradshaw, Val Brown and Fritz Taylor. All contributors agreed to referee two other chapters, a system that worked efficiently and effectively: I thank all authors for performing this task in the face of other demands on their time. I would also like to thank Philip Corbet, John Greenslade, Bryan Clarke, and Gillian Thompson of Springer for their help.
